I never got to meet my grandfather but I learned he was a marble sculptor in Italy. Learning about the tools and the craft has been really connecting for me- learning from the conversations I didn't get to have. This is fascinating so thank you for sharing with us. That Maltese stone is gorgeous

"Marble gives you time to think". I like that. Even with my minimal experience with masoning stone by hand, I sort of get it. You achieve a certain rythm with the mallet and chisel, so indeed a very soft stone would throw that off, whereas a harder limestone or marble allows you to work to that natural rythm without the risk of blowing out an arris or corner

Sooo good to hear your voice Charlie, and hear the journey of Maltese stone masonry, and sharing your experiences along the way. I grew up in Malta for 4 years in the late 80s/90s, and fondly remember the stone masonry of the islands. Mind you I don't miss being woken up at 7/8am each morning by the big bangs at the quarry near our house. Johnathon, from Australia

We have a quarry with this kind of stone in kefalonia too. Very beautiful stone, but not as tought to the elements as marble. The stones they use near the sea, need reshaping every few years.
