People don’t really get how unnerving the lack of something can be, I recently lost my mum and I can’t sleep without KZbin playing in the background because my brain is like wait there should be another person in the house. Another example of this is the opening to 28 days later, the guy wakes up in hospital and it’s abandoned but so is all of London and it just sets up the idea of something not been right.

I used to think that higher ocean levels and bigger predators were the best way to increase scares, but honestly I think playing on the "Unknown" factor is what gets the most scare out of someone. The migration mod is a great choice for this. If only the decreased creature spawns could somehow indicate when a large predator is in the area.

terror is generally increased when there's sections of safety, ie, _contrast_ if everything is trying to be as scary as possible, you'll just start to get used to it, while having areas of safety gives time to relax, get used to being safe, and gives a sense of apprehension/dread every time you need to leave it the surface is generally the safe area in subnautica, yet you cannot stay in it forever

Only thing I don’t like is that it’s too dark. Being able to barely see the reaper at the edge of where the water becomes too thick to see through is so scary. But it’s so dark now that it’s just kinda a jump scare, but they get old very fast.

Not going to lie, The Silence really did give me a jump because of how sudden it was. Aside from that, I've had it in my head for a giant creature out in the Void that could span vast portions of the planet. (Like a giant amoeba) It's main body would be down at the bottom, so impossible to ever see. It would feast on anything that roamed the region, including Ghost Leviathans. It is as quiet as The Silence and would simply reach up to ensnare its victims in a sticky, black tentacle that could wrap around a Cyclops or other Leviathans. ....and pull you down to crush depths to feed.

My favorite part of the idea is how quiet it would be. You're driving your Cyclops through the Void and decide to check your inventory. There's no warning as your depth meter starts increasing. You're dead and don't even know it.

This was actually a cut concept biome from the game. It was supposed to be a completely empty biome except for a comically large unicellular organism that was extremely sensitive to light, and would snatch you if you had too much light or were moving too fast.

There was a time when I was playing the subnautica multiplayer mod with my friends. However I was using a hotspot instead of my internet. I don’t know what happened but when I tried to join the server my game glitched and it put me in a different subnautica world. I swam around and noticed that everything looked a little darker. There were also no living things. No fish no leviathans no nothing. A lot of flora like grass and plants were also gone. However flora that was just textures on the terrain were still there. This was one of the scariest moments I’ve ever had with subnautica. It was so weird. It felt like a subnautica liminal space. It’s hard to describe but this weird mystery world gave me an intense feeling of dread and unease. It kinda looked like how it does in this video only less dark. It felt so disturbing. All of this actually happened by the way. It must have been because my computer was using my phone’s hotspot instead of the Wi-Fi. The combination of there being no creatures and the flora being gone just made it feel so empty and uncanny. If anyone else has had something like this happen feel free to tell me. I would love to know if anyone else has experienced this.

The thing I love about Subnautica is that, despite having thalassaphobia myself, I can't help but get invested into the world of Planet 4546B regardless. It almost feels calming whenever I see people going through some of the safer areas, cuz at that point I know it won't get "bad" until you reach certain areas... But then adding mods like this onto it makes those "safer" arsas feel more unfamiliar and by extention scarier. The unknown feeling that the biomes you once saw as the more relaxing areas of the game could now be home to something truly unwanted and you'd never know until you heard its roars off in the dark distance... or worse.

I could think of a few things that might make this even spookier. Somehow make the big enemies completely silent until they are close to you (idk how you'd do that), increasing the amount of fog, limiting your view distance even more, have the game permanently nighttime, make the underwater ambience quieter (which also makes the Silence harder to recognize), remove the non-eerie songs and make the eerie ones play universally
