I thought the final season was incredibly profound, and had a lot of moments that will stick with me for a long time. Over all I enjoyed the hell out of it, but I do agree that they introduced too many plotlines. They should've either cut some, or done 10-12 episodes to properly resolve every storyline in a more satisfying way.
@matthew3078 Жыл бұрын
The biggest issue with the show this season (and kind of already in season 3 IMO) is that it is overstuffed with characters. The writers wanted each character to have their own story arc, but there isn't enough time to give any of them proper treatment. I loved Eric in the first 2 seasons, he was a fully formed character with real depth, and it feels like we barely see him now. Half of the characters just feel like props they included to make a point. The intention to represent different types of people is great, but you need to make them fully realised characters, not just representations of categories.

i partially agree and partially disagree with you! looking at the entire show, i've always loved how sex education treated each and every character 3 dimensionally, and not just as stereotypical side characters. every time they introduced a new character, i liked knowing that said character would be sticking around, and we'd get to know more about them and how they'd integrate into the world of moordale. this made scenes like adam and ola becoming friends really interesting, because it's not something u'd expect but it makes perfect sense. at the same time though, the whole part about these in depth understanding of side characters i loved about this show is that you know they will slowly grow from "small side character" to "well integrated side-character", and that they will be a permanent part of the universe. the writers would play around with them, which led to us getting scenes like the ruby otis adam eric double date, undoubtly one of my favourite scene so far. the problem came in season 4, where these side characters that took so long to be a whole and solid part of the show got thrown out of the moordale secondary bubble. ola, jakob, lily, rahim, olivia, anwar, ruthie, steve, florence, dex, just to name a few, suddenly dissapearing in the very last season was a shock. all these characters that were a vital part of the sex educaiton eco-system suddenly dissapeared, making the season feel jarring and lacking. on top of that, they added a huge amount of new characters, which would have been fine, if it wasn't for the show being on it's very last season. that meant that a lot of the old side character's stories were left unfinished, while the huge block of new characters that were added in didn't have enough time to be fully developed. they were nice, these new characters, but they didn't have time to be what those old charcters already had been. on top of that, we now had 4 seperate worlds the season had to juggle with: canverndish, america (meave), the farm (adam), and the "adult's world" (jean + groff family). what used to be a "teen world & adult world" story became more split up and a bit complicated, which, again, cold have been managable if it wasn't for the fact that it was the last season. Adam barely interacted with the rest of the cast, so his story felt a bit left behind. i'd even say his story would have been omitted if it wasn't for the fact that he was a well-received character by the audience, and if he didn't have a connection with Mr Groff. because if they could include adam's story, why not ola's? i think instead of bombarding the very last season, which is supposed to tie up all lose ends and complete the story, with new characters, they should have kept the old charcaters and add in just a few new ones to spice things up. to have the characters less scatered around would have helped too. i, as a watcher, would have loved to see adam and rahim's friendship grow, something they teased at the end of season 3 but never touched on. i feel like the show could have touched up on things like that. again, i love the new characters, but for it being the last season, it did feel like too much of a change that didn't get enough time it needed for it's story to be told.

I loved Adam’s arc and his storyline in Season 4, I thought it was the most touching and profound; simple in idea which makes it very believable, and wonderfully executed thanks to the writing and acting. I loved Ruby in S4 too, would have liked to see more of her development. I liked Otis and Eric actually realising that their sexualities might be a hindrance to their friendship, because it seemed believable. The introduction of too many LGBT characters at the same time felt like propaganda pushing or force feeding the viewers this diversity narrative, which to be honest I think felt like pandering a bit much. You don’t just introduce these characters for the sake of being inclusive and then making them one-dimensional and then slap the “inclusive” label on it. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed the season and will miss the show loads
@nahuelma97 Жыл бұрын
Because of the circumstances that brought the characters in, I honestly didn't feel like they were pushed too hard. I mean, the way their school closed was very much in keeping with the show's trajectory, and more progressive schools like Cavendish are real as well. I did find myself rolling my eyes hard at some of the things that they showed at the beginning of the season, but I think that was sort of the purpose. I honestly can't remember exactly which ones but still. The character development in the show is pretty stellar. Adam's relationship with his dad touched me deeply due to my own relationship with my dad and the internal conflicts I have about it, so it was almost therapeutic to see it displayed in such a simple and impactful way

They have failed to make me like O. The scene where she equate Otis’ dad with Otis was so ridiculous. Why wouldn’t Otis said “I live with my mom”? None of O’s horrible actions were justified imo. It’s messed up that the only main East Asian cast in the entire series is so unlikable. Edit: I mean East Asian Scottish. The show is very diverse with many ethnicities and people of color, as well as obviously gender / sexual orientation spectrum. When people of color are cast I think we can assume it was intentional.

Not completely sure why half the cast was cut. I don’t know if it was a COVID thing or a budget thing but so much of what made the first 3 series so great was absent this season with little to no explanation. I heard they wanted to focus on core characters but that just can’t be completely true as it’s never been a huge problem in the past. I would’ve loved to see Otis and Maeve have at least one episode of comfort. It’s understandable that they’ve always followed the “never the right time arc” but after 3 seasons of constant will they won’t they I was kinda disappointed with their limited scenes in the final season. I thought they did a fantastic job with Aimee and Adam, Ruby never comes full circle but has great progression from first season. Eric’s side story is interesting yet somewhat misplaced. Jackson couldn’t get a single win in 4 seasons which is too bad and his character really gets left behind. Overall the finale wasn’t far off of where I thought they would go but I just might be gaining fatigue of them not having characters end up together for the sake of creating an emotional ending 🤷♂️

@dam22365 ай бұрын
looking back on the season, they probably did their best with the tools they had at the time. firstly, the whole set originally stood at the "moordale" campus, interiors of houses were built in the schools gym, maeve's caravan park was on a field next to the abortion clinic building from s1. but the campus was actually sold to developers (as in the end of s3) so they literally had to move everything. secondly, the cast was aging fast, asa was literally 10 years older than otis and it was starting to show. another big problem was that a lot of the original cast literally said no when asked to come back. and to top it all of, there were only like 5 original crew members including writers. i agree that s4 was rather bad, but it had it's moments, and considering everything that happened, it could've been A LOT worse. ps: netflix told the writers that s4 was gonna be the last when they were finishing writing episode 5, until that they may have been working with a fifth season in mind.

My take is that Ruby and Otis should have been the END GAME! For these reasons: 1. Otis was not the main reason why Maeve went back from the U.S. Maeve went back home to visit her mum (Erin) because she was in the hospital due to drug overdose and sadly, she passed away. 2. Maeve was discouraged by her jerk university professor. She felt disheartened and decided to take a break from studying. Hence, she decided to went back home. 3. Realistically. Ruby and Otis goes to the same university and are likely spend more time with each other and develop intimacy. Meanwhile, Maeve, Otis's supposed to be "love partner" is pursuing her studies in a different continent. 4. I also think the writers did not expect that the chemistry between Ruby and Otis in season 3 will CLICK with the fans. They might have realized that it was too late to change the script, recording and developing the relationship between Ruby and Otis would compromise the whole series. And so, Instead of giving Ruby and Otis the happy ending that they deserve. The producers were like "screw the fans, NO MOTIS or ROTIS will happen, we will keep them all hanging until the end!

What happened to Jean and Jakob?! Jackson’s character grew so much and they just leave him with such a lackluster final end. Adam deserved better. The new characters being LGBT wasn't an issue - in fact, it was kind of fun and refreshing to see the writers just go "to hell with it, they're all queer" - however, they certainly introduced too many plotlines. They could've either cut some of them, or done more episodes to the season. Otis and Maeve not ending up together was, to me, quite the profound choice. It's not a simple task for a teenager to live his country behind to go after a girl, and Maeve truly had to go. In the end I mostly found myself thinking I didn't care what happened, as long as Maeve got out.
