Dubai, fuelled by the wealth that comes with being a major oil hub, has grown by close to 600% in population in the last 30 years. The modern-day metropolis version of Dubai is a water-side city on the edge of the desert, full of iconic architecture and massive construction undertakings.

Dubai is a soulless city. It's the Las Vegas of the Middle East, it's enjoyable to visit once and only if you have money to spend. I wouldn't want to live there even if I was rich. I'd rather live in Turkey instead for example. So much history behind the country, very culturally rich, and not to mention the beautiful cities and views. Dubai is so overrated.

Tall buildings are eye catching but not ver practical in my view. If I had the where with all to invest in something unique I would, instead, design a new city in a desert clime somewhere. It would be a domed structure reaching a height of just under ten thousand feet high. Within it would be an entire city, self contained, managed in a very disciplined way. No automobiles allowed. No homeless allowed. No illegal drugs allowed. Controlled underground access via high speed rail ftrom trusted, well established ports of departure. Politics? None. No conflict between "left" and "right" nor any conflicts of interest between any religions. The idea would be to move away from the traditional human settlement andd into something entirely new. It would be a design model and testing platform for future cities on other planets. Tall structures, when slender, are interesting from an engineering scholastic point of view but they are impractical. Consider all the time and money invested for a very limited amount of floor space. Consider also the load per sq meter on the base. A dome structure is very light in this respect. It almost floats on it's base no matter the material. And wind resistance? A dome, properly made of appropriate material, can withstand the strongest winds ever recorded on our planet. Domes make a lot more sense than any tall building on a small base.
