i hear that the best way to get into cybersecurity or sys admin is to start as a IT help desk position. its about building a foundation and then working up. most say that employers dont care about certs but the experience. and in the IT field, the experience starts from doing ground work and working your way up from IT help desk. it seems like the entry level for any IT position is IT help desk position. but how is it going for you? you find a job in cybersecurity with your security+ cert? i hear its good to good to get your network+ cert so you can understand what you are trying to protect with the skills of security+.

I was using Pocket Prep for months to study for Security Plus, and felt really confident after I scheduled my exam. Then I asked a friend who works in MSC as a Contractor if he had any "cheat codes" before sitting for my exam. He put me together with some CompTIA study materials and I was blown away. The CompTIA assessments were miles away from & head & shoulders above the Pocket Prep materials. I'm glad I asked my friend for help b/c if I hadn't crammed using the right materials I might not have passed. You need to make sure you know a few Network type scenario based [performance] questions. Use whatever study materials you feel comfortable with but just make sure they're comparable to what will be on the exam. I'm so glad I finally got my Cert, & look forward to Gov Tech & Contracting in my future. Thanks Symoné!

notice there's little to no mention of a security clearance for govtech? Just Sec+? I work govtech, private sector contracting, Sec+ is the bare minimum for IATII. Most of this audience are Civ's without a clearance, most 6-figure govtech jobs are TS/SCI and just having Sec+ without a clearance or bringing something else such as several years IT exp and a STEM degree won't even get you past HR because a clearance is expensive. You'll have a very good shot if you reclass because the clearance and experience will come with it. But this channel promotes Sec+ as the door opener to govtech and that is not at all how it works. I came from an AD position in the USAF working under USSOCOM then got into govtech; some experience, no degree, but a clearance, A/Net/Sec/CySA+, that is what opened the door. Not just Sec+, and she doesn't often talk about what else is needed. In the real world of govtech, just getting Sec+ and applying will result in 99% rejection without a clearance. And that 1% won't even come close to a 6 figure salary if Sec+ is all they're bringing to the table. But she rarely mentions the clearance part, just Sec+. It's disingenuous.

And that's a low-ball starting point for the industry. You were talking about 225K in a fairly short amount of time. Now I get it, that's not starting out, that's after Certs and Experience. And Money isn't the only thing, but it sure is a thing. You MUST mention the need for a clearance. Sec+ meets the bare minumim for IATII but with that, a clearance is a must for most govtech jobs. S minimum the 6-figure gigs are TS/SCI. Without an existing clearance and only Sec+ the odds of getting into govtech are bot good. If the applicant is bringing several years of IT experience and a related STEM degree as you did, then yes, it's far easier and much more likely to get sponsored for a clearance. As someone who also works govtech, when a resume shows up and they have little experience, no clearance, no STEM degree (even an AAS works) with just Sec+, its an instant rejection if it even manages to somehow get past HR to the PM and ISSM. DoD, Raytheon, Lockheed, CISA, VA... private or public sector of govtech won't sponsor a clearance if Sec+ is all you show up with.

Great video as always ! Do you also need to complete or get the network+ cert before you even proceed with the security+ ?
