This generation is a mystery to me. The 2007-2010 was something that I'd rented several times and thought of it as pretty nice. Great interior room, mostly comfortable. Then I worked locally, not renting a car for years. Then I had a couple of days with the 2017 hatchback and nearly ran out to buy one for myself!

Still looks great today and the 2014 model had even tighter styling and a less funky dash design. Such a shame that the current gen's hideous.
@MotorMaster_StunticonАй бұрын
Yep, they still look great for a car that was designed in 2008. Almost a timeless design and has aged better than most other cars of that era. I don’t think the current Elantra’s polarizing design will age as well as the 2011 one.

My family has owned a 2013 Elantra GLS since 2017 and it’s been pretty reliable with 150000kms on the odo I love the first gear gentle whine when you accelerate the 1.8L I4 !

2:25 Hyundai wasn't hitting homeruns during this era, but it had a really, really good on base percentage. They hit doubles & triples. Definitely scored. But not homeruns. They still had a stigma about reliability.

Yep, unfortunately it’s difficult to shake a reputation of bad reliability, lol.

The sonatas at least with a 2.4 I4 from 2006-2010 are damn near bulletproof too. I got mine off of a used car lot and the only thing I had to fix on it that was major was the compressor for the AC, other than that it runs perfectly. I may get a truck at somepoint but I may end up keeping that car because for a beater it certainly is very reliable and practical.
@MotorMaster_StunticonАй бұрын
Agreed. Yeah the 2006 Sonatas are reliable. I owned a 2006 myself.

It’s funny to me how Hyundai went from making unreliable low quality cars in the 90s, to making some actually good reliable cars in the mid 2000s just for all their new models to be unreliable again in the 2010s to today
@henryd1981Ай бұрын
Hyundai trumpeted the 40 mpg Highway rating, but that number would get revised after Hyundai was caught overstating the fuel mileage numbers. The EPA made them revise their numbers after auditing their data. A class action lawsuit was also filed by consumers that got shafted by Hyundai.

Love this car. I used to rent a few back when I was an Uber driver - the only fault with these was the starter sometimes not coming alive for some reason (known issue on the model). Perfect runabout beater car. On top of a 2009 Genesis that I've owned since new and still drive. My only preference with this Elantra would be to pick a Korean built example over an Alabama one. Not to mention that the engine was pretty low-tech and reliable. No GDI, no turbo. None of the drama of the larger Theta engines that went into the Sonata and caused all sorts of grief. Even now I'd buy a new Elantra for the same reasons - though in case of a new one I'd pick a hybrid.
@MotorMaster_StunticonАй бұрын
Exactly, they had the more reliable engines over the Sonata. Thanks for chiming in.

I don't think I could ever get behind the "Fluidic Sculpture" era of aesthetics, it's just way too bizarre and wonky, but it was certainly very modern at the time. For my money the Mazda "happy face" era was the best looking design language of the early-mid 2010s, even if some didn't appreciate the cheerful looks.
