NSTLKIA presents 'The Crime Capital,' our newest documentary taking a deep dive into the brutal and bloody rise of Montreal's Rizzuto crime family, and how one Sicilian immigrant would change the city for good.
This story is a unique one, as, unlike our other stories, it takes a look at the Montreal mob today both yesterday, and today.

Excellent documentary almost rendered unwatchable by mispronunciation of Montreal. With all the research required to achieve this documentary, one would think pronouncing Montreal the right way would a top priority… Apparently not.

1:54 "Le Place Royal" Completely wrong. La Place Royale was just a spot where fur trading happened in the old port. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pointe-%C3%A0-Calli%C3%A8re_Museum This is exactly where it was. Never was the name of the city/village/island. They called it Ville Marie (Maryville) Also, it's "La" Place Royal not "Le" Place Royal. Makes me question the validity of anything else you're going to say... we're 2minutes in and you're wildly incorrect about something thats publicly available...

CORRECTION: at 35:39, The Consenza Club is in St'Leonard, not in St.Jerome. And at 50:06, Little Italy, is not in downtown Montreal, its in borough of Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie. All in all, a top-notch video. Bravo!

In english perhaps, but it's actually pronounced Monréal in french. The "t" is silent. Comes from the word "mont", if you will, in which you also forget the "t". Sounds like they pronounced a mix of both, or might just be the accent.

My father's East Ender school buddy's and later a truck driver for The Palmer Brother's Transport Company, were involved with the Montreal Mafia in the 60's,70'80's. There was three books written The Biggest Herion Connectin In Canada, The Polynesia Excursions all taken place at the Kon Tiki Lounge at the Waldorf Astoria on Hastings Steet,DTES Vancouver. Freddy Ford was car bomb,he was in VGH,two Brother's climbed to the 5th floor,a Xray Tech i worked with told me she walked in on them trying to finish the job. They sent a guy for a job,he was back to the Hotel shortly, the little man with polio beat the crap out of him,he kept a pipe and bat at his door. Raymond the oldest escaped to Australia for 10 yrs,in 81 he was shot in New Westminster Court House stairs. Doug escaped from Agassiz and was found 6 yrs later at a L.A.Golf course, and Donny the youngest not too involved died of cancer in 80. Many of children have shared story's growing up mostly unbeknownst to us,were wanting to tell our side growing up through this.

this guy i know who owned a painting and construction business, he was being shaken down by the cotroni, and he wouldn't pay them off, eventually he had no choice because these guys learned that his wife owned a hair salon, and they bought out the building and had her evicted and she lost the business. He ended up having to pay them. He said after he started paying them off they'd often send business his way so it wasn't too bad. Back then they would only go after ppl in the trades that had lucrative commercial contracts. Later when the rizzuto took over they had almost the entire construction business on lock.. they were very powerful and had contacts with politicians on municipal, provincial and some say even on the federal level in canada. They also had a lot of contacts in various police outfits.

That music throughout, that is supposed to be representative of Montreal, is a total joke (& pretty offensive as "music," period). I hung out at the 1st two & worked at the third (a mob club) ...the good old days. I do recall a young Tony DiOrio in 1969 at the Metropole ...a gorgeous, very classy looking & cool dude.

The Rizzuto pretty much supplied the whole region around the great lake and we're one of the biggest supplier for the east coast. Vito was definitely the most powerful criminal in North America. The Rizzuto still control the smuggling so they are still rolling in money. The wars only affect the money they made in Montreal and Quebec. their main bisness (exporting tons to large organizations connected to the st-laurent water ways) is still making billions a year.

I do have an issue with your take on who is responsible for all the killing. A lot of people think most of the big time hits are in revenge of the Violi's way back. I don't think it was internal strife.

Yeah I've learned a lot regarding the mafia conflict in Montreal since making this video, and if I could redo it I'd probably focus the end more on the civil war. I think the struggle between the factions is definitely an ethnic one (Calabrian vs Sicilian) dating back to the Cotroni era. At least some of it.
