Matpat, a couple of minor things about the aurora. The crash size was probably affected by a few things not stated in the episode. The captain's log makes it clear that he was still steering the ship when it went down with the intent on trying to minimize damage to the ship. He knew it needed to remain intact for a rescue to be possible. This, combined with the fact that the game takes place on the top of an inactive volcano instead of the ocean bottom, could account for why the damage was as small as it was. The aurora might have hit water first and then hit ground after slowing down.

@@mememan1546 Perhaps since they are only found places near electricity and radiation(The aurora, the dunes with it's alien things, and the mountains with the alien base) they were created by the Pre-cursors to suck up radiation from the Degasi ship's crash. They would absorb the radiation, but in living with so much of it, went blind from radiation and developed echolocation to help with the murky junk filled waters. They eventually escaped and repopulated, creating the ones we know now, and when the Aurora crashed three went from the dunes(This is why the dunes has the least) and started feasting.

Important point (spoiler if anyone cares): blame the “Architects”. The Aurora was shot down, by an automated weapon. Another important point is time. Time is compressed for gameplay reasons. After all when the Sunbeam attempts to Mount their rescue - they announce they’re more than a week away. It doesn’t take a week before they show. & of course Sunbeam is also shot down, as was the Degassi years earlier. Humans didn’t doom that planet. Oh and one more important thing you seem to have missed; the Aurora’s captain stayed aboard to attempt a controlled crash landing. This is why the damage doesn’t match what you claimed would wipe out the whole zone. She didn’t simply auger in at terminal velocity.

Hello Matpat, excuse my possibly clunky use of the english language. I was really excited about a Subnautica theory because of the incredible lore this beautiful game has to offer. This however turned out to be more of a TeamSeas ad then a theory. Believe me when I say, I'm a big fan of your theories in general, but this time just a pinch of actual research lets it fall apart. Please see the following evidence: The Impact of the craft being catastrophic: Logs you can find in the game (e.g. Lifepod 19 Second Officer Keen's Voicelog) confirm that the captain of the Aurora took over manual control and tried to execute a controlled descent of the ship after the midair/orbital incident. As the Aurora was trying to use the planet for a swing-by-maneuver it's trajectory in relation to the surface would have already been flat and due to its speed the craft would be able to hold this flat approach for a while. This would lead to the Aurora hitting the planet's surface at a much more controlled angle and potentially lower speed in the end compared to a "falling out of the sky" scenario, and therefore much less damage to the geology around the crash site. The waste of the Aurora being a danger to the ecosystem: While there certainly will be an impact of some items on that ship, it should be argued that a civilization this advanced will not rely on plastic as the material of their products. The fabricator (one of the game's crafting stations), where you craft the basic versions of the drinkable water items in the game, materializes them, bottle and all, from midair using some magical 3D printing laser synthesizing. Even if the bottle was made from polymer (I personally think they are made from metal, looking at the model, or rather from some sort of completely organic material as you can craft a water bottle using a fish as input material only), trash would not be an issue. A good indicator for this is the buildable trash can in the game. Its description says that it "Permanently deconstruct[s] unwanted items and safely release[s] their constituent atoms into the atmosphere." The same can be said for the similar functioning "Nuclear Waste Disposal" which also permanently deletes Nuclear Waste from existence. This technology exists and Below Zero shows there to be an ongoing human presence on the planet, so accumulating waste shouldn't be a thing. The radiation (could also insert dissolved chemicals) being a danger to the wildlife of 4546B: As it has been said, the radiation as a result of the leaking drive core would dissipate after a while, should the breaches be sealed. So there is a finite amount of radioactive material/radiation actually finding its way into the environment, that means it will start to be diluted by the ocean. The map we are playing on in Subnautica is called The Crater and is about 2x2km in size according to the data bank entry (Fun Fact: The actual size of the map is almost double that) with the rest of the planet (excluding Sector Zero) being an ecological deadzone with only microscopic and leviathan life. That would mean that the ocean currents would transport the majority of the radioactive material out of this small inhabited crater's area in no time. Your example of the radioactive material from the Fukushima disaster making it all the way to Canada in a really short timespan proves my point. The radiation spreads out, therefore gets weaker and as there is no source for more unnatural radiation to come from anymore, the affected volume of the medium (the water) will be moved and spare the crater. I sure hope we'll get a Subnautica episode about the extensive lore in the future. But hey, that's just a theory. A comment-section theory :)

The creatures in Subnautica are already used to (small amounts of) radiation. Here’s my proof: in most deeper biomes you can find radioactive crystals exposed underwater. The PDA talks about the radiation, and when you pick them up you can hear a Geiger counter make a radioactive sound. Reapers and Sandsharks thrive close enough to the Aurora even right after the explosion where the effects would be highly fatal for us without the proper equipment. Even jellyrays which have barely any protection behave normally in high doses of radiation. We might have killed a lot of the wildlife, but certainly not most of it.

Overall you've made some very compelling arguments, but I feel I have to point out two potential oversights. Most glaring is that in the audio and text logs you can find scattered around the game, it is revealed that the captain of the ship stayed on board until the very end to make a controlled decent. While not a proper landing, I feel it lends some credence as to why the crash zone is as small as it is. Perhaps it wasn't a proper or gentle landing, but neither was it a full force crash from orbital height. Coupled with a few other theories I've seen, the site of the crash may not have actually been shallow water. There may have been some small degree of dry land, which would explain why the terrain goes so far up to meet the ship nearly all the way around, even poking above the water for a sizable area around the shull of the Aurora. Secondly, with the exception of the truly absurd number of water bottles required to survive, you don't encounter much actual plastic. There may even be reason to suggest the water bottles might not even be plastic as we understand it today. In some cases, they almost resemble more of a metallic container. Though I feel a lot was overlooked in the creation of the game on that point, as no materials are actually required to create the container the water goes into. The bottle just seems to materialize out of nothing during the crafting process. Coupled with that, is the food seen on the ship and various cargo containers scattered throughout the environment. Most are not shown to have any individual containment or packaging of any kind (which is only stranger considering most are found stuffed into cargo boxes). Given the technological level portrayed, it's unlikely that food was brought pre-prepared from another world. And although the ingredients aren't shown or explained, the "Nutrient Block" in my opinion most closely resembles something akin to pemmican. A dry, often bready and nutrient right brick with a frankly mind-boggling shelf life that is often made mainly by survivalists today, and historically in many parts of the world. The logical conclusion is that given how technology has taken over, no one actually makes or stores these food bricks, but instead has them crafted at various and potentially specialized fabricators on the main ship (before the crash). As they can not be made by the player, either they were destroyed in the crash, or remain locked away into areas of the ship that could not be reached due to structural damage (or most likely, something simply overlooked in game development).

While I appreciate Matt's dedication to getting the facts, his information with regards to nuclear power and reactors is a bit off. I've been working in the nuclear power field for nearly a decade and its miscommunicated information like this that scares people. With out context of scale talking about radiation means very little. Explaining the values compared to chest x-rays, standard airplane flights or even bananas (yes they are radioactive) helps put things into context. Additionally the safety features in reactors are typically very well engineered and in the community we study what went wrong at both Fukushima and Chernobyl to ensure disasters like that never happen again. Matt in the future it would be nice to see you do a collaboration with somebody from the nuclear power field to explain the differences from game to reality. A lot of peoples only knowledge of nuclear power comes from movies or games, which often depict it as bad. No technology is inherently good or bad, its about who we use it.

For example, sailors on board nuclear missile subs (meaning they are powered by a nuclear reactor, as are all active duty submarines in the US Navy) actually received less overall radiation exposure per year then your average person does due to spedning about half the year under water and thus not exposed to sunlight. Meaning living in a small metal tube with a nuclear reactor going 24/7 results in less radiation exposure then just taking a stroll outside on a sunny day.

I was thinking that too. I had to write a report on multiple different occasions about which type of energy system I think would be best for the future of the planet, and it’s always been nuclear power. Of course, my ideal is nuclear fission, but that’s currently improbable. But out of all of them, nuclear has always been the most productive, currently powering like 70% France maybe I think fact check that, the most safe if handled appropriately and legally(Chernobyl was a massive fuckup of so many rules and regulations by Russia and what not to do), and has the most likely future in powering the earth. I’m sorry green people, but wind, solar, geothermal, etc just won’t power the earths current energy need, even together. And I’m sorry fossil people, but the earth can’t keep using it not only because it’s damaging to animals and people, but because it’s not renewable and we’re running out. Plus, green energy also damages the environment, we just don’t talk about it. Nuclear does by far, from my research, which is probably minuscule compared others, the least damage to the environment when handled properly.

Because it is futuristic technology it was most likely a fusion reactor. Or even better, if humans figured out a way to produce large amounts of antimatter efficiently, antimatter is the most efficient fuel possible (100% of the energy is released in antimatter-matter collisions) and if the storage system for the antimatter was even slightly damaged and even an extremely small amount of antimatter collided with regular matter it would cause a massive explosion of radiation. Also that would explain why the computer calls it a "quantum explosion".

I've been telling this for years to everyone I know that's scared of nuclear power (imo the best powersource we have atm): The likelihood of a nuclear reactor going full meltdown like chernobyl or Fukushima is virtually 0, Especially since then they have absolutely outdone themselves in terms of safety measures and security features. And addressing the topic of nuclear waste, I'm pretty sure that scientists around the globe are working on 2 new types of reactors: one where you can re-use spent fission material until it becomes something like the sun has with iron OR a thorium reactor, which would just produce a side product that we can use for construction etc. I'm no expert on nuclear power or reactors, I'm just a student doing his A-levels. If I said anything incorrect, please do educate me.

Hi! As someone who’s played this game dozens of times, I have a *few* things to say about this theory: While the area surrounding the crash site doesn’t seem as damaged as it should be, the surface is only a small part of this game. A lot of this game, if not most, takes place *below* the ocean floor in underwater caves. As for the batteries, most of the batteries found in this game are still sealed in Alterra containers when found. Even if the batteries were exposed, and their copper contents spilling into the ocean, copper is already a naturally occurring recourse on this planet’s ocean floor surface. Also, this theory says that tens of thousands of wreckage are unaccounted for because there would be a lot more debris than just the metal scraps, but look not further than the *entire thruster* that detached from the Aurora during its crash, or in space orbiting the planet seen as the Neptune 01 rocket leaves the planet. And even if the negative effects of the Aurora’s crash exceeded the map we are given to explore during the game, the game takes place on a thermal crater risen above the ocean floor. The ocean surrounding the crash site is just an empty abyss as seen by the sheer drop off at the edge of the map. One final note is that the *entire* planet was doomed to the Kharaa bacterium long before the Aurora’s crash, and while the Aurora killed a significant amount of flora and fauna living on the thermal crater, the player onboard cured the planet of the deadly Kharaa and, as we see in Below Zero, it seems to have worked given the only Kharaa we see in the sequel is on a frozen leviathan. Sorry, not to be “that guy,” but I feel very passionately about this game and its story :) I understand that the cause for this theory is greater than just a video game and it’s pretty cool you guys are raising money to clean our non-fictional oceans!

Just a quick edit: Matt, I'm sure no one means to bash your message (hopefully at least), but there were a few key details missing in your theory. that being said, I think another game that could also serve to help the message is Raft Survival as it's a little closer to home. Keep up the good work, your episodes are always really gripping to watch! Lore-wise it would actually be incorrect to say that it's the human's fault for causing the pollution in the first place. *SPOILER WARNING, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED OF THE SPOILER* The crash was caused by the architect's global defense system. So while yes the human's brought the trash and other pollutants to 4546b, it was by no means their fault, per say. That being said, you forgot to mention the other ship that gets shot down, if you don't disable the global defense system in time, and all the pollutants that get brought along with it.

(a couple of things) In the game, in order to actually leave the planet, you need to repair the drive core, which means no more radiation. Even if the bottles are plastic, they're stuck at the bottom of the ocean by the containers, as none are floating around, and only a human can open the containers. There is no life around the Aroura's crash site to feed on the plastic, as rabbit tails are veggie-eaters, and the reaper is so large that it would likely ignore the tiny bottles. A reaper is by the tail end of the crash site, meaning that it is highly likely that the Aurora is completely fine to be around, even with all the negative effects. There are many underground areas that would not feel the affects of sediment displacement, radiation, or pollution. If the destruction from the Aurora is so bad, then why isn't all life extinct from the Degasi, seeing as it had ample time to kill anything around it, but didn't and is flourishing with sealife. If the destruction from the Aurora is so bad, then why is there life hanging around the remains of Sunbeam, seeing as it got the BFG treatment? Even if all life on the crater is killed, life on 4546b will go on, by simple notion that the entire game takes place on what's basically a flooded continent surrounded by 'the void', allowing for life at the equator, void life, and whatever other areas there could be like the crater to continue on outside this chernobyl-like area of inhospitability. (I'll see if I can add more in edits, but this is what I got rn, so enjoy)

2 things. 1 in the game your PDA says too you that all the radiation is coming from the Aurora’s Power Core, which if you fix the Power Core the PDA then says that you have single handedly avoided a disaster. Or it says something like Crysis avoided I don’t remember the exact line. So the Radiation is no problem. 2. The entire Map of Subnautica is a giant Crater, and the Aurora crashed right on the edge of said Crater. If you look up a picture of the Subnautica map you’ll see what I’m talking about for yourself. What I’m saying here is would you Rather the Aurora fall 8,500 meters down, Thats as far as the Craters edge goes as far as the game tells us. Then the Radiation explodes outwords in every single direction. Because what happened when the Drive Core exploded was all the radiation leaked into the crater ya know where the game takes place. We also know as of Subnautica below Zero, that 4546B is now fully under control of the Federation. So we can assume that they have removed the Aurora or at least torn the vessel into smaller parts so they can be tossed into orbit We also know 1 other thing we know that the Aurora wasn’t traveling that fast when it hit the ocean ground, the Trailer for Subnautica starts with the captain of the vessel saying and I quote. “I’m attempting a controlled descend” AKA Slowing way down and pulling hard upwards to rip the speed WAYYYYY down. Also in Subnautic yes we still use Batteries and yes we use Copper however this changes later in the game where we discover Ion Crystal’s. Which according to the games PDA Has enough energy too match that of over 5 Million nukes combined, but its being released into a clean and reliable energy source that doesn’t harm anything. Something else… majority of the fish in Subnautica are immune or have high resistance to Radiation.

You can see the fish immediately start scavenging the wreck and tearing parts of the hull off for minerals in their actual bodies, I think they're much more adapted to high levels of elements than anyone thinks. Hell even the reapers come a calling hoping to find some juicy little meals, although I don't understand why they would chase the player seeing as how he's like 100000x smaller than them. I feel the need to point out some flaws in the expelled supply estimate. First of all, all of the supplies of the Aurora weren't expelled by the crash and explosion, as you can still find a lot in the areas of the ship that you can reach, with an unknown quantity within the inaccessible areas. Secondly, the Aurora wasn't the first ship to crash. The Degasi crashed almost a decade before that, and there aren't catastrophes stemming from that. Then there's also the fact that flora and fauna can be absurdly adaptable and resilient. You've got a pair of leviathans patrolling in close proximity to a lethal radioactive source seemingly unharmed, not to mention lizards that bathe in LAVA. Heck, you don't even need to look far to see strange adaptations. Tardigrades, for example, can survive radiation, extreme pressures both high and low, extreme temperatures, and even being exposed to outer space. And as others have pointed out, the Aurora's captain stayed until the end, attempting an emergency landing, as well as the fact we don't know what the crash zone previously looked like, but is suggested to have prehaps been landmass (or at least very shallow). It's also not completely Aurora's fault, the Architects didn't really plan things through when they just stuck a giant gun on the planet that shoots anything that comes close, because of "quarantine", as opposed to setting up a forcefield or something.

So, I enjoy subnautica and I'll correct a couple of points. The map is actually in the middle of an inactive volcano that forms a bowl. The reason there's such a massive dead zone around the map has more to do with the death of certain leviathans well before the player's and not because of the crash or radiation. Also, they hint that where the Aurora crashes was actually originally above water and gets leveled as a result of the crash, so the damage to ocean life is lessened. Also, as far as radiation is concerned, water is a good shield. That's not to say there will be no impact, but probably not that much and once it's gone, it's gone, unlike oil. And as far as the plastics are concerned, that's not great, but it's the least of that ocean's problems.

Considering how deep other theories dig, I'm kinda surprised how shallow this one was. From replicators removing the need for most packaging to the fact that the water bottles are made of organic materials to the relatively tiny amount of material the Aurora brought to the planet to the 'semi-controlled' landing the captain achieved to minimize impact damage. The crash would certainly have an impact on the ecology for sure but you could probably dump 100 Aurora's onto the planet and have less impact on 4546B than we've had on Earth and we're still around (though for how much longer is debatable). I get you were making a tie-in episode but it was disappointing that it was done with such a surface-level theory on a great game.

Aside from the fact that subnatica is set in the far future, making any conclusions drawn from our current technologies shaky at best, there are a few facts established in the game that throw Matt's conclusions into doubt. First, the existence of the fabricators means that food can be prepared to order without individual packaging, and that such packaging can be reused repeatedly and easily. This, combined with the fact that most small items on board the ship would be incinerated instead of released, makes his estimate of the amount of trash released by the crash laughable. Second, the sheer number of crashes that have happened on this planet without destroying it's ecosystems any more than the Karaa has puts his conclusion that the Aurora's crash is devastating into doubt.

I love game theory but mat you really missed with this one. It doesn’t sound like you played the game? I love and support the causes you’re doing but if you wanted to do a video on garbage and the sea then you should’ve done the game Raft, there is literally no trash in this game, no nutrients bars had wrappers, they came in mental boxes or where laying around in the Aurora. No items in the game besides native and natural material in the game can float about (besides metal salvage) also, batteries were ALL inside metal boxes so they couldn’t leak either. The game has Fabricators, a big thing that debunks much of what you said, and how things are made and… fabricated. You mentioned that the Aurora’s crash should have been bigger then it initially was and so was the explosion? In the PDA the Captan of the ship and stayed on and didn’t take a life pod just so that the crash wouldn’t be as bad as you said it was supposed to be. Yes, Aurora Corp is a greedy and evil company and take awful care of there employees but dang, they really were careful with taking care of a ocean planet, one a few Aurora Corp employees have been to before. You take about think game as if it’s taken place during OUR time in the universe, you statement about the waste and nothing on fabricators REALLY makes me think you didn’t play the game. This theory just felt like some cop out video to get out there, just make a quick video and get it out fast, type of video… sounded and felt dishonest or half assed… Again loved the channel and the cause you are doing but this game has so much potential for other “theory’s” really if you wanted one that is relevant to the cause then you should’ve done it on Raft. Also edit: another thing to point out, it wasn’t the players fault you crash landed into the planet, we were shot out. I think the area where the player themselves might have caused a problem is disabling the tower that shot the Aurora out of orbit, making so anything else can go in and out of the planet and carry the disease in and out of it spreading it to somewhere else or other planets. That is unless by that time the Sea Emperors kids haven’t already spread the cure around, killing the diseases completely or mostly

The one point I would like to tack on to your theory MatPat is our ability as the player to deconstruct and reconstruct matter at the atomic level using the fabricators we use throughout the game. With these devices we are able to deconstruct a bladder fish and transform its body into a water bottle containing filtered water. If we have the technology to convert organic matter into inorganic matter by simply pressing a button, then wouldn’t it make more sense that the Aurora would just store enough high density material, like osmium, onboard from which they could source material from for their fabricators? If that’s the case then the supply caches of batteries, food and water we find in game could just be a small stockpile of emergency supplies fabricated and jettisoned just before impact. As for where the high density material would be, it could be theorized that the impact displacement could have been powerful enough that it was picked up and carried into the void which isn’t too far to the right of the crash zone.

While I'm sure The Aroura crashing would be devastating to the eco system, Karra had already destroyed most of the planet and would destroy the rest of it if left uncured. The Architects however, they actually let Karra escape and are the ones who shot down many ships trying to keep it from spreading destroying the planet faster.

I have to heavily disagree with this it’s not the player’s fault it goes back further than that, you forgot to mention a few things. The Aurora would of never crashed if it wasn’t shot down by the “Quarantine Enforcement Platform” made by the what GameTheory called “The Architects” I’m going to call them the “precursors” because that’s what I’m used to saying. Okay anyways the Aurora never would have stopped by planet 4546B the planet subnautica takes place in if the Degasi spacecraft before was never shot down. The Aurora’s primary mission was to construct phase gates, but it’s second was to search for the survivors of the Degasi years earlier similar to how Sunbeam tries to rescue you in the earlier parts of the game. Similar to Sunbeam and the Aurora the Degasi was shot down by Quarantine Enforcement Playform which was made by the precursors. The precursors made the facility to prevent any incoming and outgoing spacecraft from carrying the Kharaa Bacteria outside the planet. So technically it’s the precursor’s fault not the player’s fault also how would the player be at fault for the ship crashing? Technically the Quarantine Enforcement Platforn never would have been activated if the Kharaa bacteria never escaped from the Disease research facility made by the precursors when it was attacked by a sea dragon leviathan and then collapsed to the sea floor. That might make you think that no, it was that leviathan’s fault, but actually no. The precursors took one of the leviathan’s eggs and then leviathan was trying to get it back and ended up realizing the bacteria, forcing the precursors to activate the Quarantine Enforcement Platform leading to the events seen in the game. Sorry if that was a long one.

Matt... As someone who actually played the game, I can say that so much of this was wrong. - Aurora was shot down by the Architect quarantine laser platform and the captain still had some control of the ship, slowing it down enough to not hit as hard - all crafted things in the game were made specifically out of the surrounding flora/fauna, leaving it to be fully biodegradable - batteries and the reactor core were all well contained enough to not leak as much as you said - nutrient blocks had no packaging whatsoever, and Alterra is kinda bad when it comes to treating its employees so not as many nutrient blocks were made - the Kharaa virus was cured by the player, making the second game possible - the alien creatures living there already may have been immune to the radiation poisoning, like the Reaper Leviathans swimming around and the Biters + Crabs waltzing and swimming within

My all-time favorite game gets a theory, and it's a ill-prepared one on the initial events of the game. (Mild spoilers for both games) It's not how Margarite survived the kraa, or if the frozen leviathan can escape, or whether the sea dragons will go extinct because the aurora crash ruined their path to the surface. You could talk about ALAN, and collective consciousness, or how the emperor can produce enzymes, or whether a sea dragon could really break a progenitor (architect) structure. You could talk about whether there is a Gargantuan Leviathan in the void, or how the creatures got their "arctic" variations, how the stalker line evolved differently in the different environments, how the Emperor can use telepathy to talk to you, etc. There is so much theory-worthy material on 4546B, you don't need to answer questions that nobody asked. No hate, I love your channel, but please, *please*, do a video on Subnautica that's more of a theory and less of you trying to fit your Collab. I support TeamSeas, but do a theory on Raft and global warming, or something else that is more comparable.

Marguerite surviving the kharaa is actually lore worthy as the disease killed the architects, almost all wildlife on the planet and maybe the frozen leviathan and I'm not just gonna go out here and say that the emperor making enzyme or ALAN being a being that is 1,000,000s of times advanced than us isn't worthy of being lore. The point that I'm getting at is that the leviathans, the Architects, sea dragon are all worthy of being lore because of their terms of power and size. The fact that the sea dragon could break something that is fully attached to the ground is very impressive and a creature that produce enzymes that can cure the most deadly disease in the universe is phenomenal as hyper advanced aliens couldn't solve it themself.

MatPat, Here's the thing, the player did not ask to be stranded on the ocean planet. The ship was shot down by the planet's enforcer. Players know this because of the Sunbeam. Life was taking a turn for the worst already on the planet. The Aurora was unlucky to cross into someone's quarantine zone. How did the player know. Radioactive material was already on the planet. Now I don’t know a lot about the science behind this but I have played Subnautica. Now first off the bottles are metal not plastic. And our character didn’t solve the Kharaa virus the aliens actually did they couldn’t communicate with the sea emperor the one able to give the recipe for the hatching enzymes in order to hatch the sea emperors eggs. The emperor also mentions that the architects hurt it in some way and after not being able to communicate actually stopped trying because it held a grudge on them and refused to help them. The architects set up the peeper system to heal the wildlife to keep the planet alive. The Aurora wasn’t the first ship to crash land on the planet. And they didn’t crash on purpose because the architect laser made them due to the quarantine on the planet. And the area that you play in is actually a volcano and is a crater. It is clear that is isolated from the other parts of the planet and their ecosystems. And even though companies don’t have a good track record with caring for the environment the company that made the Aurora is designed for space travel and exploration you don’t hear any lore about other planets they have visited but I am sure with all that they have made they have learned how to affect the planet in the most little way possible even if their ships land and leak radiation everywhere. This is a Sci-fi game don’t critique it on the tech we have today. If you want to hear a good critic on this game and the flaws that it has I would recommend to watch Joseph Anderson’s critique on it. Because he at least went a little deeper into the lore of the game before giving it a critique like this.

little right little wrong, the Emperor actually specifies she couldn't communicate with the Architects (likely due to their bodies not being organic like ours and thus their consciousnesses not being within her reach telepathically) and they were unable to force the incubation, They never hurt the Emperor but also didn't actively help the situation either. The peeper system also was NOT done by the Architects, the system the peepers use is for water cycling like for air and the like the peepers which are within game lore rather smart actually, just realized they could also use the system and the emperor used them to spread what little help it could.

On thing, Mat: a terrestrial boat doesn't usually have an ocean entry speed in excess of mach 1. It's entirely possible that the Aurora skipped across the surface of the water (owing in part to the fact that, according to the lore, the ship's captain was still alive and driving until the end) and only then ended up landing in the raised, volcanic crater we all know and love. Alternatively, if the cutscenes/trailers are to be taken as gospel, the ship may have traveled for some distance entirely underwater, producing all the effects you describe, excepting the fact it would have been in the "ecological dead zone", and because of the relative incompressibility of water would have little visible effect on the game location, which is an unspecified distance from the theoretical initial point of aquatic entry.

Love you Matt, but I have some holes in your theory/ comments: 1. All of the plastics we find, and things like food and batteries, are store in titanium storage crates. So unless opened by the player on purpose, they shouldn't get out and contaminate the water 2. As the Aurora crashes, when you listen to the Black Box recording, you can hear him say that he's trying a "controlled decent." The obviously doesn't work completely, but it may account for the lack of damage we see to other areas of the map. 3. The entire playable area of Subnautica is called The Crater, since it was a volcano, and now is a caldera, ie how we have a Lava Lakes zone in the world. I think this would stop a lot of damage from spreading outside of the playable area, and especially stop much damage from occurring to the rest of the planet I think the species most at risk is the Ghost Leviathan, the ones that live in the Void specifically. Since they generally eat microorganisms.

The toxic paint referred to at 6:20 or so is because it's used to prevent barnacles and rust from spreading along the surface. On the craft in the game, it's a spacecraft. Rust and barnacles aren't a threat. It just has to avoid rubbing off so there's no cold welding while also reflecting light to prevent the occupants from boiling or freezing to death. I have played this game and I can honestly say that this theory was kind of a swing and a miss in a way, for example: -the ecosystem (proven in the game) is NOT delicate at all. -the ship was shot down by the alien species who ALSO invaded the planet and then tried to save other planets by putting 4546B on lockdown. -the food doesn’t have containers (obvious from the beginning of the game). -the pilot stayed back and guided the ship in order to avoid everything you just said. -there are creatures in the game who are resistant to radiation. -the time this takes place is WAY in the future so most of this may not apply anyways (especially since it’s on an alien planet and it just might not work the same than on Earth. -and finally everything you make in the game is made from material taken straight out of the ocean (and was there before the player except for scrap metal and scan parts) So in other words, I think you should go back and play the whole game, then actually research and not use Earth logic on an alien planet, and try this again. But other than that I do love this channel I just think this one needs a revisit.

Agreed, the ocean is amazing and deserves to be protected. Much of our oceans have yet to be explored, and I wonder what new animals and plants are waiting to be discovered.

First let me say, I love the science you bring to your theories. However, on this one, I wonder if your analysis of the required amount of supplies is accurate. The character you play comes form a society with the technology to synthesize things that they need. You literally build your whole base on this principle. So, what is to say that they can't do the same with food and everything. Now, it is fair to say that we do not see food synthesis in the game, but, remember we left in a life pod perhaps, we just didn't get into the best life pod. The thing doesn't even have a bathroom. (But, let's not go there.) The tool fabricator would be essential in case the pod is damaged, as it is in game. However, it may not have been designed for long life support, as in food and water. With fabrication, the amount of bulk supplies they would need in storage would be considerably less and thus way less trash dumped into the ocean. Sure we were going to colonize, but look at the size of the ship for 157 people. Perhaps, as is common with colonization ships, the ship itself was to be utilized as the habitat and would contain the majority of the starting resources. Having the power and technology to fabricate everything from tools and clothes, to food and water would be a big game changer and require less physical items on board. I am not saying that there isn't any damage being done, but perhaps the futuristic citizens are not as waste full in their tech as we are. I mean, the pod seems to run off alternative energy sources. So, perhaps they have grasped the concept of less is more.

Also, who says they actually use plutonium to power the reaction? They could have engineered a method of fusion, that creates radioactive isotopes, or uses radioactive isotopes that are not plutonium, but let's say radium.

I was thinking the exact thing, even now on the space stations they keep waste to the bare minimum, so I don't believe this kind of pollution will occur..but still bad.

Why did you say they were gonna colonize? if i remember correctly the only reason they went there in the first place is to build a warp gate and search for the surviving members of the degasi if i'm remembering correctly
