Correct, The other funny thing is a Deadlift Suit may add 30kg (66lbs) to your deadlift but usually a lot less which for a strongman maybe about 7% extra. A Multi Ply Bench Shirts can add over 225kg (500lbs) to a bench which for these guys is an additional 75%! so times even more

Related: I did a deeper dive today into Mark Henry vs. Paul Anderson and never realized just how closely matched they are in strength, it's insane. I couldn't exactly compare their Olympic lifts since they competed under different rules, but for static strength this is how it went: Squat: Equal. Mark's best squat in training was 1,006 lbs, presumably with wraps, while Paul did 930 raw without a belt. Both were claimed to have a 771 lb front squat. While travelling with the WWF in 1998 Mark squatted 855 lbs for 3 reps without wraps; Paul's best in training was 850 for 6. This may be a bit generous for Mark, but considering the bench qualifications below I think it balances out. Bench: Paul, 627 lbs vs 585 lbs. Though, there's less documentation for Paul lifting over 550 lbs than there is for Mark; the heaviest I have him doing in a photo is 525 lbs. Given his overhead strength I think he really did press 600+, and Doug Hepburn didn't deny it when writing about Anderson later on. Deadlift: Mark, 925 lbs vs 820 lbs. Paul's strongman deadlift was possibly higher than Mark's, but seeing as how I can't quantify Paul's grip other than knowing he was far weaker in that department than Mark Henry - who had one of the strongest hands of all time - I used the raw deadlift here. I also don't know what Mark's equipped max was (he did 401 kg for 2 reps at the 2002 ASC). Overhead press: Paul, 485 lbs vs 425 lbs (calculated based off Mark's 405 lbs x 3 reps while travelling with the WWF). Possibly at the top of his game Mark was good for 200 kg, but still not enough to beat Paul. Grip: Mark, by a mile. He deadlifted over 100 lbs more than Paul without straps and was the first man to clean (not swing lift) the Thomas Inch dumbbell. The numbers work out like this: Paul: 930 squat + 627 bench + 820 deadlift + 485 press = 2862 lbs Mark: 930 squat (I assume above he was equal to Paul in the raw squat) + 585 bench + 925 deadlift + 425 press = 2865 lbs With the assumptions made plus margin of error on both sides it's impossible to say who was stronger. Although I wish I could have found some data on their pulling strength (i.e, rows, pullups), this really solidified it for me that these two are the pinnacle of modern drug-free strength. Would be great to see a video comparison at some point in the future!

Quick correction Eddie was still wearing a suit on the 465kg lift. He just didn't have the top on. As for Mendelsons claims... I believe the 900 x 6 but it was a rack pull. Just like if you ask him how much he benches, he will say he has benched 1000lbs or more every week for 19 years now. He doesn't add that it's off a 3 board. Ya know. Kinda like telling a half truth. Still a ton of weight though. I trained with him.. Legitimately. In 2007 when he and kennelly were having their rivalry. It was scary to see it in person around "normal" weights of 4 and 5 kg plates.
@StrengthUniverse2 жыл бұрын
The 465kg deadlift was suit-less, the 463 was with a pulled down single ply which would have provided very little to no advantage. Re Scots deadlift, while it's possible it was a rack pull, Mark Bell specifically asks Scot (with a surprised look) "A regular deadlift" and Scot replies "Yes regular deadlift".

People don’t realize that raw powerlifting wasn’t very popular when Mendelson was at his peak. If he had wanted to take a total record at that time, he would have had to optimize his lifts with full, multi-ply equipment, which is basically a different sport. I have a few questions on the elephant bar actually Like, how heavy is the bar and why is it so much difficult to deadlift with the elephant bar than a regular bar
@StrengthUniverse2 жыл бұрын
The bar is 10ft long and as far as can see, weighs about 103lbs. When lifters are accustomed to an elephant their max deadlift seems to be comparable to a standard bar; it just takes time to get used to the additional bend and whip of the bar. Not necessarily more difficult then a standard deadlift bar, just different
@richardpeterson44402 жыл бұрын
I’ve used an elephant bar in competition. It was 10’ long and 65lbs, maybe 30mm thick. It only seems to make a big difference at really high weight. Even at a new PB of 600lbs It felt very similar to a deadlift bar.
@bingbong82392 жыл бұрын
@@StrengthUniverse My God, it's that heavy? And I see Thanks for answering
@jburton91032 жыл бұрын
Elephant bar is definitely heavier because the lifter creates a whip effect by taking the slack out of the bar during the initial phase of pulling it off the floor. It is definitely easier than a conventional bar, which is (one reason) why you don’t see the poundages lifted in powerlifting meets that are lifted in strongman

@@bingbong8239 Thats the weight I eastimate it to be based on eddie halls 1021lb deadlift for which the bar was loaded with 18 x 45lb plates (900lbs) and 2 collars (11lbs each) so the bar would be about 100lbs

@@eshay we know he benched 715 in comp, but 735 where?
@sandorb60302 жыл бұрын
His 600 bench @ 18 was undoubtedly equipped, since he talked about 900 lbs benches by other competitors in his first comp. He didn’t mean raw. His squat and deadlift are doubtable.

I'll give Scot the benefit of the doubt that he's not lying about his best lifts, but even if he's being truthful you can't be your absolute strongest in all 3 lifts in a powerlifting meet. The fatigue from squatting maximal weights slightly lowers your strength on the bench press, and the combined fatigue from squatting and benching further lowers your strength on the deadlift. Your total in a full meet might be 10% less than the sum of your ability in the three lifts.

I remember back in 2012-2013, Eddie Hall posted (on his KZbin channel) of him bench pressing 300kg at 23yrs old. He must of removed that video.

that was equipped

Maybe Scott is bullsh*tting but I heard Dave Hoff say on video that Scott Mendelson was the strongest guy that he'd ever seen prior to Scott's car crash which resulted in a few inches of his lower leg being amputated before doctors reattached his foot. Hoff is credible in my opinion.
@StrengthUniverse2 жыл бұрын
They removed his ankle which resulted in his leg being a couple of inches shorter. Unfortunately that statement "strongest guy that he'd ever seen" doesn't quantify anything. The fact that Scot's claimed squat jumped from 900 to 1000 and deadlift from 880 for 1 to 900 x 6 shows that it's lies. The other thing is the original claims (S900 & D880) were quoted with an equipped bench press which would appear to mean that the squat and deadlift could equipped too

It’s weird how an imperial sport like powerlifting (the numbers never lie) attracts fantasists like SM. I guess his problems stem from deep (and well deserved) feelings of inadequacy?

Not even a question, they've come out pretty close and you're judging on power lifting events, let's add in an overhead like the axle press and see how much Eddie dominates.
