Low Carb Down Under

Күн бұрын

This lecture is part 2 of 3 delivered by Dr Mason at the Low Carb Down Under Gold Coast conference in October 2022. Dr Mason exposes the catastrophic harms caused by the first cholesterol lowering drug, Triparanol, and the guilty verdict that followed.
This is followed by a brief history of statins, including the high rates of cancer in test animals seen with the first statin to come to market, and the massive (+$1,000,000,000) legal payouts made to settle lawsuits from statin side effects.
Specific statin side effects, including dementia are covered, followed by a close analysis of the measurable benefits that may be attributed to statins. This includes a review of a recent paper co-authored by David Diamond, Ben Bikman and Paul Mason that discusses how to identify who is likely and not likely to benefit from statin therapy using triglyceride and LDL levels.

Dr Paul Mason obtained his medical degree with honours from the University of Sydney. He is also a fellow of the Australasian College of Sports and Exercise Physicians, holds a Bachelor's degree in Physiotherapy and a Masters degree in Occupational Health. He is currently Chief Medical Officer of the Defeat Diabetes program, an evidence-based program focussed on lifestyle management of metabolic illnesses, including type 2 diabetes.

Years ago I told my doctor that I lost my job so I wasn't going to refill my statin prescription. They were expensive and that cost came directly out of my unemployed pocket. He heartlessly said *_"Well if you're not going to take your statins, I'm not going to be your doctor."_* Wow! I left without another word and never saw him again.

This is either a pure ideologist or someone getting kickbacks from the statin people. Really you don’t want a doctor like that anyway. For those of us with little choice and have to keep those doctors due to insurance details I would suggest you make a big show of contriteness and beg him not to fire YOU though you employ him and tell them you can’t afford expensive statins and if the have a free or very cheap one you will take it and make always like you are BUT DONT. He has no way to know and he’ll leave you alone. At some point maybe start to complain about muscle pain and other negative effects of Statins every time you see him as if it’s worsening. Make sure he documents this in his notes and say I want this documented because I am afraid what’s happening to me will get much worse. Throw your little actor inside into this presentation and eventually he’ll take you off or you can justify why you stopped. Keep your own notes of dates & times when you told him this. THE DOCUMENTATION IS EVERYTHING. And you will win this fascist war. P.S. my father died from interstitial lung disease which is one of the bad side effects of statins. Google Interstitial Lung disease and statins and read about it for yourself. Nothing like this was ever in my family before.

However, I developed night terrors and I would wake up some nights finding myself walking around the bedroom. Took me months to connect the dots as at that time it wasn't a known side-effect. I still have high total cholesterol but very good triglycerides so I take nothing

In 2012 I was a very athletic health person 58 no medication. My doctor recommended a statin. My first question - can I just change my Diets? He smiled and said “you mean eat nuts and berries “ Shortly after raking the Statins I became horribly I’ll with symmetrical joint pain, difficulty working getting out of bed etc. My doctor said “we don’t know the cause” I demanded tests Lyme disease etc. Then I googled Statins Side Effects. That was the plan of big pharma and the medical industry all along. Why do you think they started building alzheimer units at all the nursing homesyears ago. They knew they would have plenty of people to fill them. I have tried to warn people for years that when you reduce all the cholesterol in your body especially your brain you will develop dementia and they thought I was crazy. I read it in a book from the doctors who worked at a famous spa for the very rich. They casually mentioned in the book how important cholesterol was and never to take statins if you want a healthy brain. That was twenty years ago.

It is because they keep lowering the "thresh hold" of what normal cholesterol levels should be when they need more "customers" for whatever new statin drug they developed. Every cell in your body needs cholesterol. We're all just their guinea pigs. I will only go to a Dr on an urgent care basis if I break a bone or need stitches because of big Pharma peddling their crap and Doctors having to follow the protocol or lose their license. All we really have to do is look at our President in the US to see what prolonged statin use will do to you. It's on daily display.

When I read your comment that you are a Type 1 diabetic. I felt I needed to tell you a story. You may already know this and are doing it. A friend of mine has Type 1 diabetes he'd had it had it for decades and was doing what the doctor told him to do a high carb low fat diet and he was on about 4-5 insulin injection a day and he's levels were all over the place he could do the same thing each day and one day his levels could be 2 the next day could be 18. I saw a video on KZbin by Dr Troy Stapleton who diagnosed himself with Type 1 diabetes and he did everything his specialist told him a high carb low fat diet and his blood sugar levels were all over the place like being on a roller-coaster. He read books from the early 1900s which said low carb high fat diet and he tried it, his blood sugar levels went to near perfect. I showed his video on KZbin to my friend and he showed his doctor and he said give it a go, he went from 4-5 insulin injection a day to one in a weeks and he's still on the same diet which is basically a Keto diet now for over 5 years and all those years he's never looked and felt better. I just don't know why they recommend a high carb diet when carbs just turn to sugar which means you need more insulin injection. Maybe it so they can make more money.

I"m a M.D. with a specialty in Internal Medicine, Geriatrics and Obesity Medicine. If you are 65 years old and above and on a Medicare advantage plan insurance, I can assure you that your doctor will push STATINS in your throat. Here in the USA, the CMS (center for Medicare service) puts out a scoring system called HEDIS (HEALTH EFFECTIVENESS DATA AND INFORMATION SET) and 1 of the measure is putting patients with diabetes, atherosclerosis, heart disease or any of its heart disease equivalents, on statins. Their target is 80% of those patients should be on statins and the doctor/clinic/ health group companies gets a 5 star rating if 80% is reached which equates to more $$ reimbursement from CMS ( a government entity governing medicare). Therfore, medical groups, health care groups are pushing the doctors to write more statins. Doctos like me get a score card, like a school report card with all the scores on the HEDIS METRICS. In fact, I got a shout out from our medical director that I have the lowest score on statin prescription and that I should improve my statin star rating to bring in more money for the company I work for (OPTUM).It behooves me to think against my ethical principles. I discuss the pros and cons of statins with my patients and discus with them the NNT of these statins for primary and secondary prevention and then I let the patient decide. If the patient decides against it, then I dont give statins and I document it in the medical records. In fact I also add journal citations in my notes for other doctors in my group to see and perhaps explore. Hence, my low statin HEDIS score metric. I will stick to my conviction of informed consent with the patients. I think this is the best ethical way to practice medicine. Dr Mason I hope you will be at the Low carb conference in Denver in Feb 2023.

I watched a video some years ago on N how medical associations destroyed the medicine profession because in the past, people could make their own associations to pay for medical care, but they had the power on medics, so they went on government so it granted them the power of cancel any medic license that agreed to work for them, an also making mor difficult to students to graduate so they imposed mor years and training, so they could manta in a medic shortage. This was the beginning of all this corruption.

My cholesterol came back recently as an astronomical 210 (just joking), and my doctor wanted to write me a prescription for a statin. She showed me a computer program with my data entered. It showed that if I took this statin, my 10 year chance of a heart attack would be reduced from 8% to 7%. I later found a study showing that if your risk of heart disease is less than 10%, statins are worthless. I also read that 20% of those who take statins end up stopping them because the side effects are unacceptable.

He became quite unwell over time culminating in liver cancer which came as a complete shock to us. He blamed his ills on statins. The irony it was given because he'd had a very successful bypass some 20 years earlier. His cholesterol wasn't elevated. My GP practice has a 'practice pharmacist'. Never even thought the debilitating pain I had been experiencing for over a year had anything to do with the statin. I thought it was just "old age" and that my mild arthritis was getting worse. But once I stopped, the pain decreased dramatically, in both my heel and neck, at the same time. And now I have no chronic pain anymore. I stopped sugar and bad carbs completely and can now confidently turn down statins. I prefer quality of life over quantity, and when it’s my time to go, God will be in control. Thank you Dr, for keeping me from making a terrible mistake.

Too right about the inflammatory seed oils. They also contain defence chemicals which releases toxic aldehydes. They are rife in the industrial food industry and includes things like mayonnaise, dressings, dips. Oxysterols are found in dehydrated oxidised dried fish, egg, cheese powders. Oxysterols all emanate from the polyunsaturated fat components. Avoiding rubbish animal fed meats of soy corn grains etc; especially 🐖 and 🐔 who store these highly unsaturated fatty acids in their fat tissues. Ruminant animals like cows on the other hand can at least convert LA to CLA. Primarily grass-fed meat is best, but limited grain-fed beef is ok though. Blood sugars are a serious problem, but the main culprit i believe are the high pufa food consumption increase over the generations These free fatty acids complete against glucose for cellular oxidation thus contributing to the metabolic disease syndrome as the body is unable to efficiently oxidise glucose. Scientifically this is called the Randle Cycle effect..anyhow just my 2 bobs worth. Refs: Fred Kummerow (lipids scientist) Raymond Peat PhD (biologist)

Every MD had the bad fortune to pay for their limited knowledge of having a endocrine tumor wanted to prescribe statins to stop the blood pressure spikes. I have been thrown out of doctors offices because I refused statins. Finally found a doc who is 60 years old and struggles with our healthcare professionals. His nurse said, you are the only patient I have had in the last 5 years who takes absolutely no meds ..how frightening!!!!

My cholesterol is high and my doctor said to me “you can go on statins but I know how you don’t like to take drugs”. She also said the ratio between my HDL and LDL’s were still in a good range so it was my choice. She’s awesome. I refuse to ever go on statins and instead changed my eating habits. I lowered my fat intake and also my carb intake; lost 20 lbs and exercise regularly. I haven’t had my blood tested yet but I’m expecting it to be better.

I'm so thankful to Paul Mason and many others in the low carb space who gave me enough of a warning to refuse a statin when my doctor wanted to put me on one. I've since gone back and learned as much as I could about the damned things and have thankfully confirmed my decision was 110% correct. I will never, ever take a statin. Their only positive benefit appears to be due to an anti-inflammatory effect, since the systems of those who have had heart attacks or strokes or TIAs in my personal case are by definition highly inflamed. But the cost associated with this benefit is in no way worth it, and there are 100 other anti-inflammatory medications.

Hubby had a wellness check 20 years ago. Except for cholesterol, perfect. He was on no meds. Doc put him on a statin. Three months later, a massive hemorrhagic stroke, which he miraculously survived. His mentality dropped him to a 4 year old, and bilateral right-sided hemianopsia. 3 weeks later, follow-up labs. I received a call to double his statin. I did, and the next morning, another hemorrhagic stroke. Two craniotomies and evacuations in 3 weeks! When his doc tells me his cholesterol is high, I smile and say, "good." His last PCP fired us for refusing Crestor and the j@b.

I had never heard of statins until my last checkup, where my doctor recommended taking them as I was at an elevated risk of heart disease. I checked my cholesterol levels and they were normal. So I asked why, and she sent me a blurb about eating better (I'm not "overweight" my BMI hovers around 25. So I looked up a calculator and sure enough it said I was a risk. That's when I felt like something was fishy and started seeing videos like this. Zero chance I take a statin.

I just posted this on your other video about statins: "After I had Covid, I started having TIAs. Dr. put me on Atorvastin. I always vowed never to take a statin but he carried on I would 'die' without it. I had gotten very weak I used to be a trail runner but now I could hardly walk a few feet without pain, weakness and fatigue. I researched and took myself off of it. My doctor also put me on a BP med with a diuretic. My muscles began burning, not just legs but arms. Lab work revealed I was now in renal failure because of the diuretic in the BP med. It's amazing how the ER doctors and others I've since seen have said It's good I took myself off the statin and why was I on this particular BP med, that most seem to know the dangers but just prescribe anyway and if the patient says nothing all the better. I would hear "Well, as we age..." Like it's expected the first pain or weakness, find yourself a rocker or lazyboy and sit til you die. I'm not having any of that." It's very upsetting how they dole out harmful drugs. And the first thing offered before even speaking to you is "Want some happy pills?" Yes, Ive found a new doctor.

Wow, absolutely awesome presentation. over the past 20 years, years I've been tested, my triglycerides have ranged between 600-1200. That is not a typo, nor is it based on any esoteric scale. Base on my own readings the past 20 years, I have always refused to take Statins. It seems to me Statins have a greater risk of damaging/killing me than triglycerides. No one makes it out the end, we all die. No point in paying pharma to hasten the final event. I am a compulsive investigator. I made my own mind up years ago. I do not accept the results of studies that are not released with the complete background information and methodology. I did not need Dr Mason to convince me, BUT, I absolutely enjoyed listening to the entire presentation.

Yes I see relatively young people with low cvd risk on statins coming in for their cholesterol results and I usually inwardly groan and tell patients it’s a difficult area ! Eg I saw someone recently and had to say that if I’d seen them when they had their blood test a year or so earlier and then got started on a statin that’d I’d not have done the same, as the likley hood of benefit is v small . Puts me in a difficult situation sometimes as it puts me ad odds with medical advice they had before. Also I groan when young fit people ask for cholesterol tests. Thanks Paul you give me lots of ammo to point patients towards so that they can become better informed about whether to take a statin for the next 40 years , or not !

And something that needs to be talked about is how statins in comination with certain other drugs increases the risk. For instance statins and steroids (MS patients take a lot of prednisone as do IBS, etc, so do people with psoriasis who do occlusive drsgs with topical steroids and absorb huge amounts over years)and drugs like Protonix and Tagamet also contribute to myopathies. Doctors need to care more for their patients well being and less about Big Pharm profits.

Kidding but the more I listen to these physicians from various parts of the World that clarify and explain what I have felt for 20 yrs-that why, if all my other markers were great, the focus is on the perceived boogeyman LDL. I succumbed to taking one starting a year ago. Thanks to my sister, I told my MD I would only take the lowest dosage 3 times a week. I am now stopping as of this last week. I am 74 with much longevity in my family and am an avid workout person so I am willing to be a maverick and ask for more in-depth tests like the LDL-size one or the calcium score. I just don't believe in messing with the body's greater plan for all the components it utilizes. I have always eaten clean. My risk to monitor.
