Situation very well narrated by Ravi Shastri; Gavaskar carried the burden of his team's batting on his little shoulder most of the times; faced the toughest and roughest fast bowlers of his era with guts and determination. Never ran away from opening the innings, as has been seen in post Gavaskar's era. Once Gavaskar got out, the funeral procession would start. Remember 1974 Summer of 42 in England? Then India would open the bowling with spinners which is hilarious coming to think of it. This is back when there were no TVs; had to listen to commentary on noisy AM radio stations.

I grew up w Sunny as my idol. His record against the WI at their peak 13 centuries in 27 tests at an avg of 65. I don't think there is another batsman to compare to that in history. We will never know if Don could have done better or not. Sachin is also terrific b/c he did so well against Aus at their peak and other teams, plus his ODI record and his bowling. But as a sheer opening test batsman, Sunny will still be the best all time.

I don't thing Gavaskar is the greatest batsman of India...in my opinion he is the greatest batsman the world has produced. All other batting greats like Bradman, Chappel, Ponting, Richards, Lara etc had top quality fast bowlers in their own team, while India had none during those times (Kapil Dev came much later). Which means Gavaskar had to face ALL the top fast bowlers of that time while the other batsmen would never face their own fast bowlers. Also they were used to batting on the fast pitches of theirs while Gavaskar's upbringing was on the slow pitches of India. So his batting had a much higher degree of difficulty and inspite of that he became the highest run getter with the highest test centuries of his time, so if you do a proper like to like comparison he comes out as the best batsman of all time...at the most you can include Bradman along with him at the top but no one else.

Sunil & I were in same school.. Same class .Our school was St Xavier's school...He was a prodigy.. When we were in 6 or 7 th Std..There was a match between Teachers & Students .. He went to bat ..Bowler was Father Fritz ..a school coach .. Sunny played well at Georgetown but the real highlight of the series was Jimmy "my name is courage" Amarnath. The 90 odd he scored at Bridgetown was one of the best the WI had ever seen. That included a few consecutive sixes of Holdiing at his best. For that period between 82-84, he was indisputably the best player of fast bowling. Unfortunately, did not last but while it lasted, it was a treat..

Gavaskar was a great opening batsman but he fared miserably in that 1983 series. He scored 20, 0, 1 & 32 in the first two tests. That 147 n.o. was scored on the last day of that drawn third Test match on a slow Guyana wicket when there was no result possible in that rain ruined match. He promptly failed in the next two tests at Barbados and Antigua (2, 19, 18 & 1). Jimmy Amarnath was the hero of that series and the one before that in Pakistan. He was the one who displayed tons of courage and in fact, after getting hit by a bouncer at Barbados hooked the first ball after resuming his innings for a six! It is another matter altogether that Amarnath suddenly lost his touch and scored just one run in six innings against the very same Windies on their tour of india later that year! Shastri gets it all wrong when he says there were seniors in that West Indies team "like Lloyds (sic) when compared to Richards, Greenidge etc". Lloyd was the only senior guy (he debuted in 1966) and Roberts, Richards, Greenidge, Gomes and Holding all made their debuts around the same time (1974-75 and 1975-76).

In 11 test matches against the West Indies in 1983, Gavaskar scored 745 runs in 20 innings ( not out twice on 236 and 147) averaging 41.38 with 3 100s and 1 half century (90). In those 4 innings he scored 594 runs (averaging 297.00) while in the remaining 16 innings he scored 151 runs (averaging 9.43) He was caught behind by Dujon 9 times in 18 completed innings, his wicket being taken 7 times each by Marshall and Holding.

I do not know of this incident which Shastri said.But i will tell you an incident which i had seen during 1983 WI tour of India.In that test match Malcom Marshall was bowling at his dangerous pace. Gavasker's bat flew from his hands and fell somewhere near short leg while playing him .Gavasker was out for 0 and 7 runs ,both the inning out to Marshal.Everyone thought Gavasker is at the end of his career and his reflexes are not as good as before. In the next test,i saw Gavasker batting like V. Richards smashing all the WI bowlers with disdain,in the process ,he made his fastest test century 121 in 128 balls..For days i could not beleive what i saw that day.Can Gavasker play such hurricane innings in a test match against the battery of WI fast bowlers(Marshal,Holding,Winston Davis,Daiel).Then it struck me Gavasker had a point to prove against them.This was indeed bravne act for us to remember.This incident was similar to G.sobers smashing double century against D.Lilee and company when Aus played against World X1,when Sobers was out for a duck facing Lilee bouncer in the previous test.

I too watched the full series on TV, and very clearly remember the Delhi test match where he scored the 29 test hundred to equal Sir Don Bradman's record. In the first test match Marshall was at his best, think the test match was at Kanpur, and in the first innings only Dilip Vengsarkar could play the fiery west indies pace battery, he scored 59, if I am not wrong and was the highest scorer. The last test match was in Chennai where Gavaskar again scored a double century and was not out on 236. In that sweltering Chennai (Madras) summer heat, gavaskar a long innings, he was very tired at the end if it. That series will always be remembered for West Indian team's all-round performance, they had the best, fastest and fiercest bowling attacks and also the best batting attacks in the world. Very fortunate to have seen the complete series.

That series was after 1983 world cup victory... West Indies toured India & extracted sweet revenge by defeating India 3-0 in a five test match series & white washed India 5-0 in one day series... I remember every single match of that series. Some very fond memories of that series are etched in my mind. Like after being 8 wickets down for 90, at Kanpur , stupendous partnership between Binny & Madan Lal, wherein Binny smashed Andy Roberts for 5 fours in a single over & Madan's gritty 63 not out ; Gavaskar's centuries at Delhi & Madras, Kapil's 9 wkt haul in an innings at first ever test at Motera, Ahmedabad & debut of Sidhu & Richie Richardson in that series. But biggest disappointment was complete failure of India's world cup hero Mohinder Amarnath who had smashed 3 centuries against WI in WI earlier that year against the likes of Holding, Roberts, Marshall & Garner.

Gavaskar sir was a run machine, a one man army, a diminutive genius who dwarfed many batsmen of his era. He was a masterclass in playing the menacing, outstanding fast bowling on seamer-friendly wickets, and class spin bowling on spinner-friendly wickets. An absolute legend. In my opinion, the greatest batsmen to have played the game. I've come back to this clip after 2 years and I'm still speechless. Sunny was and still is the best test opener of all time. No one comes close and that's not even an overstatement. Some might say Cook but even Cook didn't have to face the fast bowling in the 70s and 80s with a stick for a bat and that too without a helmet and no rules to protect your life. It was wild, especially against West Indies and the Aussies and then to have scored 10,000 runs is unimaginable and in that 13 of his 34 hundreds came against the best bowling lineup ever assembled. Yes. We are fortunate to live in the era of Gavaskars and Marshalls. Both are exemplary in their respective job. I have followed this in radio commentary and The Hindu. SMG is on the best technical batsman I have ever seen or heard. He can play either way which has been proved. It is quite unfortunate that during the time of tendulkars and dravids, the quality of carribean speedesters has been drastically came down which was a great loss for cricket lovers

Shastri is Feku. He got chance playing in test by luck. India was touring in New Zealand n Dilip Doshi got Hurt then they called Shastri to be in Indian squad. That's how he got in test matches. In those days plenty dirty Politics were playing. You'll find at least 5 - 6 players from Mumbai.

I was 7 in 1971 and didn't really understand cricket well, but I remember EVERYONE talking about Gavaskar in Trinidad. There's a song about that Indian team, the chorus goes .... 'It was Gavaskar, the real master, just like a wall, they couldn't out Gavaskar at all, the West Indies couldn't out Gavaskar at all'. In one verse the singers says the names of some of the Indian players then "these can really play cricket, on any kind of wicket, they made the west indies team look so bad." I know now Sunny was making his debut. He averaged over 150 in 8 innings! On debut! I remember the 1976 tour better and Sunny getting a century in Trinidad (again). Having seen guys like Sunny makes me a cricket snob, because if there was as much cricket as there is now ...

I don't know why Shastri praising the Greatness of the West Indian team when they didn't bother checking how Gavaskar was doing when he got hit. If they did what Shastri described, it meant that they don't respect the fellow humans. As soon as a batsman gets hit that bad, the sport should be secondary and the care for a fellow human should take over. I remember Shoib Akthar's bouncer hitting Brian Lara on his head. The moment that happened, Shoib forgot about everything else and he ran to Lara and offered help. For him, at that moment everything else was secondary. It was very clear that he was only playing cricket to take wickets and not to kill someone. I call that Greatness. End of the day, we are all humans and if a fast bowler thinks he is not human, please don't call that Greatness.

KISH KUMAR the Greatness of West Indies team wasn't dependant on their rude attitude at that time,but rather the team had depth and the players were skilled in batting and bowling.They were in a class of their own.They were feared by all teams because they were darn good.Every team from England to Australia will attest to that. It was about being tough. They gave no quarter and expected none in return. Those guys were not there to mollycoddle you. To them, it wasn't just cricket, it was war. I think it's anyone who has the right to complain, it's the people who played against them (like Shastri and Gavaskar). If they're admiring it, I reckon there must be something to it. Like an unspoken code among soldiers, no matter what flag they salute to.
