You might not care about 'insulin resistance' right now, but that's because you don't know it like Dr. Bikman does.
Insulin is associated with many chronic diseases. Do you or someone you love suffer from metabolic syndrome? You probably do. So what causes insulin resistance, and how can we begin to fight these disorders plaguing our society today?
Dr. Bikman believes it's simple: Prioritize protein, fuel with fat, and control carbohydrates. Insulin is the key.
Our bodies use both carbohydrate and fat for energy. This extraordinary ability is called "metabolic flexibility". When we eat too many high carbohydrate foods, insulin spikes. Insulin can then get "stuck" at a high level as we continue to eat poorly. When the body is stuck in this "sugar burning mode" - we can never burn our existing fat for fuel. This causes fat to accumulate, and boom, suddenly you begin to gain weight, your back hurts, and you feel exhausted by 2 p.m. Were those donuts worth it?
Fat has NO effect on insulin levels. When we better control carbohydrates in our diet, our bodies relearn to burn our existing body fat for fuel. THIS is what many of us want.
In order to get our bodies into the "fat burning zone", Dr. Bikman encourages following the Unicity Nutrition Principles: Prioritize Protein, Fuel with Fat, and Control Carbohydrates. Along with a 4-4-12 eating schedule (18:22, you're welcome) these principles help you achieve metabolic flexibility for optimal health.

@@user-dp4bu8jy4b I have no idea because I avoid all doctors. The last time I agreed to see one, because my family kept bugging me, was 6 years ago, and that doctor badly scared me about my blood test, which showed some higher protein level that can indicate blood cancer. I was then sent to an oncologist for more tests. It was a nightmare that ultimately ended when I later took another test with different results. No more doctors or tests for me. If something horrible is going on in me, I'll take my chances. Life has been good.

Thank you Dr. Bikman for this superbly articulated, and very well illustrated, explanation on energy partitioning and how our nutritional intake influences this dynamic. I constantly get questions about low carb diets after people see how much weight I have lost on it. So I am always searching for better ways to explain low carb diets. This presentation is probably one of the most accessible ones I have seen for a newcomer to this concept. You have provided a great service to those of us who seek to introduce this nutritional concept to more and more people. Now, instead of fumbling to find the words and analogies to help convey the mechanisms and efficacy of a low carb diet, I can simply refer people to this video. I greatly appreciate your work.

Drake I did the same thing and lost 70 pounds. But unfortunately those folks that are very overweight are very focused on sugar as processed food are very addictive and those folks are so sick and insulin is so high they can’t stop eating processed food. They tell me its not sustainable. But I love my lifestyle and I love the loss of all the health issues I use to have. Of my life the 3 best things I have ever done was have my son, divorce my husband and switch to a Ketogenic lifestyle. The benefits are huge.

@@monicaambs Congratulations on your weight loss. Like you, the large amount of weight I lost (110 lbs) is one of my greatest achievements. I actually derive more pride from my weight loss achievement than I do from graduating from university or any of the professional accolades I have achieved at work. The discipline it takes to achieve weight loss, and most importantly to sustain it, is arguably greater than most life challenges, because dietary compliance is something, unlike other endeavors, that really requires 24/7 adherence. So it is no wonder that the vast majority of dieters, who do manage to lose weight, fail to keep it off. I can truly empathize with the addictive component to processed carbohydrates and sugars. Its why it took me so long to finally break down and give low carb a serious try over 4 years ago. While we can dispense advice and show people who are suffering from carb addiction very informative presentations like the one Dr. Bikman gives here, ultimately they won't be receptive to these notions until they acknowledge that what they are enduring is very much an addiction that is as potent as alcoholism or drug addiction.

great video, but missing some facts here, the body doesn't store Glucose only as fat, it also stores in liver and muscles as glycogen, glucose is the body's favorite fuel, so before tapping into fat reserve it will start turning glycogen into glucose, the body has the ability to metabolize protein also into glucose via the liver, it is much more complicated than how it is explained here

There is an even more favorite fuel and that is alcohol. You should read "favorite" as what your body wants to burn first. It burns alcohol first because it is damaging the body, then glucose because high glucose is damaging the body. If you eat a proper human diet, very little carbs, you still have a glycogen supply. You can use this in "emergency" but your body crancs up the ketone production soon so you can run on your primary fuel, fat. I would suggest suggest to search Tim Nokes.

@karlhungus5554 Жыл бұрын
I'm not a doctor, so I don't know the issue...but, if I were doing something that caused my blood glucose to average 225-250 daily, I would stop doing it. Personally, I don't believe people need to be "keto" all the time. In my opinion, it's not natural. Or, if you prefer, it's not normal. Sometimes, sure. Anyway, very high glucose level like yours, obviously, is a sign that something is wrong. And, it's serious. I hope you've either figured out the issue or found a different eating plan to follow.

@douglasx6915 4 жыл бұрын
What so many people fail to understand is that there really isn't two fuels when it comes to diet. There is one fuel and that is fat. Exogenous carbohydrates are completely unnecessary. A bolus of carbohydrates is viewed as something toxic by your body because large glucose swings are highly inflammatory to the endothelial lining of your vascular system. Your body is switching to oxidizing glucose because your body views it as a metabolic poison at those concentrations. There is a REASON as to why your body hold blood glucose levels in such a tight range. Of course, certain parts of your body NEED glucose...red blood cells, ovaries/testes, and various part of the brain, but that does NOT mean it should ever be a primary fuel source. This is amply supplied by the liver through gluconeogensis. High consumption of carbohydrates is similar to the consumption of alcohol. You body preferentially oxidizes both, not because it's healthy but because your body is attempting to protect itself from the deleterious effects of both. There is a simple reason as to why SO many people find ketogenic diets incredibly healthful, because this is the correct metabolic status for humans. There is NO debate that a high carbohydrate diet creates a tremendous amount of oxidative stress. When those are removed, the body functions properly.

I agree. There is no need for carbs at any meal. That is the way I live my life. I have that luxury, being a single man. However, I believe Dr. Bikman was being pragmatic to illustrate this way of eating for those who have more social obligations. So for someone with a family, like he has, sometimes it is not feasible to eat differently than his kids. So if his kids are metabolically healthy, and prefers to consume carb laden foods as most kids do, in order to foster a sense of harmony at the dinner table Dr. Bikman will eat like his kids. However, he gets the majority of the benefit of lower insulin anyway, because he eats mostly fat and protein throughout the day and doesn't snack in between. He is simply illustrating a way to balance the strictures of this way of eating, while not unduly inconveniencing those close to him.
