My dad played a 1952 J200 and that is what I learned on.... he introduced it to me as a child as "the finest acoustic guitar ever made!" I now picked up a 12 year old J200, a dream guitar for sure! There is absolutely nothing like it, all others pale by comparison to me for sure

A little late to the party here, but I am very lucky enough to own the J200 trifecta: the standard, the J200 parlor, and the J200 12-string. All three are incredible, heirloom instruments. The thing that strikes me most about these guitars is that despite their size, they have a very controlled, mellow tone. Just magical.

I own a Gibson J200, a J150, a Hummingbird and a J45, Yes, I know, I am spoilt for choice. What is quite funny that I just bought my J150 yesterday, 2002 model in Natural, and now I see this vid!!! The main reason I love the Jumbo bodies is because: 1. They are very comfortable to play as the body size allows for a nice resting place for the strumming hand which doesn't fatigue my arm. 2. They look amazing. 3. They sound incredible, which I can best describe as sweet, full and warm and super dynamic. 4. It was always the most iconic acoustic guitar for me growing up, as both my father (who doesn't play guitar but loves music) and I were always in awe with them. And do I believe anyone makes a better Jumbo than Gibson, short answer is No. Can't beat originality, you can only imitate it and make it a different flavour. However I do believe that companies such as Guild who also make a Jumbo style guitar make a phenomenal instrument, however it is never going to be THE Jumbo that we all know and love.

It could be a very interesting lesson for a lot of people looking to hone their ears and learn what make guitar tones unique.

Hi Tony, I recently bought the Emerald X30 Jumbo, big beefy sound on the lows yet some wonderful highs on the other end. The J200 was my inspiration in buying one, for me, it was just too large. The Emerald carbon fibre guitar is sculpted to fit anyone. I love it.
@catherineabbott62492 жыл бұрын
Hi ElaineV. Your comment is music to my... ears...fingers...brain... oh well. So much for mixed metaphors. If you are comfortable sharing, how tall are you? How did the X30 sculpting help you get close to your guitar? A tall friend of mine, who has no trouble reaching around a jumbo, says the first time he tried the X30 he said he found the vibrations against stomach/mid-section a little strange. He must of liked it since he eventually bought an X30. Unfortunately for me he lives on the other coast, so I will not be able to try his X30 until my next trip out west.

I love my SJ200 because it’s a great strummer, a great finger picker, and somehow it’s almost as easy to bend strings as an electric guitar - hard to achieve this with a standard scale length guitar. It’s also surprisingly comfy for a larger guitar. Many thanks to Don Ruffatto for helping me out with acquiring my SJ-200!

You have a grateful heart and I appreciate your comment. I have always wanted a Gibson but the weird truss rod adjustment nut weakens the neck or the throat and I have been scared off from owning one. My thinking. I wonder what you mean by a typical scale length. I have several different and many similar, but I would not know what is a typical, regular scale. Some are longer and some are shorter. Each serves a purpose and fills a need. I am happy you enjoy this guitar. May you both have many happy hours of joy!

I'm only a beginner, but I loved this guitar mostly because of its genuine, big and warm sound. It simply fills up the room. For me, compared to other acoustic guitars that I had the chance to touch, it's almost like listening to your favourite song first on a super-quality sound system and then play it on you phone... well, I may exaggerate a bit here because this is obviously my personal taste and biased opinion, but you get the point. It's also a very comfortable guitar to play, in spite of its size. And then, of course, because, as an appearance, it is also a genuine work of art. Unfortunately, I could only afford an Epi EJ200 that I've bought after making acquaintance with THE J200, played it for about half an hour and managed to annoy everyone in that store... some of you may know those glances. I have to admit that the Epi is good enough for me at this stage, projects a more than decent sound and, after the required setup, polish and cleaning, it sounds and feels like one of the J200's pretty close cousins, if you get the meaning. I'm truly proud of it.

I'm primarily an electric guitarist who plays Rock, but I LOVE acoustics, and have a couple of good ones I use mostly for recording (and sometimes songwriting). My holy grail acoustic was always the SJ-200 and finally got one 10+ years back. I once heard Pete Townshend (a huge proponent of the SJ-200 in most of his recorded work) say the reason he loved the SJ-200 was because they produce very explosive sound and RECORD fantastic. Pete said the harder you strum them the better they respond and record. I can certainly corroborate that statement. The SJ-200 remains my go to acoustic for recording. Doesn't even need a particularly expensive, high end mic, to get great sound either.

Used to play Les Paul electrics, but went acoustic in the 80s. First good acoustic I bought was the J-200. Loved the unique look and the awesome sound. I bought mine new in 1985, and it turned out that the production model for that year was rosewood B&S for the Gibson 90th Anniversary. I previously sent in a picture featuring one for the 'Guitarsenal' segment. It's also the model used in the famous live video duet by Mark Knopfler and Chet Atkins. It's on KZbin. They are each playing one. Mine has no electronics. All my acoustic guitars are Jumbo shaped, most of them of the 17" variety. My rosewood '14 Taylor 818e Grand Orchestra sounds very similar. It is a Jumbo with a slightly wider waist, re-designed by Andy Powers. I string both of those with Elixir PB HD Light gauge {.013 - .053} strings. Helps give 'em a nice balanced sound. I fingerpick, using my nails as picks. The rosewood also provides a smoother sound than maple, with a longer decay. I also have rosewood 12 string guitars. A Taylor Grand Orchestra and a Guild F-1512 Jumbo. All are variations on the same aural theme. Be well and play well, Don

I also have a J-45 and a Martin D-18, but 99% of the time you'll find me with my '200 in hand... just look at my profile pic.... I think the J-200 is the greatest all-around rhythm guitar, ever. They work equally well for a singer-songwriter or in the middle of a band, they seem to sit in the mix just right. They're also excellent lead guitars. I'm a flatpicker so dreads are my bread & butter, but a J-200 is the guitar I want as my vacation guitar so to speak, when I want a different sound than my D-28. I see the J-200 as my "everything but bluegrass" guitar.

Why I love it, have always wanted one, but didn’t buy it: I retired in Phoenix where humidity is often below 10%, and after 55 years of playing, I have learned that I just don’t play guitars that are in their cases. So, I went with a carbon fiber RainSong Jumbo with StagePro Anthem…no humidification, stays in tune, ALWAYS feels exactly the same. Is it better than a J200? If you like your guitars on stands or wall hangers, live In Phoenix, or like to throw your guitar in the car for extended road trips, the RainSong is most certainly better…

I favour my Martin J40, smaller outline but deeper body. Like the J200 is a Swiss Army knife guitar, not just a one trick pony. Great for fingerstyle, flatpicking and chords, and excellent for backing vocals. However, nobody can deny the aesthetic or influence of the J200. A piece of history. As an aside, I note that Gibson recommend string it with 11-53. Interesting. As another aside, Stefan Grossman said that Rev Gary's J200 sounded 'like a washing machine' - I guess he never changed the strings! Great lick, too, which I will be immediately ripping off for Dylan's 'As I walked out one morning.' Thanks, Tony.

@@6806goats1 Not too familiar with the J200 EJC. I think that one has a solid top and laminated back and sides, from the search that I did. They also offered it in all black, which is a beautiful looking guitar. The step up to the " Inspired By Gibson" line up gets you a solid Sitka spruce top and solid Maple back and sides. They are also about $900.00, which is about 1/6 the cost of the Gibson. 6ou will also get those that will snub the Epiphone because it isn't made in the US. I'm not one of those people. The best jumbo ever? I love the jumbos. The J200 pretty much defined the jumbo shape (“form-factor” in nerd-newspeak). Guild was the first guitar maker to make their own versions of it. While the Guild jumbos look very similar to the Gibson, it’s not accurate to call them rip-offs. They’re more different than they are alike in construction and especially in sound. The Gibson is much brighter sounding. The Guild F50s are more chime or bell-like with a noticeably longer decay And (IMO, until the recent advent of Yamaha’s LL-16-12 which utilizes Yamaha’s proprietary jumbo body), Guild’s F-412 and some F-512 jumbos were the industry standard for 12-string acoustics. The extremely rare Guild F-612, the biggest guitar ever built at that time, and of which only 6 to 11 specimens - depending on who you ask - are said to exist, is the “holy grail” of jumbos.

I favour my 1975 Aria "lawsuit": sounds the same looks the same except for no "Dirty-Sanchez" moustache, plays the same... What makes the difference? €480 instead of €6000 I let my dentist or my lawyer buy Gibson's, I buy musical instruments rather than legends! In terms of 12 strings jumboes, the best one I EVER touched is the Hagström BJ-12. I knew an early 70's one belonging to an old bluesman, I found my 1968 one for €670 in near mint condition. You definitively have heard the BJ-12: Space Oddity : that's it! Bowie kept his for his whole life. The Beatles, Frank Zappa, Genesis and Cat Stevens used it too. Play some Pink Floyd 12str acoustic stuff on it and one thing for sure, the Martin D12-28 is no more on your buy list... Then... I know it's a very different world but... I love my 1986 Ovation Elite 1768-C (cedar top instead of Sitka on regular 1768), these are the deep-bowl Ovations, those which really sound, probably the loudest acoustic guitars around, thanks to the roundback and the multi-holes... The regular 1768 sounds like DiMeola's 1769 Custom Legend but louder. The 1768-C sounds much warmer and punchier. It's my preferred Ovation since the time of the ADGPA conventions! There were a lot of Ovation users in the Atkins/Dadi possee as late Marcel Dadi (who died on Flight TWA800) was an Ovation endorser. I didn't liked his personal signature model which I tried when I jammed with him , but I freaking liked the 1768-C I tried during a convention, it's absolutely awesome. Excpect spending €750 for a regular 1768, €1600 for a 1769 DiMeola signature and €950 for a 1768-C but since mine has the left horn on the headstock broken, I got it with its molded ABS hardcase for cheaper than dirt : €300 (!!!) Moreover, 1768-C are absolutely gorgeous: www.dolphin-gt.co.jp/stock/7500/ova_ce1768_7500_sp.jpg And you can really shred, they won't saturate like other acoustics!

The problem I have with my Gibsons G20 I had three of them and the problem I ran into was they were using cheap Fretz they should be automatically stainless Fretz and they’re not they’re aluminum and they dent very easily and it’s $1000 to take off the binding and have it redone, which I find hideous when they could’ve prevented that when you spent the five grand to buy the guitarthat’s what pisses me off about Gibson

Too big for me. Even my dreads (J-45, D-28) feel oversized. Martin OMs are my preferred size. I've got an OM-28, OM-18, OME Cherry, and 000-28 that are all the most comfortable guitars I've ever played.

Shouldn’t a socialist be appalled by such over abundance in luxury goods? Instead they are jealous? We must only have according to our need right? I guess we can all expect a sizable guitar collection for ourselves in the coming utopia? Great episode. Just having some fun.
