Phayllos of Kroton, was a runner and a pentathlete from Kroton in Southern Italy from the late sixth and early fifth century. He won three victories at the Pythian games, twice in the pentathlon and once in the stadion. For these achievements he was honoured with a statue at Delphi. The Athenian comedy-writer Aristophanes mentions him twice as a runner, but his biggest talent was the long jump. Once he jumped 55 feet (16.3 m) and because the sandpit was only 50 feet (15.2 m) long, he landed outside the pit. This achievement soon became proverbial. This jump, one of the few from Antiquity of which the exact distance is known, forms an important argument in the discussion whether the Greek long jump was a single or a multiple jump. During the Greco-Persian war Phayllos was the only Greek from Southern Italy who took part in the sea-battle of Salamis (480 BC) with a ship. As he paid the equipment and crew of the ship out of his own pocket, he was clearly a very wealthy man. As a reward for this feat he received a statue on the akropolis of Athens. The inscription on the statue base has been preserved. One century and a half later Alexander the Great sent part of the treasures he had seized in Persia to Kroton in order to honour the only Greek from Magna Graecia who partecipated in the Greco-Persian Wars.

The Olympic games were a wonderful invention of the Greek. Not only they strengthened the unity of people with different social status. The competing aspect gives the human a meaning in his life. Milon from Kroton (Southern Italy), one of the greatest winners of Pagkratio, the ancient Greeks said that his strength was similar to Heracles's. Failos from Kroton, one of the greatest ancient athletes in long jump, it was said that "υπερέβη τα εσκαμμένα", i.e. his jump surpass the pit. Failos he was the only Greek from Southern Italy who partecipated with his ship at the Battle of Salamis against the Persians (480 b.C), for this reason, Kroton, his birth city, was honoured by Alexander the Great, after the Battle of Gaugamela.

@sebâstian turnayev are you asking what country is the successor to the ottoman empire? that's turkey... or are you asking about the Turkish people in Central Asia? they exist but in the same way the Kurds of the middle east do. (in what is now other countries land)

Yes, it’s suggestive of sex between men, which occurred in Ancient Greece. Get over yourself.

Can you make a sequel to this video talking about the olympics during the Roman period and talking about when and how it came to an end as well as similar events across the ancient world

I really wish all the Olypmics of any sort just stayed in one city (probably in Greece) everytime. The waste of money resulting from changing locale is just amazing.

I think the ancient Olympics went something like this: Athens earned medals in rowing, swimming, and other aquatic activities. Sparta dominated weight lifting and boxing. The Corinthians lost at everything. Thebes were winners at equastrian games. Argos cheated at everything. Macedonia set track records. The marathon was anyone's game who wasn't Corinth.

Loved this episode. Also,since you mentioned Cynisca it would be a good idea of mentioning prominent and famous but also underrated women of Ancient Greece throughout all eras even including Cyniscas story and of course not just Sappho or Aspasia. There are many many more.

I know that they are from a much later time than Classical Greece but are from Early Christian Greece you know New Testament in Koine Greek Hypatia Pandrosion-is ambiguous but might be female sources vary
@johng70033 жыл бұрын
@@alsuvarnadvipadanargentum1743 yes Hypatia is one of them despite being in the more Roman and Christian eras. There are also many others before her too,such as: 1)Lasthenia who was a student of Plato and then a philosopher and physician 2)Agnodice probably the first female doctor and a laboring woman (she is debated if she was real or not though) 3)Hydna who she and her father helped quite a lot in the battle of Salamis, 4)Cynane a half sister of Alexander the Great and possibly ( debatable also) a soldier and general in Phillips army 5)Arctic the Cyrenean who was also a philosopher,a female equivalent of Socrates and was teaching philosophy in Athens in the 5th century BC And many many more

I had no idea that there was a Pisa also in Greece. Is it somehow related with Pisa in Italy?
@AndrewStamelakis3 жыл бұрын
@@redsavage5997 no Pisa is a greek village west of Olympia to this day. It is considered a candidate for colonizing the Italian Pisa. But Greek and Etruscans are both candidates. We don't truly know who founded the Italian Pisa
