How Taiwan Became the First in Asia To Legalize Same-Sex Marriage | Rainbow Guide to Life

Same-sex marriage became legal in Taiwan in May 24, 2019, after decades of advocacy by the LGBTQ community. The bill establishes limited legal rights for same-sex couples in terms of taxes, insurance and adoption. This landmark decision makes the self-ruled island the first place in Asia to pass gay marriage legislation.
But gay marriage is divisive in Taiwan, and the marriage equality bill is still incomplete. More than a year after the marriage equality bill was passed, LGBTQ rights groups are now calling for a full legal recognition for same-sex couples and queer families. Currently, transnational same-sex couples cannot marry in Taiwan unless both countries recognize same-sex marriage. LGBTQ couples also do not yet have the rights for surrogacy.
VICE World News speaks with veteran gay rights activist, Chi Chia-Wei, who has been lobbying for marriage equality as early as 1986, and other same-sex couples whose lives have been impacted by the legalization of queer marriages.
@5:26 - Due to an error introduced during editing, this story originally spelled President Tsai Ing-Wen's name as "Tasi Ing-Wen." The correct spelling is Tsai Ing-Wen. We regret the error.

Why can’t Japan do the same tho? Most countries in Asia like Saudi Arabia and Malaysia don’t allow same-sex marriage because of religion restrictions while Japan that has one of the highest number of atheist still can’t legalize gay marriage. It’s not like the religion is holding it back in Japan.
@shokikobo9826

@@zakwanarif you are right. Japan doesn't really have religious people but there is very unique and strongly rooted tendency in Japanese society, which is peer pressure and conservativeness. If you see the former chairperson of Tokyo olympic committee, mentioning gender stereotype, this shows how much Japan is still underdeveloped in terms of adopting new and flexible perspective.

Less birth Less baby declined population Weakening the country Until the world will be full of lgbt couple and left with less straight people to repopulate the world And Im sure you would rather the world to end struck by a meteor Another virus or a nuclear war than Knowing the human race to go extinct by dudes putting their eggplants in a butt hole with another guy

@@lit-ix1rk Geez I had a stroke reading that. "A few years from now it is estimated that 95% or more will be accepting lgbt thus giving more interest to the next gen to go homosexual" No, accepting lgbt will not turn someone straight into gay. Sexuality is something we got born with, not something we can catch in the wild like pokemons. Where did you pull this logic from? Your ass? And 'lgbt' stands for 'lesbian, gay, *bisexual* , trans' and for your info bisexual is someone that likes both genders so I don't see the world getting low on child birth. [13] ו "No asesinarás. [14] ז "No cometerás adulterio. [15] ח "No robarás. Cuando el pueblo lo vio, ellos temblaron. some places consider taiwan a country, and some places do not it is sorta like how the US does not consider palestine a country, and instead supports israel.... which many people have labeled as an apartheid and even so far as claiming it is genocidal (the US is pretty contradictory with what their media condemns and what they actually support)

Wow. After watching this, looks like things are coming along in Taiwan. Of course besides marriage, there have been cases where people from countries such as Japan and China who got married in Taiwan, got denied, brought it to court, and got approved. And then the joint adoption, it’s the beginning of hope. One couple got approved as parents of their adopted daughter.
