What is missing from Russia is what seems general intelligence. If Putin had one ounce of grey matter, he would have been able to understand that starting a war with Ukraine would attract NATO support. With such support he would have understood he has no chance of succeeding. The first step would have been to gain a real understanding of your strength. I disagree with pretty much everything Nikolai Petrov said regarding the future of the war. It's completely the opposite. How many people Russia could mobilize is totally irrelevant. They can't transport, arm, house or feed them. 2 million Russians on standby may as well be two million cows. In fact, I would argue that 2 million cows would be more effective, since the only capacity they could serve in is cannon fodder, and at least cows can stampede and can survive by eating grass. As far as attrition goes, Ukraine has been winning that all along, and will continue to do so if they maintain western support. Russia's military machine is running out of hardware and ammunition far worse than Ukraine's, and their economy is going down the drain along with the ruble. Add to that the fact that Russia isn't paying half the soldiers they already have deployed, nor are they tracking the soldiers they've lost so they can provide recompense to widows and families left behind, and you're not going to find soldiers who are willingly going to join, nor who will be able to fight undistracted by the poverty of their unpaid families back home.

You’re going to have to temper your expectations. Instability in the Russian military doesn’t mean their defensive lines are going to collapse tomorrow. Quantity has a quality all its own. But that said, it’s partly because of this incompetence and instability that Ukraine survived the initial attack. That they’ve managed to retake Kharkiv and Kherson. And that Russia’s spring offensive failed.

I haven't come across Putin speaking on military matters, except on conscription. Perhaps, Shoigu and Gerasimov brief him on military affairs and the decisions they take and he ok's them after their explanations. Shoigu and Gerasimov keep a low profile, and they don't seem to speak to the Russian press. No one seems to know why Russian generals have been replaced, making people conjecture about the reasons. It makes sense to retain Shoigu and Gerasimov for Putin. The Russian news media don't seem to know at all who may replace them, just as there seems to be no successor to Putin.

It is quite normal in war to re-shuffle High Command so that only the most able generals are in charge of making critical decisions. Typically, the enemy adds spin on this decision and adds its own destabilising interpretation that Russia's High Command is faltering.
