Love this play style. I also highly prioritize building from the back and using a dynamic backer to, when situation dictates, become a fullback and press a numbers advantage.

Combining gengenpress with peps contingency plan of tactical fouls was one of teh finest the EPL had, I think 16/17, never conceded from open play. Your analysis are spot on. I love them

A team with a midfielder with long range of accurate passing, a winger with good finishing + pace and a CF with hold-up play and movement is must to counter. For example RM 2022 , FCB this season, Salah-Trent-Firminho, etc

Nah... Not about those spesifics, but rather a well drilled pattern of distribution to play from under the gegenspress. Most often this is done by rapid sequence of short passes, rather than long ball. Having players with accurate passing and good finishing is of cource better compared to having players with poor long range passing and bad finishing. Those particular traits, however aren't the key traits to counter gegenspress. You can even counter gegenspress with gegenspress 😊

I'd say any manager who learns to constantly exploit switches of play to progress the ball to attack will have a system that punishes counter pressers and high lines constantly.

Gegenpressing is awesome. No need for players like Ozil anymore as even trequartistas can play as box to box pressing machines. Love that players are so fit nowadays.

The gegenpress makes back 3 shapes more popular, both offensive shapes and defensive ones. More coaches use back 3 shapes, more demand for versatile centerbacks, fullbacks and midfielders, all of whom excel in back 3 shapes Quite a vicious cycle 😂

A low block team is easier to beat with the gegenpressing. When the low block team takes the ball for a split second to counter attack, they have actually moved out of their low block to attack and that is when gegenpressing teams can take advantage and win the ball back to score. As far as teams who keep the ball well like Bayern under Kompany, Barcelona had lesser ball control but still beat them 4-1

Follower and big fan of the channel, but "if we are to understand X, we first need to...." is quite often not true. I know I am being excessive, but my academia-brain cannot help reacting to this. I have the same take as a bunch of other analysts have said - 4-4-2 is coming back. More than it was with Simeone. Too many teams are setting up to control the middle. Once some get tired fighting fire with more expensive fire, things will change.
