Scarlet is the upcoming fourth studio album by American rapper and singer Doja Cat. It is set for release on September 22, 2023, through Kemosabe and RCA Records. Disillusioned with pop music and dissatisfied with music critics questioning her status as a rapper, Doja Cat felt inspired to create a "masculine" follow-up to her third studio album, Planet Her (2021). Musically, the record marks a departure from the pop-driven sounds of its predecessor, being predominantly centered around the genres of hip hop and R&B.

It’s really disappointing that the general public has regarded the most recent situation with Doja and her fans as an artist calling out parasocial issues when in reality, she responded very poorly to people rightfully calling her out for dating an alleged predator/abuser and was blocking fans online who were bringing a light to the situation.

But the thing is, most people are cancelling her because of those things, not because of her boyfriend. Because, unless you're chronically online, most people really don't know about the boyfriend situation and nobody seems to report on that. Is more normal for people to catch up on her change of aesthetics when she's doing it everywhere and constantly posting about it in her social media and music. This really feels like the 90's again, when everybody is upset about the celebrities doing things that "go against God" and using satanical (or just dark and weird) aesthetics, instead of critiquing those celebrities for the bad things they actually do. If anything, her new persona feels more like a rebranding, that's actually she trying to hide other things she's going through. Does she want to be let go by her label and go back to a more independet feel? Because this "I hate my fans and my music" just feels overdone and not that honest.

Because as terrible as that is 1) we don’t know the whole story and 2) it does not affect us nearly as much as people say it does. I think you’re right about how it shouldn’t be overlooked, but kayla is not overlooking it. There’s a lot of discussion online about that aspect of the situation, but there are also other valid points worth bringing up. Especially because we flock to entertainers for their ability to provide material for us, not for their personal lives. I can’t lie and say I ever really cared about Doja’s history like that. A lot of people do, though, and are denouncing her because of how she moved forward in her relationship and the vehement defense of a predator. That being said I have seen literally no one mention the names of these victims or highlight their stories, nor to anything to aid these people or attempt to prevent situations like that happening again. It seems like ppl only care about condemnation, which, even if she may rightfully deserve it, doesn’t help the issue much.

@@holyfool5605i'm sorry, your points go out the window the second the situation is about a child predator. the only thing you had a little of a point on is "no one highlighting the victims". then again, i personally wouldn't want my name to be spread around in regards to my sexual abuse, so i don't spread their names around. but what else can people do? how is mentioning what he's done not highlighting anything enough? is it cause it's in doja's music's comments? sorry she's the famous one, i don't get enlightened centralists when they try to point out bad but aren't critical enough to offer a solution.
@holyfool5605

@@femalegays no, my points don't go out the window. what is anyone really doing? she's dating a predator and defending him. so i stopped listening to her music and giving her money, as did so many others. but people still went online to make hashtag threads about it, giving her publicity. people gave her publicity when her song leaked because they wanted to hear how bad it was. she's making money off of that kind of attention -- ofoff the terrible actions committed to those people and her defending that man. I'm bringing up a different perspective because i *understand* the OG comment -- what she's doing is egregious. i also want people to understand that kayla brings up good points, too. and like I said, people seem to care more about the condemnation than rectifying any mistakes. i brought up the victims' stories because i thought that's why they confronted doja-- they wanted their stories to be known so he can be condemned. but i understand where you're coming from and it makes sense now that i haven't heard their names yet. people seem to act like who they care about in this equation *are* the victims. no, people care about doja-- if this were a random predator with random victims people would care less. but it's specifically an outrage because doja cat is involved. I'm not an "enlightened centralist" for acknowledging that. and yes, i don't have any solutions either because i have no power in the situation. i think the only thing that can really be done about it is to stop acknowledging her. if you really want action petition music and fashion magazines to take her name down, write letters with signatures to record and magazine labels requesting an open condemnation. but the truth is shit like this is too common in the industry. there are movements happening out there and charities to donate to if you want change. talking about it until it trends on twitter for extended periods of time can only do so much.

Doja's success proves my point that Internet hate doesn't mean shit. I feel like a lot of the biggest names in music and film are really hated by online pop culture circles, but in the end, they're still selling out shows, topping the charts, and getting booked for high-paying roles. What they often don't realize is that these loud pop culture circles are a fraction of a fraction of the people who consume media. Often times, online hype is just that. Hype. I remember for like three or four years straight on Twitter, you couldn't go a single day without seeing somebody go viral saying how they couldn't wait for Bobby Shmurda to get freed from jail so that he could get back to the studio and make more music. Sure enough, he gets freed, released music almost immediately, and no one gave a fuck. All that talk and buildup for nothing. Same goes in the opposite direction for Doja Cat or Harry Styles or Morgan Wallen or whoever pop culture circles online hate this week. As long as the hits keep rolling, nothing they say or do will have any effect on these people at all
@Liam-xf5tv
@Liam-xf5tv 8 ай бұрын
The topping charts despite hate is due to labels paying for musicians to play on the radio 24/7 until you like their work. It’s simple like this. If you have payola, you’ll chart. If you’re the most talented musician with the catchiest songs in the world without a label, you will not exist on Billboard and ppl will call you a “flop”

@cityboy2092 8 ай бұрын
@@Liam-xf5tv Oh please. She's touring arenas and virtually all of the shows are sold out. Did the label pay for that too? Also, if it was so easy for labels to just use payola for their artists, then why do we see huge names flopping left, right, front and center all the time? Katy Perry had 9 #1 hits and then tanked afterwards. Selena Gomez gets a ton of radio play but her new single isn't doing shit. Miley Cyrus had a smash with Flowers, but none of her songs afterwards stuck and she's had almost two decades of industry support. Labels can't save music no one likes. @Liam-xf5tv 7 ай бұрын
@@cityboy2092 Calm down bro, Im not saying her music isn’t good and that she doesn’t have her merits. Of course payola doesn’t work if the songs are not appealing. On the other hand if the songs are minimally appealing and you have payola, you will chart, that’s a fact. Look at the whole cardi b trend in 2018, she would sell arenas and yall would die for that woman at that time, now y’all know the label payed for her to play on the radio until you liked that song. If Olivia Rodrigo didnt appear on Spotify 24/7 when she released drivers license, y’all would say she is just a normal alternative artist. On the other hand you see absolute viral bangers of independent artists that everyone knows, but no one has seen on charts. Ppl don’t like cardi songs anymore, but she still always on the hot 100, even though not in the same high position. Doja cat is definitely messy as hell to put it mildly. I've been following her music since the Purrr EP dropped but didn't keep up with her socials, I heard most news of her antics second hand. So I'm not that invested in all of it. There is a strong case to be made of the parasocial relationships that her stans have had with her that she has also been feeding into by being a terminally online persona. Twitter mobs blow things out of proportion when they dig up old tweets for dirt and attempt to cancel celebs who may have grown and changed their stance on things since then, especially when they were young when the tweets were made. I think eagerly keeping tabs on who a celebrity is dating also falls into the same realm of paparazzi-like insanity. At least paps get paid for it. Doja is not the first celeb to date a known sexual predator/abuser or be one and the other celebs who got 'cancelled' over it still have strong fanbases and careers. So fans yelling at her online about it is not going to change things. She's also not the first celeb to not be nice to fans, but at least she is upfront about it. I'm not saying any of this in defense of Doja. I really do think she doubles down too much and contradicts herself, instead of just acknowledging, apologizing and moving on. I have a suspicion she does a lot of the unsavory things on purpose to troll people in an attempt to get attention or manufacture outrage. Ultimately, she is just being a shrewd businesswoman. If Taylor Swift for example has perfected her persona of being the 'good girl' and 'America's sweetheart', it looks like Doja wants to go the opposite direction of being 'The Devil'. It might be the persona the industry wants her to take or one she wants for herself post her conformist pop girl era/has always wanted or a combination of all of that. Speaking of which, using satanic imagery in music is so uninspired at this point that the fact that people are getting their panties in a twist and having a satanic panic over her music is hilarious.

If she hated her past two albums, it's because it was her label that tried to push her to become a main pop girl, and they might be letting her do what she wants now, but i feel like once the album falls out of grace, the label will have a reason to keep a tighter grip on her. She's trying to ruin her career so they will want to drop her, but they'll use it as a "See? We let you do what you wanted and it didn't sell. We're taking the wheel again."

Firstly, I'd just like to point out that if this "I don't give a fuck 'bout none of you bitches" attitude resulted in Doja Cat flopping all over the place (which, you don't have to tell me how ridiculous that sounds; I already know), she would be changing her tune VERY quickly. Just sayin'. Secondly, I'm fucking bored. I don't fucking care that Doja Cat wants to lean into an edgy image with a more hip hop/trap leaning sound; that's her fucking business. I'mma either like or I'm not. And I rly don't think that's the problem here. Tbh, I don't think most of her fans care about that, because the singles from Scarlet have done pretty well, so far. What I care about is the fact that Doja Cat flipped out on her fans for calling her out for associating with a known predator. And I feel like every time we have a discussion about this, everyone wants to discuss everything but that. And like, maybe this is a controversial opinion, but your actions still matter, even if you're a celebrity. ie You do some nasty shit (like, idk, associating with a known fucking predator) and people are gonna comment on it. If I can get cussed out on Twitter for saying K-Pop Group A is better than K-Pop Group B (even though I have less than 48 followers), then Amala can fucking deal with people telling her it's not cool that her boyfriend (or whatever the fuck that dude is to her) is a creep.

No one asked, but imma say it anyways: My problem with Doja is that I feel as if nothing she does is really genuine. It's all for attention. Which makes sense considering she is an ex 4chan incel. There's tons of artists who've shut down the parasocial relationship and just do what they do because they love the art, and it works. But with Doja Cat...idk. like if you really hate the parasocial relationship, stop tweeting, don't do all the extra stuff like livestreaming, literally delete social media and focus on music like how you say you wanna do. It's all talk no show with her, and boy does she talk big. I was never a Doja Cat fan, but I did like a couple of her songs. Now though, I don't even enjoy listening to the songs I liked because she called everyone stupid for falling for the cash grabs. Like sis, why are you trying to make ppl feel guilty and ashamed for liking a song? I want no part in anything she creates because I simply don't respect immature artists.

Her interpretation of the demon aesthetic is great, but it's a tired old trick that has been used by several other mainstream artists in the past year alone. I feel like Doja Cat can be easily compared to Tyler, The Creator. Both started out as one of the millions of SoundCloud rappers that filled their respective niches in the late 2000's/ early 2010's, made music for their fans for a while, before splitting off and doing something more self fulfilling. The difference is in their reception, and while I believe records like Flowerboy, CMIYGL and especially IGOR are generally of a higher quality than Doja Cat's newer style, I feel like a lot of it does come down to plain old sexism. You see this a lot if you start looking, like the Taylor Swift and Kanye drama, where a lot of people side with Kanye even though he was both objectively in the wrong and literally opening for her in an award show. I'd like to acknowledge my bias towards Tyler as IGOR and CMIYGL are two of my favorite albums of all time but I feel like my point still stands.

To me, the preeeequel to all the turmoil surrounding her public image (we cannot even say downfall because PTTR is at the top of Hot 100) started all the way back at the 2021 Paraguay Lollapalooza collapse where she treated poorly nearly all staff working for her and with a very uppity over-the-shoulder look (even telling people to not look at her in the eyes) and never showing up to the fans on 2 different days who had been camping out of her hotel (not AT THE DOOR but you know, within proximity) for over a week, prior to the show obviously getting cancelled due to a massive flood that unfortunately took place. Something shifted within her psyche that day. She acted VERY erratic on twitter, entered a hiatus, blamed the fans, fake-pumped to go into retirement ¿doesn't all this sound like it could be happening right now? She handled that situation EXTREMELY poorly - and do not try to justify any of her behavior if you were born in the US, the Commonwealth countries or Europe, your privileged ass is not a part of this conversation - but it was the first visual glimpse at how "done" and "tired" she was with the fans, her fans, the "entitlement" of her fans, the parasocial relationships and all that jush. That weekend really tipped something inside her when it came to her perception of fans and the public, and as time went by, her stance only gained strength and power, even moreso boosted with well her dating a whole ass abuser and allat. I will say that her entire Scarlet/demonic act for this era I find it interesting and is clearly well-thought and intelligent, she assumes a position in a hyperbolic way because _she sees it_ as "she was thrusted into that position", as in 'oh you wanna demonize me? i'm gonna show you what a demon is", pretty much like Nicki with Chun-Li but you know more pompously thought-out.

So here she is trying to use shock value. So yes, she is a bit of a cringy edge-lord because everything she said people already knew. It's is so, so low of her to flat out go off at her fans and treat them as brainless puppets who need to be told basic things. As soon as this flops she will either go back to what it was, show her authentic self as she used to at the beginning or this is gonna be it. She will become a forever cringy edge-lord. Kinda like Madonna who still doesn't know when to quit. It's honestly just sad to watch.

Her 4chan self-posts are hilarious and iconic honestly, desperate hilarious lolcow behaviour (think she even used one of the banners in the video lmao). tbf a lot of people who got on the internet in past times got into 4chan (if you weren't on myspace you were there if you used the internet as a kid) and spending enough time around hate as a brown/black kid + being a woman on the site that incels and other misogynists love can go a few ways from hardening you (in some cases too much) to turning you into a pick-me "one of the good ones" type. Not totally excusing it but Doja hasn't really had the chance to grow yet cause the fame is locking her into that phase, especially as she's not being allowed to get it out of her system while the studio is blocking her into particular sounds. It's an embarrassing phase and I hope she grows out of it soon and goes to one of the female-only chan boards that bans raceposting instead

Doja Cat isn't above criticism, but it's surreal that one of her first viral hits was a thirst trap shitpost, and then had the expectation of being a role model kind of forced onto her. That doesn't absolve her of anything, but it represents a misunderstanding of the type of artist she is, and the fact that much of her persona developed from fending off against edgelords online tells us that she probably defies traditional methods of shame that might work for most other people.

Say what you want about Doja, but I think it was really rude of Lorry to make an entire video about whether Doja and Megan Thee Stallion did plastic surgery or not. It's frankly none of your business what other people choose to do with their bodies, and you shouldn't make it other people's business either. Not to mention there's a long-standing history in this country of white people putting Black women's bodies on display and scrutinizing them from every angle. Honestly it just makes me so mad and I don't blame Doja at all at all for going off on her. The rest of this video though...yeah. And let's not forget how Doja is homophobic(said the f-slur and didn't apologize, rather, she chose to defend herself), and also appropriated Indian culture in one of her music videos(although I sadly forgot which one).
