Amazon's new series 'The Boys' is an irreverent superhero pastiche, a virile abrasive attack at the role superheroes play in our current culture. Did somebody say Watchmen?! V for Vendetta?! Marshal Law!? With regular instalments of Hollywood superhero films, the popularity of Marvel and the MCU, DC and the DCEU, this is the perfect time to release a show like this. Vought Parodies The Justice League with characters that homage to Aquaman (The Deep), Superman (Homelander), Batman (Black Noir), The Flash (A-Train) and Wonder Woman (Queen Maeve). But does it meet the standards of the media that has proceeded it or did The Boys do us dirty? The answer is yes. To both of them. Find out why in this video with me.

I get your point about what happened to Lost happening to The Boys, but the thing about that show is that they didn't have source material. The writers were basically shitting out stories every year without really knowing where any of it was going. The Boys however has 70+ comic book issues to go through.

Butcher calling Homelander a "Saint" was him referring to his public image. Homelander's been able to cover up pretty much every scandal and mistake he's ever been responsible for, and he's done so much more thoroughly than pretty much every other superhero in this world. To the public, Homelander is a saint. Obviously, Butcher *knows* Homelander isn't like that, but his point is that it's gonna be really hard to publicly oppose Homelander when they don't have any evidence of him not being the godlike figure the people worship.

Exactly this. Also it was there telling the audience about his public perception too. I know this is Nitpix, but very nit picky. Cliffhangers are fine, knowing about some of the stories from the comic, I cant wait to see what they do. I think Amazon are more committed to TV shows Netflix usually scrap them after a couple of seasons. So I have hope, Ideally I think it can run for 4 seasons without getting stale.

They are all Saints in public eyes. Butcher didn't reveal it because of lazy writing and the fact that you weren't suppose to know that until he shots that plane. Its the same reason why he isn't there when Starlight gives BJ to Deep even though in the comics Homelander initiates that scene and she blows him, Black Noir and A Train and why they have a scene where he presents himself as Saint with "I wanna hear how much people you saved today". My point is, stop giving Hollywood lazy writing excuses. Its because idiots like that we get lazy stories. Because even when it happens you people find even lazier excuses for it.

The point of Hughie not killing A-Train when he had the chance was he got over revenge. He'd stopped having anxiety attacks, his relationship with his father was better, he wasn't hallucinating Robin and Starlight was his new love. The issue is he doesn't have a moment where he goes from wanting A-Train dead to being indifferent about him which is a big change in his character that happens off-screen.

I don't necessarily agree that The Boys "did us dirty." I don't think the cliffhanger was the best, but it left me interested to see where season 2 goes. You gotta remember for every Lost, there's a Breaking Bad or Twin Peaks that beautifully masters the art of the cliffhanger. And Twin Peaks fans had to wait 25 years just to get a resolution after season 2, so I don't wanna hear shit about "having to wait" lol.
@SynsityGW

But that's the whole point. It's meant to bring you into season 2. And season 2 is meant to bring you into season 3. And so on. Truly great shows don't do this. They give you a great story and assume you will simply continue following because you trust there will be more good times to come. A show feeling the need to end on a cliffhanger is like a really insecure person, it's just extremely off-putting. You can just feel it dripping with desperation. In place of what would normally give you the good feelings, all you feel instead is like someone is trying to manipulate you.

... but the boys tells a complete three act story? Hughie's first act is wanting revenge, second act starts when he kills translucent, third act starts when he prioritizes his friends over revenge. Very obvious three act structure for our pov character (aka usually the protagonist) with a very clear story/moral. Revenge is good and all, be angry and don't just accept it like the collateral damage support group does, but also don't let yourself be blinded by it like Butcher is. Butcher's arc is left as a cliffhanger to ensure people will watch, but he is also clearly meant to end the season at his lowest point in contrast to Hughie. He made the wrong choice and so everything he wanted is denied and everything he thought was true turns out to be false. The afterlife imagery of him waking up isn't subtle, Butcher metaphorically dies without getting revenge by choosing to try and get revenge rather than save his friends.

Freddie Kruger the series is going in a different direction than the comics did and the events of the comics are happening in a different order altogether or they’re cutting what happened out to make it a more streamlined and focused story. I dunno, I got sucked into the show but at the same time I was kind of let down with the lack of character development/ time spent getting attached to each character, and some of the subplots such as the home lander “mother” infatuation type deal, I dunno how to describe it.

Then hughie becomes insufferable and their relationship just collapses because he's Not sure how to process or empathize with her. By that point in the story, he's absorbed alot of butchers prejudices. They changed a lot of stuff for the sake of drama I personally wasn't very happy with their take on him killing his first supe In the comic it was a complete accident out of desperation Not because of PTSD or whatever. Not to mention stripping away all of butchers nuance where in issue 2 I believe it's revealed that he is friends with former supe love sausage and believes that at least once every blue moon they can get over themselves and switching him from a law adjacent to an outright vindictive criminal from the start but then also his reasons for becoming like that were stripped down to the point where it doesn't make sense like it does in the comic where he sees his wife die and knows for a fact it's because she was raped by homelander and is forced to beat a infant to death. in this one his wife just disappears after cheating on him. Why does she never contact her sister? speaking of homelander I feel like they removed a lot from his character whereas as in the comic he's a dick along with being evil which humanizes him and in this he's just perfect evil. also not sure what the point of the baby was in the show. also they keep referencing the dog without showing it outside of a flashback and I hope they don't kill it off The added a lot of fun interesting stuff but changed a lot unnecessarily

It's like he's never binge watched anything; they always flow into the next season. Besides, the conclusion of this season was clear; Butcher's mystery being unravelled, Hughie freeing himself of his toxic need for vengeance (and all of the negative things that it was doing to his life, to his relationships) and Homelander starting to find a real path in life, of his own creation for the very first time. Becoming a father, after being torn for so long about how damaging his upbringing was; a chance to give what he wasn't given, and provide him with some much wanted fulfillment. Also he became a true villain, creating superpowered foes to terrorise others for fun, publicity and keeping the company that he has a stake in free from governmental intervention, and finally slaughtering Elizabeth Shue and releasing himself from her control, overcoming the powerlessness he had before her for the entire season.

It would've been a great place to end season 1 too with how volume 4 ended. But i still love the show and think it's great in its own way. I definitely prefer this smaller version over the comics tbh. Focusing on The 7 helps make the supes feel more godly and the fight more personal. When they killed Transparent, it felt like they acomplished something incredible unlike the comics where supes are falling left and right. I also prefer how the show didn't make the Boys superhuman. Makes their struggle a lot more tense and desperate as the slightest mistake could, and very nearly did several times, get them killed. Have you heard of a cliffhanger season finale? Season one isn't the story. It's the first act. Take any other Show, let's say Game of Thrones, Season One ends... Ned is dead, Robb is off to a reluctant war, Arya is escaping, Sansa is captured, Dany has lost everyone but has dragons. Bran's doing fucking nothing. They're all set ups. What you want is a neat closed-arc story all in one season. If a show did that with each individual season the overall narrative would suffer. Some shows do, but it's a preference thing as to whether you prefer that or not. This really isn't a 'The Boys' thing.
@Awsmjames
@Awsmjames 5 жыл бұрын
There's nothing wrong with a cliffhanger as long as there is some sort of finality with it. Even using your example, sure Game of Thrones season one left a lot of things up in air but Ned did die thus ending his story arc and setting up future stories. Imagine if instead the season just ended right before he was about to be killed and we had to wait until the next season to find out if he lives or dies and for the new stories to get going.
@PurpleBadger

@@Awsmjames Y'mean like how Season 5 ended? It happens often. It can be really good for building up buzz around your franchise and theory-crafting. The same kind of goes for Movies. Last Jedi had a pretty decisive ending to the point there will be a time skip because, everything's wrapped up. Expectations subverted. But... No one cares. No one is theorycrafting, Star Wars is struggling... Infinity War ended with everyone vanishing and no fall out, no time to see where the characters were emotionally. Everyone was hyped for Endgame, though. It's not a case of the ending itself that causes a lack of momentum, it's simply how good the story writing is.

Bc Garth Ennis is a master of taking the typical hero and making them funny and emotionally deep. And the show being true to that character ideal was essential. All the major counterparts in the comic are similar in thay regard (with a few exceptions like A Train), and even more intriguing in a lot of ways than the show; which makes them a bit more realistic for tv audiences as opposed to more over the top in the comic is that for comic audience sensibilities

I completely agree, in fact this is exactly what I said to my brother after watching it and him asking if it was worth it "yeah it's really good, but there's no real conclusion and they're just playing a season two." this is a trend shows should stop. Peaky blinders did it with their most recent season. The conclusion was a fake out and thus the bad guy is still alive and we have to see the next season. You can look at this two ways, and it's up to you how you like it. LOTR was shot as 3 films, each with structure of a regular film, but are really part of the same story. You can't watch the second one if you haven't seen the first. The same plays for the boys and the next season if peaky blinders. Or you can look at something like how to train a dragon trilogy. Each is their own, but you don't really need to know too much about the first one to enjoy the second. This is more in the vain if peaky blinders earlier seasons. Like season 4 was essentially completely self contained taking the show back to small heath and all you needed to know was changretta had grace killed, Tommy had changretta killed and now luca changretta is after them. That's about it. And at the end of the season we have a satisfactory conclusion with our big bad dying and our characters coming together and moving along their arcs. This formula is predictable after 4 seasons so it's good tommy doesn't get his way abd our big bad might just be better than him. However as a first season to leave us with no satisfactory ending, no cathartic release and no real on edge cliff hanger wtf is the point of ending the season. Nut the fuck up and make a season with 16 episodes if season one and two are the exact same story.

The choice to end without a "satisfying" ending is completely true to the show. Every single superhero movie has the same structure. The hero has some dark moment but then saves the day just in time for some mid credit scenes. Leaving this open ended, not knowing where this is going or if The Boys are going to succeed is kind of how life works. I like the throw back to a cliffhanger. We don't need to be spoon fed a happy ending every fucking time.

I read this excellent article by Gerry Canavan about the MCU that speaks to a universal problem with media that refuses to craft a complete narrative:”The only logic that finally governs significance in the MCU - the only guideline we have to tell us which events ‘actually matter’ and which don’t - is entirely extra-textual: whose contracts are up, and whose sequels have been green-lit.... MCU films are not about characters, choices, consequences; they are only ever about the permanent extension of the MCU itself as a franchise. Why does supervillain Thanos attack Earth? Because the post-credit sequence of The Avengers (2012) said he would. Why does he attack Earth now? Because the contracts of the original cast are nearly up. Why can’t the good guys stop him? Because there’s a sequel already in production.“

I'd say Umbrella Academy left me feeling that the series was cut off early, more than The Boys. It was some cheesy "Here we go again", with barely anything tied up. There was no pay off to making it through to the last episode. There's a measure of being spoiled to "I loved it up to the end, but there wasn't enough, so it's ruined". I'd rather appreciate that there is a series out there that entertains me without forcing a hook. The Boys ended in a way that makes me want to continue the story. It didn't feel manufactured, or forced, like one of those scenes that get immediately resolved in the first episode of the next season. We're hurtling toward the deathly MacGuffin! (Season two ends). (Season three begins) "I flipped the don't die switch, on with the plot!"

Ending a TV series on a cliffhanger is a very common trope. Just because it wasn't the ending you expected doesn't make it bad. I get that cliffhangers can be annoying but I loved how it ended and what the possibilities are for dramatic narrative for the next season. The only thing I'm frustrated with is having to wait another year to see what happens. Also it means that character arcs can play out over several seasons. We have become used to binging shows like movies. One season = one movie. Just because this show decided to stick to more traditional tv tropes isn't a bad thing

I couldn't agree more. You can end a season on a victory or a loss. But the show just feels like it ran out of episodes rather than coming to a natural conclusion. Obviously, the show will continue, but if each season of a tv show is like a chapter in a book, it feels more like stopping mid-chapter. They could have stopped earlier or gone farther. And honestly, maybe a condensed mini-series would have worked better. I have been wondering what any of the characters really want to do for the last half of the season.

I thoroughly enjoyed the 3 seasons of The Boys currently available and, as rarely as I say this, I found it more entertaining and gripping than the source material. Both have their strong and weak points, but insofar as adaptations of comic books go, the creators altered and adapted things in such a way as to make it translate better to the medium of (bingeable) television. This is like starting the entire Star Wars franchise on Empire Strikes Back. Yes, it's the best in the original trilogy, but it ended on a bittersweet note so as to differentiate from the happier note of New Hope's finale. The Boys is a dark/grey themed show, but I think a first season of any series should leave people wanting to seeing some kind of fullfilled note with successes and failures. As well as a thread or two left ambiguous or unresolved to keep the audience wondering about what's next. A peak before a valley, and breaking that tradition, isn't revolutionary. Just very risky and the payoff may or may not workout in the end.

It's called a cliffhanger! one of the most common ways to end a season until very recently and a genre staple of comic books... Sure a bit old school but I think it's refreshing not to have everything all wrapped up in a little bow. I thought it was framed beautifully, and I could picture it as a big comic panel. Just because you binge a TV series like you're watching an 8-hour movie doesn't mean it's obliged to be structured with a clear resolution as though it were actually a movie. I actually prefer something more ambiguous that leaves the future more uncertain. Think of how many seasons of some great series like Breaking Bad ended seasons like that.

@@DarranKern Why did Becca really leave Billy, is it simply because she was pregnant with Homelander's Son? Why did Homelander hide his son if he's got superpowers? If superpowers can be passed down how are their so few heroes? How much control do the seven have over society as whole if they can keep their family life secret? If Billy really does hate Homelander why did he defend him when talking to Hughie? Why would Hughie spare A-Train if it's his sole motivation for joining the boys? [I know this one was answered later but it was a serious question for that episode] What happened with the prison break? Who actually got out? What happened to the ones that didn't? Why did Mother's Milk initially leave the Boys? This shit goes on and on and I know it's meant to keep me on pins and needles for the second season but I'm just so sick of this tactic of not telling a full story that I won't be coming back.

@@dondoesdoodles9726 the idea that an ending like this will keep people on pins and needles for an entire year is a horrifically stupid strategy. I really wish it would stop too.
