Over the last decade, the modern farmhouse style has become extremely popular in home decor. The all white paint and minimal aesthetic is easy to achieve, which is part of why it has become so popular. However, many homemakers are beginning to trade in the all white look for warmth, coziness, color, pattern. We want our spaces to feel elevated and timeless and unique. Liz Quick of The Quick Journey joins me to discuss the good elements that came out of the modern farmhouse trend and how to achieve a more classic decor foundation in your home. I know that my own personal home decor style has evolved over the years, and I hope that this conversation will inspire you as you consider building a timeless foundation of beautiful decor in your own home.
In this episode, we cover:
- Why people are moving away from the commercialized farmhouse style
- How to create a timeless foundation in your home decor
- Simple, affordable decor pieces to swap out for the seasons
- Best places to source art and frames
- Creating a cohesive, classic gallery wall
- Tips for creating a beautifully decorated home on a shoestring budget
- Liz’s favorite DIY projects in her own home
- How to find quality antiques and incorporate them into your decor
- Simple ways to achieve the classic, old world style

I’ve always just decorated what felt good to me. Its very vintage, antique, classic, exactly like the home I grew up in. Minus the vintage Noah’s arks and cows my mom had everywhere 😂

I was watching Shaye Elliot years ago and knew she was on to something. The white, white, white in the farmhouses was going to go out of style and it was only a matter of time. People want original. They want cozy, not sterile. Love this podcast and how you ladies are saying what everyone else was thinking. Let's not be afraid of COLOR! Many blessings mamas! You inspire!

I think back to the popularity of Rachel Ashwell's Shabby Chic. She did lots of white but also touches of pastels.

I realized color on the walls keeps my house cozy, while letting me get away with minimal stuff. I live on a farm and it's hard to keep my house clean with 3 cowdogs and I'm outside constantly. If I keep my decorations paired down, it's easier to dust, vacuum, etc. I use art and dramatic walls instead.

4:22 I don't entirely understand why white paint became so popular. Like, it's beautiful, but it also shows dirt and dust exceptionally well!

@@belindascarborough6376 it’s more so stains. A white couch will stain easier than a beige one.

Being older and living through years and years of Antique White, Beige and Desert Tan and Mustard and Olive and related dim dying dreariness the clean bright look of a white has been a breath of fresh air. Museums show their art against white (the above colors show dirt and stains too, BTW). If you're afraid of kiddo messes (I'm a Boy Mom Survivor) paint a standard white eggshell with an extra gallon to touch up once in a while as needed. Moldings, doors and door frames must be a washable enamel - a wet rag swipe looks good as new - and can also be a more forgiving neutral darker washable enamel (see Farrow and Ball Purbeck Stone or one of the BM or SW greys or greiges.

What's funny is the TV, pinterest, and Instagram farmhouse style is the opposite of what us actual farmers have because it's not practical haha we need wipeable paint, hard floors, washable heavy duty rugs. Decorations are things you actually use and not just trinkets lol

I’m happy to see more people jump off that “farmhouse” ship that I never thought was very authentic having grown up with grandparents with an actual working farm - which had none of the “farmhouse” decor, shiplap, the French apron sink, etc., and they never called their house a “farmhouse” either☺️ It’s more like the current cottagecore trend☺️

Love this one, the farmhouses I grew up in (Grandma's and Dad's) were definitely not white in white. Natural or painted wood moldings, wood paneling, chair rails, plastered walls with colorful paint or wallpaper. White can be hard to maintain and keep clean and fresh, especially on a farm. 😁 I've not seen them do farmhouse style, but The Sorry Girls have some great DIYs of expensive items that they remake for much less. I don't like all of them, but it's cool watching the process.

One thing I struggle with is STORING away my seasonal things. One almost needs a storage shed (we live in an old farmhouse so there's no modern garage, only barns)! Would love a podcast on this. I did see that Joanna Gaines had a large storage shed on their property at one point. {grin}

I agree, I live in an older home with just enough storage for clothes and nothing else. I’ve had to purge a lot of my seasonal stuff.

I have a small house, and I personally think the key to that is using natural elements for seasonal decor as in clipping flowers for summer and clipping greenery from trees in the winter. I have a stash of useable things - quilts, pillow covers, dishes, curtains, art, etc., that I rotate seasonally but not bunnies for Easter or faux pumpkins, faux greenery, etc., and that makes a big difference. Much less to store☺️

I agree with @Whispering Pines Homestead. As a Wacoan I know one of her secrets is to not have very many actual decorations for a specific season or holiday (perhaps Christmas is an exception). Her metal wall pockets for example hang on the wall year round but are filled with holly or local greens at Christmas or spring flowers or wheat sheaves at harvest. A single basket can hold kids toys at one point in life and move to holding craft supplies or farmer's market pumpkins on the porch in fall.

I remodeling my home that is 32 years old we took out a wall that was 2 living rooms now one put hickory wood floor stained light and chantilly lace white paint and hickory cabinets with oil rubbed bronze hardware and oil rubbed bronze pendants with seeded glass and chandelier too. We are having quartz countertops that are white with veins bronze running threw it also to the backsplash and white farmhouse sink oil rubbed bronze fixtures. We are almost done so excited it is my farmhouse style ❤️ the big changes from no carpet and tile to hickory flooring. And white paint is so bright. Let me know what else I can add to my farmhouse look ❤️

Also I need a idea for a wall in my dining with strips of mirror like 10 inch wide. The whole wall is the strips of mirror and after 32 years of cleaning these mirror I need a new idea. Want to cover with ship lap or a Wayne’s on the bottom and on the top paint the wood a navy because I need some color we will be gluing over the mirror because it won’t come off. I need ideas for this wall.

But I'm still a Joanna Gaines fan - the genius of a neutral palette gives the best backdrop for changing color throughout the year based on seasons, holidays, family events.
