For the “China” crowd: 1) If Taiwan is certainly part of China, then why is the word “reunification” used? 2) If Taiwan needs to be “reunified” with Taiwan, then why use the word “separatist”? 3) If “reunification” means the PRC controlling Taiwan, why? It would be next to impossible for China to even build up the size of fleet that would be needed to invade Taiwan. The U.S. Navy had 300 ships eleven of which were fleet aircraft carriers and 18 battleships when they assaulted Okinawa and that was 1944. China would need three times that to land personnel on Taiwan. They would have to commandeer every cargo ship in the country and it would take weeks and be very obvious. Not to mention the 100 miles of open ocean they would have to cross to get there and Taiwan will have hundreds of missiles and shells for everyone of them. I personally don't think China will invade but we'll see.

Don't even consider nuclear weapons unless the US is willing to sacrifice the destruction of its own cities and loss of innocent American lives. Just think how many US warships and aircrafts carriers can be destroyed by China's hypersonic missiles before they can even come close to China. China has the biggest and most advanced navy in the region and with its close proximity to Taiwan, how in hell will the US come to Taiwan's aid unless it is willing to sacrifice its own, which we know it has not been willing to do in Ukraine in the proxy war with Russia. Any military provocation from US allies in the region, especially Japan and South Korea will spur China to retaliate with force and cause serious consequences to those smaller and weaker nations. Won't be surprise if North Korea and Russia will take advantage and settle old scores with a weaken US in another war it cannot afford and win. Remember, the US can't even defeat the Taliban in Afghanistan after 20 years, what makes you think it can beat China in its home ground?

From the day Formosa was discovered by the Portuguese till now, it has never been part of China under any name. And judging by the education level of Chinese citizens like you, it will never become.

San Francisco Peace Treaty is not valid for USSR and China, since both of them didn't sign it. It is illegal to treat the Chinese asset in this treaty. Above that, you need to learn history, Taiwan is in Chinese government control since Ming Dynasty. If there is no control, why the island was transfered to Japan after Sino-Japan war in 1895? I have a theory why the US (& Japan) do not want Taiwan to declare independence. At the moment the Taiwan Strait has open waters allowing freedom of navigation. If Taiwan were to declare independence, then the PRC and Taiwan's Exclusive Economic Zones would overlap therefore the Taiwan Straight would no longer have open waters. Just a thought.

Currently both parts have their own administrations but during the civil war Taiwan was the government and China were the rebels.
