I saw him do a seminar the day after some British event, and he bench pressed 450lb then - which considering he was depleted and cut to ribbons was impressive. I also encountered him a street in London 1982. I'd travelled down to see the 1982 Mr Olympia, and I was wearing a badge I'd made that had 'BERTIL FOX FOR POPE!' on it. He read it, laughed, and quizzed me about it. The dude was so wide he was like a CRT television on legs.

A back injury like that will destroy any leg strength vital in strongest man, but Andre the giant was the strongest man ever to live with hands as big and strong as a mountain gorilla, he overturned a big American car with 4 chads in it, but again hip/leg injuries crippled the 7 ft 560 lb French giant

I think it's ridiculous that there even is any "controversy" about Park using steroids. Park was a genetic freak. Searle released Nilevar in 1956 and Ciba released Dianabol in 1958. So nobody was using synthetic anabolic steroids before 1956; they didn't exist. Most likely, only the very highest-level US West Coast bodybuilders knew of them by 1958. Reg Park weighed 226 when he won Mr Britain in 1949, 214 when he won Mr Universe in 1951, 215 when he won it the second time in 1958, and 216 when he placed 3rd in 1971. If Park really had started using steroids when he learned of them, then they would have produced one pound of muscle on him in 11 years. And before anyone starts accusing Park of using testosterone, no one had access to testosterone before 1950 as it wasn't FDA-approved until then. Even then it was only made in small batches for research purposes. The only testosterone that anyone would have had access to was that mail-order stuff marketed as oral testosterone which was completely ineffective. John Ziegler, doctor for the US weightlifting team (York), learned about testosterone injections from the Soviets at the 1954 World Weightlifting Championships in Vienna. He then began experimenting with it on York lifters John Grimek, Jim Park, and Yaz Kuzahara. Not sure what the initial effects for them were but apparently they weren't significant enough to continue to use it as they ceased any further testosterone experimentation for the rest of the 50s. Ziegler started experimenting on his team with Dianabol in 1958 and by the early 60s it had spread to the bodybuilding world. So most likely, the first anabolic steroid use by western bodybuilders began with Dianabol in the late 50s/early 60s rather than testosterone.

All the top guys in the 1960's had amazing genetics AND were taking dianabol.

Good job Reg wasn't a 1960's guy, he'd already peaked by 1958. At his appearance's in 65 and more so in 1970, 71 and 73 he was somewhat slimmer

Im afraid steroids have been around since the 1940s and although Reg Park was probably drug free at the 180lb-200lb mark once he flew to America and met Joe Weider he was definitely on steroids he then competed at 225lb-240lb while matching world record lifts like a 500lb bench press as a bodybuilder...c'mon folks there was never a golden age of bodybuilding they were all on it.....if not where are all our 240lb natural bodybuilders now?? Ive been to a lot of natural bodybuilder competitors over the years and these guys are all way under 200lb. Ive been training all my life as a natural you can either get big and smooth or small and ripped you cant put on 40lbs of muscle while cutting for a show ffs!! End of debate!!
@StrengthUniverse4 күн бұрын
Only testosterone has been around since the early 1940's, and even then due to it's very short half-life it was not massively effective. It wasn't until the late 1950's that other steroids became available but by that time Reg had already hit his peak. Reg's maximum stage weight was 226lbs. I have personally known natural Bodybuilders of 6'1" tall and that weight. Reg's training method was 5 sets of 5 reps that has been proven in subsequent years to be an ideal set and rep range for strength and is used by many powerlifters.
@derrickjamieson34113 күн бұрын
Yes, that's right and he was on it and testosterone propionate which is what they were taking allows you to put on about a stone of muscle even on "trt" amounts over a yearly period whilst increasing your strength and lean body mass...remember he wasn't freaky big and he certainly had excellent genetics but no natural bodybuilders were hitting world record 500lb bench presses while in competition shape, its completely unachievable as a natural. Just look at his "car lift" and the hydraulic jack holding up the car, if he can "fool" a gullible public over that he's certainly able to convince the public he was a "natural" to sell his magazine & supplements you said it yourself he and his dad had the monopoly contract with the Weider brothers in the UK who did so much damage with their nonsense "supplements" and "gadgets" that ALL professional bodybuilders claimed was the secret to their success, they were under contract to Weider and weren't allowed to be honest about their drug use. They were all on them as much as I want to believe otherwise...its just not true. We were all lied to!!

@@derrickjamieson3411 Unbelievable assumptions. There was NO steroids other than testosterone until 1958, by which time Reg had already won 2 Mr Universe titles and achieved his best lifts so no he wasn't using dianabol. As stated in the video, he pressed 500lbs during the 7 years in which he didn't compete, so he wasn't in competition shape. The Parks did NOT have a monopoly contract, it was a primary contract which meant others could sell the products. Not long after that contract was signed Reg grow tired of Joe Weider, lying and taking credit for his hard work and decisions so he wrote him a letter telling him as much, so again another incorrect assumption by yourself. Reg made no physical gains between 1957 and 1965 and even lost about 10lbs of size from then on, competing at about 216lb at 6'1", had he been using steroids, that would not have been the case. Reg's physique didn't manifest any of the typical signs of steroid use.
@derrickjamieson34113 күн бұрын
@@StrengthUniverse Testosterone was most definitely available and was given to holocaust survivors and other prisoners just after the second World War who were in such poor physical shape, many near death to quickly put on weight & strength. Bodybuilders in the 50s were 100% using Testosterone and by the 60s using Dianabol hence the rapid change & imorovement in the quality of Bodybuilders in that era (Larry Scott) So, in order to "guarantee" Bodybuilders are natural really you need to look at Bodybuilders pre-WW2, some critics would even question that since Testosterone although developed in the 1930s wasn't readily understood or available. I'm not having a go I greatly admire Reg Park & other Silver Era Bodybuilders but him & Bill Pearl & many others probably did take Testosterone & denied it. Sorry to burst your bubble but look at the difference in his physique front when he was 180-200lb & natural (he was pretty smooth) to his physique post America 25lb heavier yet more defined & vascular & considerably stronger.
