Lions have the perfect leadership from Owner -> GM -> Head Coach -> OC. This is an NFL blueprint for success. Owner is supportive yet completely non-meddling. GM is an amazing drafter who does not care about outside perceptions or 'positional value'. Head coach is a hard-nosed motivator and leader of men, while still being a well-loved 'players coach'. OC is the creative and schematic genius.

I believe you missed a step between Owner -> GM, and that's Owner -> Special Advisor -> GM: Spielman's impact cannot be understated here. Sheila doesn't make the mistake that other billionaire owners are making by thinking that just because she owns the team, she knows how it works. The owner is supportive, and completely non-meddling because she HIRED AN EXPERT to do the meddling for her. Fortunately, Spielman is also incredibly supportive of the GM and HC, but that second step is really important because it allowed the owner to offload all football-related responsibilities onto a right hand who actually has the time to actively think about football while Sheila does what she does best, make (and manage) the money.

The key to the Lions success is great relationships and an emphasis on building relationships. The key to that skill is no egos. Brad and Dan have done wonders with that formula. This team plays hard for each other and does what is needed for team success without whining. The Lions have a ton of skilled players, but to go through all the injuries this season and still win is a testament to this team being greater than the sum of it's parts. This was a great video.

He does but 'structure' of the offense he's running is not his. It was designed by Campbell's vision especially with the absolute luxury of top end trench talents they have (when healthy). Which that quality of the the trench play has been tested not in the run game but in the passing game where Ragnow and Decker are having injured/down years and Glasgow/IOL not being as good. Which is why the Lions O-line uncharacteristically are bottom 5 in allowing pressures in late passing downs.

For the coaching staff, I find it very interesting that Campbell filled it with many former players. Older NFL fans may have heard names such as Mark Brunell, Antwaan Randle El and Aaron Glenn, who have transitioned from playing to coaching. Even Campbell himself used to play as a tight end. Considering how building relationships is key for team success, I guess it must be easier for position coaches to relate and impart their knowledge to younger guys who are following in their footsteps.
@zenspeed40415 күн бұрын
It's easier for players when their coaches are able to relate to them and have been out there in the trenches. Like when Aaron Glenn tells his defensive line that they can do this, those guys know he's been out there before and what he's done. And you know they're gonna bring up the time he tackled Barry Sanders.
@t4d0W2 күн бұрын
I mean maybe these former players are also good coaches on their part? For Campbell's credit where new HC hires are tested on seems to be the strength of their weakest 'link' in their staff to prepare the players with the weekly game plan. But when the staff is doing a great job, it lets Campbell improve on his other skills like time management on game day. Also Campbell has pruned his staff well in the last two years only letting go of Anthony Lynn (OC) and Aubrey Pleasant (secondary).
@djdanicp18 күн бұрын
It was basically a 30 year rebuild as far as the organization itself is concerned, but the catalyst to success was the day Martha Ford stepped down & passed the torch to Shiela Ford Hamp. That day, the Same Old Lions shed decades of incompetence & became the Brand New Lions. Every decision she subsequently made moved further away from the previous version of the team, starting with Chris Spielman. Thanks to the two of them, we got Holmes & upon his joining the brain trust, the 3 of them settled on Campbell. Campbell's ability to find & recruit some of the most talented & previously unknown coaches can't be understated as one of the biggest keys to their on field success. His staff is top notch.....one of, if not the best in the league. From top to bottom, the organization now runs like a well-oiled machine & everybody in the building is rowing in the same direction with a culture that is so uniquely pervasive shared by everyone from the front office to the training staff to the locker room that the bonds are like that of a family. When you factor in the continuity from year to year bc the staff wants to be in the building & have on multiple occasions turned down potential promotions elsewhere to remain with the team. Now, the most truly competitive players that are motivated to be the best & put winning above all jump at the chance to sign here & appreciate the opportunity to join a group that seems to be doing it the right way. This team is so different now, it might as well be a whole new franchise & it was the most impressive thing to follow closely in real time. Mark my words.....we are witnessing the start of the next NFL dynasty.

Might argue the fastest rebuild was Bill Walsh’s of the 1981 San Francisco 49ers or Don Shula in Miami, or even the 1999 Rams. Walsh got a Hall of Fame quarterback in the 3rd round in 1979 and the Niners were 2-14. He rebuilt his secondary in the 81 Draft. Shula rebuilt the Dolphin line and defense from castoffs and discovered Mercury Morris. The 1969 Dolphins were 3-10-1. The Rams got Kurt Warner as an undrafted free agent. That was supposed to be Trent Green’s team. The 1998 Rams were 4-12. In all cases the teams had front office or coaches (in SF case Walsh was both) who were capable of seeing NFL level talent in unusual places and developing it; Walsh and Vermeil got HOF quarterbacking at a discount, which allowed them to build a team around it. But Detroit follows the pattern set by both of having an inordinate amount of talent join a roster all at the same time.

I remember watching the Lions in the first half of the 2022-2023 and thinking, “These guys have got something”. They were losing games, but you could see that the puzzle pieces were starting to come together and they just needed to gel and bed in. This was a losing team, but it felt like there was a GOOD team waiting to break out. Then it clicked in the back half of the season. Suddenly, the team was winning most games. Not quite enough to scrape into the postseason, but you could tell that the Lions, with their mediocre on paper season, were going to be formidable the following year.

You gotta learn HOW to succeed, by being around others more successful, or who are where you wanna be. Take your notes while you no doubt take a few Ls. But, with no ego and communication, and no decisions made without the approval of another, makes it clear that those are critical to success

The upside of never going to a Super Bowl is never fearing losing there haha. Go Lions!

Tore it all down. After 2020 and we're the team to beat in 2023 new Orleans should follow suit.

No mention of Ben Johnson? His elevation was one of the major reasons that Detroit finished 2022-23 so well.

Omg how. Shes the starting reason we turned this around. I know she stands in the shadows n is humble and dosnt want people to tell her shes a big reason but she is. She is smart enough n was smart enough at the time to say hey i just need some men who know football. Lions football n how we go from 32 to 1. N she has done it

They will win the Super Bowl. And if we can keep Glenn and Johnson. We will be dominant for the next 6 years.

In 2026 they will have some guys leave but the hardest pressure will come on summer of 27’ and 28’ more than half their roster will be on the market for both those years. Brad is a great drafter and the lions have a good foundation but I won’t be surprised we see the team at crossroads again in 5-6 years

I think they got whiplash from that turn around that’s why we’re so injured this season

Lions are crushing it. However there's no way this is the fastest turnaround. They've lost for so many seasons. It's their time now. The culture and players are making it happen. Kudos

For years you heard ,"Lions will never be good until Ford family sells team". Well, the family still owns it.

The Lions 2021 offseason is one of the best in NFL History. Goff and Stafford are basically a wash from their standpoint, except Goff had less of a cap hit, but lets just call it even from the Lions standpoint(Rams got their Super Bowl so it worked out for them). In that case they essentially got 2 free 1st round picks and a third. In the draft they got an All Pro Tackle and arguably best in the league, an All Pro WR, Pro Bowl DT, plus SAM LB, plus Safety and another rotational DT. With the Rams picks they got a frontline RB, All Pro TE, 1K WR and the capital to get Brian Branch a likely pro bowl DB.

When they didn't let Brad pick his own coach, I knew it would work. 😅. So happy to be wrong 😂

I will say with Jamal being at the back before he was traded to GB set the tone for Detroit not being the same ole lions.

Last time they were competitive was with Calvin Johnson…. Also what would you count the Vikings as they just went to a conference championship game in I think 2017 and they have never had back to back losing years.
