He was pretty damn strong, he had a long run as Heavyweight Champion, and not too many people ever beat him Armwrestling. One that did, they went back and forth a couple times, was Virgil Arciero. Virgil was big, but not like Dean, think Virgil went 6'5" and 325 lbs, with huge Popeye forearms. He is also my Godfathers cousin, Frank Arciero (deceased). He was one of the largest cement contractors in the world. RIP Back to Virgil, this guy used to curl 240 lbs with one hand. Gives you an idea just how strong Cleve Dean was, course he was a lot bigger, his hands made Virgil's look small.

I knew Cleve and his family. His brother was nearly as big as him. I even went to the same gym as Cleve in his later years. Even as an old man, whatever machine he got on he would use the whole stack. He was a good man

I was a top wrestling and football athlete in HS until a hip/back injury took me out. Completely changed my life for the next 6 years until I was finally able to get a surgeon that did a hip surgery and repair on me after years of misdiagnoses. When you're this big and fitness is such a huge part of your personality, I can't imagine what it did for Cleve. I know it made me feel worthless as a human when I couldn't do what I was naturally good and talented at any more. It was the thing I looked forward to doing every day and having that taken from me sometimes made me not want to see the next day. I'm thankful for modern medicine and the doctors (who actually know what they're doing) that were able to give me back my life and fitness. I can't imagine what it was like to fall from level as Cleve. So much talent and potential stolen from all of us, but most importantly Cleve.

I was privileged to meet and work with Mr. Dean while employed at the YMCA in Valdosta, GA. He was always cordial to those around him, myself included. I lost track of him, and often wondered where he was and how he was doing physically (his back issues were obvious, and I couldn't help but feel for him). It was truly an honor for me.

You know what's crazy? Cleve probably never lifted weights and competed in the world's strongest man competition. That's true, natural strength. Amazing man and I really wish he had better health and hadn't hurt his back. Not for competition purposes, just for his daily life and to be pain free.

I gripped up with him in 92 or 93. My first arm wrestling tournament. Organizers pulled me off the street lol! Everyone there where pros except me. And I barely beat the first two guys. Beat them with muscular endurance, but Dean???!!! He was absolutely massive. That didn't bother me at all. But when we locked up...its like I suddenly became a child. The massive size of his hands werent the problem , it was the ridiculousness of the power within them. I could feel he didnt give me all he had. Afterward I asked him to please do me a favor. I asked him to shake and squeeze my hand as hard as he could while pulling me in. Ill never forget that feeling. And I'm sure he didnt give 100% !

I really liked seeing him pat his opponent’s arm after pinning them. Such good sportsmanship. People these days could learn a lot from that simple gesture alone. Competing in the WSM competitions essentially untrained and with a significant back injury, and putting in a solid performance is incredibly impressive. I can’t imagine how strong he’d’ve been with coaching, training, and if he’d remained uninjured. What a legend. Thanks for sharing his life and times with us.

@@Papaspronator Wrong, also anyone who can score 3rd, 4th , 5th etc in any strongman event as he did is not just there for his size. He was there for his natural strength. It was his lack of weights training and no roids let him down

@ haha. He failed most of the events with the exception of a few. There were very weak fields overall, not even remotely close to what it is today. He had the same access to roids as all the other guys did and you have no idea if he took them or not, you are just purely speculating and you also don’t know if the other competitiors did. Most of them were actually just athletes from other random sports, like body building, football, track and field and there were a few weight lifters. He got crushed by most of them in a very weak field.

Cleve was voted the top puller of the 1970s and despite taking 6 years off in the 1980s, he was still the 4th best of that entire decade! Whatever tournament he entered, he was always considered the man to beat! If Cleve had done systematic resistance training along with the drugs, I think he would have defeated Levan, (currently, the best in the world) in arm wrestling if you could transport Levan back in time. Truly, a gentle giant.

WSM requires not only brute strength, but athleticism and technique as well. Just the fact that he was able to compete on the show is pretty impressive. It seems obvious that he wasn't trained to do certain events. There's no way he was gonna beat guys like Bill Kazmeier in any WSM event. But he was one hell of an arm wrestler.

Passed away at age 57 and a long way off from his peak in the 1970s. Yet I believe Todd Hutchins is 57 and at his peak now. Michael Todd and Jerry Cadorette are like 51 and 52 respectively and might be near their peaks as well. Cleve probably could have done far more in later years if it wasn't for that back injury.

A legend of the sport, Cleve was a classic horsepower guy on the table. As the sport progressed and names like John Brzenk, Todd Hutchings, Ron Bath, Richard Lupkees, Jonny Walker came through, technique became a huge advantage, hence why a 20 year old 200lb Brzenk could beat Cleve. He will always be remembered for being a gentle giant with his farming story folklore.

My arm wrestling coach got 3rd in USA once. Cleave came to our practice and went against our coach. Cleave asked how close do you want me to let you get and coach said one inch. Cleave let him, get one inch away and said go ahead and use 2 hands then pulled him over like he wasn’t even trying.

I worked the door and we once had a tussle with a guy that size. 8 bouncers at an average of 250 lbs could not resist him. Only when one jumped on the back and applied a chokehold he got stopped at long last. He just had played with us.with no bad intentions (we did not know that at that tussle. He told us later) His nickname was "Metzger" The Butcher and he was feared bigtime in our redlight district. ..

were you visiting feed stores in the late 1960s, early 1970s? Regulations have changed that limit the weight of such things. I'm currently living in Asia; here it's perfectly normal to get 50kg (110lb) bags of animal feed and fertilizer, back in the UK they are limited to 25kg (55lbs)

Instead of pondering how Cleve would have done without the back injury and with the drugs, I prefer to ponder how he would have done without the back injury against the other competitors if everyone had been drug-free as I believe Cleve was. That would be nice. Unfortunately PED use in rampant in every strength sport and there doesn't seem to be any real desire to crackdown on it's use by any of the main federations/organisations

@@StrengthUniverse You're right of course but I just think it's super-sad. Unless testing tech suddenly gets way ahead of doping tech they probably won't ever be able to make it possible for competitive strength athletes to have normal life-spans.

Dean was typical of many real world strong men that get their strength from labouring. They are incredibly strong and can work all day but it doesn't always translate to lifting weights.

Cool video. But multiple mentions of a back injury leading to weight gain is weird.... it's his eating habits not the injury.

Thank you. The back injury caused him to become far less capable of physical activity so he burned less calories. Yes it boil's down to him not controlling what he ate to compensate.

Cleave dean doesn’t compare to levan because of peds. Even if we consider him never having the injury I don’t think he was genetically an athlete either, but that’s hard to deduct from the injury and how that would effect your love and passion to train.
