Bud is right and Tom is wrong. It’s all about money in (FSU, Clemson, ACC, ESPN) and money out (same parties but who loses what amount; and ACC and ESPN lose the most long term if FSU gets out sooner).

Well money and risk assessment… acc will lose everything in worst case scenario and clemson /Fsu lose the court fees in their worst case… a win is on a scale and it favors the schools in the recent courts. 5% maybe a total victory but 60% of a victory for the schools of any kind may still be a death blow for the acc

Doing a rough calculation of expected value, The ACC would start losing money a year after FSU and Clemson leave even with a buyout. That is why they are doing this. The GOR is reduced from 12 to 6 years those six years of added revenue keep them afloat for a little while. FSU/Clem could say three years and the ACC would probably take it.

There is also a material chance ESPN doesn't extend the ACCN contract by Feb 2025, meaning the GoR s done by 2027 and FSU pays the equivalent of a speeding ticket to shut down the ACC. Context is huge here. $70M would get FSU and Clemson to think about it.

@@lucasalvarez9588 that’s fine, but things have changed since then, and the ACC hasn’t been proactive in competing vs other conferences. All contracts have to have a reasonable way of getting out of that contract. If there isn’t one, then it’s more of a hostage situation than a business contract.
@WilliamDeemer
@WilliamDeemer Ай бұрын
@@Scalper10001 everything you say is correct about the ACC dropping the ball. But I’m pretty sure that every university had a whole team of lawyers going over that. I’m all for teams getting out if they don’t want to be there. Just sit down and negotiate a lesser exit fee and some type of reduced penalty for getting out before the contract. I’m sure that Florida State has plenty of money if they have a spot guaranteed in the SEC or Big Ten. Hell, I’d want my team in there too. Just because things have changed recently doesn’t invalidate the contract. Just sit down and crunch numbers and find a figure you can live with and you’re free to go I guess. Whatever happens I just hope that FSU finds a place where they can be happy.

@@TheWorldTurntle well there is a key difference in the situations. Oklahoma and Texas finished out the contract they had with the big 12. Washington and Oregon not positive about this, but I imagine when the league imploded last year there wasn’t much standing in their way to leaving. Now, in this case, unfortunately everybody in the conference is locked in forever to a crappy TV deal negotiated by good old JS. Personally, as a Virginia Tech fan, I’d love for you guys to stay, but truth be told I think every school in the ACC is trying to figure out how they can get in the same neighborhood as the big 10 and, the SEC.

I have to believe that ESPN is at the heart of this. The “look in” for the ESPN/ACC agreement is due for a response by February. All things being equal ESPN “should” say all is good. But with a greater chance of FSU and Clemson leaving even with paying an exit fee, the ACC is not worth what it’s being paid. The risk really lies with ESPN since they are the ones paying the money.

In terms of where FSU can go from the ACC, the timing for them is poor. If they had asked about joining the SEC in 2011 before Missouri joined, it seems like they could have much more easily made the move as a pair with Texas A&M- no long term GOR and maybe a better addition than Missouri. Now the SEC seems to be at a sweet spot in terms of a balance between upper half and lower half teams. They don’t NEED another upper half football program to continue being the best conference on the field (even though FSU would add to their strength long term) and the lower half programs don't want to have to go up against another program that could consistently beat them. So here we are with Vanderbilt, Arkansas, South Carolina, Missouri, Kentucky, Ole Miss and Mississippi State getting SEC payments while a program that is at minimum comparable to those programs is getting substantially less. They are taking the confrontational approach to get out of the GOR sooner while not getting the recognition that they deserve for being a program that could further solidify the SEC's football strength. I wonder what would happen if they accepted the poor decision they made to sign the long term GOR, cut non football expenses to allow them to build wealth that way and then scheduled tougher non conference games (with bigger payouts). Or maybe they have a good enough case against having to fulfill the GOR agreement.

Big fan of the podcast, but this is one of the worst discussions you’ve ever held. It’s perfectly obvious that FSU would settle for a sizable increase that allows them to remain within spending distance of the SEC and Big Ten teams. Instead, we got almost 20 minutes of discussion about the chances of FSU being able to leave the ACC for free and what the sides’ bargaining positions would be based on that. Danny was actually the voice of reason as he alluded to the fact that if FSU gets up to around 65 million per year with the ACC, FSU will take that, particularly if the deal with the ACC ends when the Big Ten and SEC deals go to market.

Although FSU/Clemson are biggest ACC brands and shouldn’t make less than NW/Vandy it think Tom realizes the inner workings of the B1G and knows that the presidents/academia STILL has a huge influence. Though both are great schools they will not take both, they need a prestigious/AAU partner and both SEC and B1G want UNC. Also many B1G schools are hesitant to add a school the way FSU publicly called out its conference. The SEC doesn’t need to add a 2nd SC or FL school and would like to add new markets and bulk up basketball since football is already #1, unfortunately for FSU/Clemson there are smaller football brands that the P2 want over them because of reasons beyond football AT THIS TIME, but COULD CHANGE in future as deals behind closed doors evolve. Both the SEC and B1G want to add UNC as 1st target and want to leave slots open for a team that UNC want to bring with them (UVA, NCST, etc.). Both FSU/Clemson have more leverage if they could persuade UNC to exit with them. I think the B12 rumors from about a month ago and now this ACC renogation of rev sharing shows they do not have the guaranteed spot they assumed prior to P2 and now realize they HAVE MORE VALUE right before B1G and SEC redo their contracts to negotiate then.

To understand why the other ACC schools might take this deal, think about it in terms of insurance. Assuming there is a 5% chance the conference dies, how much would a school like Wake be willing to insure they don't take a 80% hit to revenue. Using last year's numbers ($44 mill/school), the other teams could have each made $38 million and agreed to pay FSU and Clemson $80 mill each. Obviously a ratings based system changes the expected cut to each school, but the lower ratings schools are at the highest risk if the ACC blows up. People insure against many things that are a lower percentage than 5%. The point is that the lawsuit has moved from insuring against a plane crash to insuring against a hospital stay happening in the next year, and enough schools would be willing to at least negotiate at those percentages. P.S. Hope FSU and Clemson never win again. Hail to Pitt!

Because they’re a national university like Texas or Michigan. Granted they suck in football, but they are one of the best basketball schools in the country and they have the academics and infrastructure that conferences as well as that coveted new TV market. Hell I’ve even heard that university of Virginia would be a prime target for the same reason. It’s a hell of a note that two of the worst football schools in the conference would be the most appealing to the big 10 or the SEC. Go figure.

If Clemson and FSU are so starved of funding by the ACC to the point of not being competitive with B1G and SEC programs, they become irrelevant (or at least much less relevant). If the ACC doesn’t have football programs that can compete with the B1G and SEC, it essentially becomes the Big East, AAC, “new” PAC, etc. and its next TV contract will be a fraction of its current deal that paid each school $45 million in 2023. ESPN has likely told the conference as much. It’s in every other ACC school’s best interest to be paid 50% of what Clemson and FSU are so the conference has relevant football programs, because it’s still 400% more than they would get if Clemson and FSU were not in the conference.

Did you… watch the video? Bud lays it out pretty clearly because Tom forced him to. The main goal of the ACC right now is to keep the current structure together for as long as possible. FSU/Clemson finding a way out whether it’s for $0 or a significantly reduced buyout from the originally proposed 570 million spells the end for the conference as that’s almost 40% of your viewership and other valuable brands would look to jump ship as well. The fact that they were open to discuss an unequal revenue sharing plan with FSU/Clemson when the ACC previously told them to kick rocks shows that the conference isn’t as confident about the legal situation as they were previously. FSU/Clemson have gained leverage

@@SurferRC Lol you wanna pretend those wins looked anything like the same team. Beating miamis 3rd string qb by 3pts. That was a skin-of-your-teeth season-save. Commendable, but it’s WHY there was no playoff spot. Not by any measure the same team. Keep your clown emoji for your own squad this year, you need it.

11:34 because the Big 10 doesn't want FSU and the SEC doesn't need FSU.

Delusional about what? Certain school draw eyes win or lose. Teams have tough seasons. If FSU and Clemson are bad in the same season,then even less people are watching the ACC,which exposes the ACC and proves FSU and Clemson correct. ACC should have been protecting it's top brands all along. That is crystal clear. The SEC and the B1G did just that and it paid off in spades.

So you’re saying that FSU needs more money to beat Memphis & being competitive to other G5 schools … The only reason FSU is currently getting the ratings now is everyone is laughing at what of a joke program FSU has become & eventually the viewership goes away once FSU is only winning 2 to 4 games a year consistently
