The religious strife seems to be a common thread through many periods in the past and even today. Humans want certitude and enshrine their own particular gods to do that. And then someone like Cromwell comes along who sets out to turn it all upside down. Years later a similar zealot in China, Mao Zedong, murdered millions via the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution which also destroyed much of China’s treasures. I saw evidence of smashed Buddha carvings in Hangzhou as well as tributes to him. You have woven a fascinating tale. Perhaps someday you can further describe the impact of Jesuits on cultural life in China and Japan. As well as the Venetian connection and Marco Polo. You are a most interesting teacher. Thanks.

Thomas Cromwell , briefly Earl of Essex, was an English lawyer and statesman who served as chief minister to King Henry VIII from 1534 to 1540, when he was beheaded on orders of the king, who later blamed false charges for the execution. Cromwell was one of the most powerful proponents of the English Reformation, and the creator of true English governance. He helped to engineer an annulment of the king's marriage to Catherin…

Porcelain ultimately comes from the Italian word for a small pig (porcello) .I once thought this was because pig bones were ground up into the mixture to make porcelain but I checked the etymology and it said because the cowrie shells look like little pigs.

My Dear Mr. Combs thank you so much for the delightful video. If I might make a suggestion, if you ever have the time you might enjoy reading Lady Antonia Frasers books Royal Charles and Cromwell, it will give you a more balanced picture of the Lord Protector. Believe me as a Boyce I have a bone to pick with his treatment of the Irish, and as a child of Pennsylvania I owe a good deal to Charles the seconds attempt to establish a state where there would be religious toleration, I am no Titus Ochs. That being said Cromwell was not all bad, and Charles was not all good, King Charles sold out his country to his cousin the Sun King and though he genuinely loved his queen he was never faithful to her. I believe that Cromwell was a true believer in what he wanted for his country, That the republic was a failure is not a question, how much of that failure was due to Cromwell is not certain. A funny aside When he was first in government Churchill (then a liberal) proposed naming a battleship Cromwell and another Naseby. The king was not amused.

Must you have your face in every single frame of the video? Plenty of video producers narrate without showing their faces, which have nothing to do with the subject. It seems very egocentric to me, and adds nothing.

I am SO glad that Peter personalizes and graces these videos with his presence. I don’t know how long you’ve been watching these, but I have been watching since 2019, every single week, and I’ve watched many of them over and over. I have never thought of Peter as remotely egocentric; he’s a very generous man who offers these videos as a gift to those of us who are fascinated by and collect antique Asian art. I don’t think I’d be such an avid follower of these without Peter’s presence on the screen. They would be impersonal. All KZbin hosts that I follow are on the screen, so it’s hardly an anomaly! Grrrr!

The real old-school guys (like Richard Burton, Richard Harris, Peter O'Toole, David Niven, John Gielgud, Alexander Scourby) could enthrall audiences by reading a phone book.
