It's a flawed movie like any other but it was entertaining and enjoyable with a nice message. That's all I really look for in a movies these days where I don't have the time to be an elitist or over analyze a film like I used to. The Matrix is now an allegory of studios creating endless sequels. Analyst said it best: as long as he put Neo and Trinity close to each other but not allow them to get together, they generate unlimited energy. This is exactly what studios want: to endlessly put characters and stories in repetitive loops, but never finish the story, generating unlimited $$$. I'm sure it hurt Lana to do this film, but she was able to get the message across, and I'm sure she's enjoying some of that additional $$$ too.

I always felt the reason neo didn’t want people seeing him as the one and just a man was besides him being unsure was because if he says he’s the one they will just depend on him. Great point. I also feel like he was right as well.. he was just an anamoly.. its 6th interation.. but the difference was in the firdt five he just had a deep love of humanity.. but in the 6th, where he fell in love with Trinity.. that was the one were he "became the One" except it was Trinity's declaration of love for him, saying he had to be the One because the Oracle told her she would fall in love with the One and she loved him.. that was when Neo was RESURRECTED. So really, the One is Two, both Male and Female, not a binary choice but a continuum.. and the most beautiful moment before they went in to claim Trinity from the Matrix he told the next gen crewperson who held Trinity as a hero that she believed in him once, it was his turn to believe in her.. it was perfect!

One of the film's most important points in my view is that by engaging people's emotions you can get them to not even want to wake up from the Matrix - a 'gentler' more powerful system of control, which is why the analyst is a much more successful (and scarier) ruler than the architect.

You know, I actually find it very interesting that you referenced Metal Gear Solid because although the message Metal Gear Solid is different than the Matrix in a sense, it is still connected in some ways, and also I've heard that Hideo Kojima has some involvement with the Matrix, but I forget if it has to do with the website or the matrix video game. There is some link between the two. As Agent Smith said in the 4th film: "Stories don't really end, we've been telling the same story over and over", and I believe that although the message takes secular and religious philosophy and religions around the world and incorporates it into the film, I believe all of those things are meant to illustrate something concerning Christianity at the core, and so I believe the core message has to do with Christianity.

@@Bi0Dr01d Also Metal Gear Solid 4 was heavily criticised for it's meta themes and old snake, but it is actually my favourite in the franchise for how *final* everything is in that game. Even though we've had like 3-4 more Metal Gears since then, I'll always see MGS4 as the final chapter no matter what. I think MGS4 is the only other piece of entertainment that has addressed the whole "sequels are bad" idea before and maybe people find that kind of pretentious, but I think it's a cool concept. I got a lot of MGS2 vibes with how that game tried to confuse you and question whether or not the game was only in a virtual reality or not.

@@NewOrderOfAlexandria out of all of the Metal Gear Solid video games, the one I find the most interesting is Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake eater. It's the game that blatantly shows its connection to the supernatural. Metal Gear Solid was my favorite game of all time, but there's something wrong in it that I should point out. In the beginning of the game, it says that "the boss" defected, and when Snake met with the boss and Colonel Vogan on the bridge, the boss threw snake over the bridge into the river. The reason why that's very important is because Colonel Logan is known for his powers of electricity, which is connected to Snake's defeat from the boss which caused him to descend into the water. Luke 10:18 - And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Under this context, it would seem that "the boss" represents God, implying that the game is trying to make God into a bad guy, and that would mean "Snake" represents Satan, and since we as the audience and game players are cheering this character on, it seems to be a way of causing us to inadvertently worship the Devil. You might doubt that this character Snake is Satan, but there's more proof. Snake was supposed to rendezvous with a man code named "Adam" but instead meets with "Eva" *(Adam and Eve from The Book of Genesis of the Bible).* This is definitely a reference to the Bible and does imply Snake is The Devil. His relationship with Eva also parallels the Book of Genesis, because Satan tricked Eve to eat from the forbidden fruit, causing her to sin. Also, if you look at the Cobra Unit, these characters have Supernatural connections. You have "The Pain", "The Fear", "The End", "The Fury, and the most obvious supernatural character, "The Sorrow". The sorrow represents death, 2 Corinthians 7:8-10 ¶For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did repent: for I perceive that the same epistle hath made you sorry, though it were but for a season. 9Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing. 10For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: *but the sorrow of the world worketh death.* The sorrows character represents death itself, and the afterlife. "The fury" represent hell. The fear and the pain represents suffering and torment. The End seems to both imply an end of life and also the end of the world or biblical prophecy being fulfilled. And "the boss" being The Joy, the character who represents God. Nehemiah 8:10 - ...the joy of the LORD is your strength. The game makes God the villain and makes Satan the hero, so that we would fall in love with Satan and worship him without knowing it. This is not only the case in Metal Gear Solid alone, this seems to be a continual repeating message in all of these movies, television shows, and games we play. I had that feeling for various reasons, but then people started posting similar theories online, so I'm not alone in thinking that. I agree with what everyone's saying about the fight scene not being that good, or certain plot points weren't thoroughly explained, etc, but the movie actually responds to some of these objections within its own content, which is why I find the film interesting and why I do feel to some extent it was made the way it was on purpose.

What I see as one of the most important contributions of this film is the fact that we can talk about it. Or at least you can in some places. Much as I loved Spider-Man, the conversation around that film is largely spoilers etc. Maybe there are greater themes to talk about there, but the conversation largely isn’t going to happen. With this film I’ve already watched a few times trying to puzzle out it’s point on binaries, reboot culture, narratives. That’s worth a lot to me. Unfortunately one of the things that prevents real engagement with the film is our current tendency towards encampments, and refusal to engage with ideas we don’t agree with in a thoughtful manner.

Umm. No. You're just too trusting. This movie is simply the release of 30 years worth of guilt. You see, the Wachowskis were handed someone's script back in 1993, and it's upon that work: The Ciphermen, that they made their fame and fortune. In 2018 the writer of the stolen work put out an exposé on a con artist woman who claimed they stole from her. In it, he included the actual stolen work, and the Wachowskis saw that video (Sophia Stewart The Definitive Case Study). Their response was The Matrix Resurrections. They were enraged because up until that point no one had figured out that this con artist woman, Sophia Stewart, was created by Matrix lawyers! The new movie is basically one giant confession and middle finger at the dude they stole from.

It's more artistically innovative then just a remake of the original movie with different characters (The Force Awakens and Jurassic World) agreed. That said, it's kind of a false dichotomy (remake v. this) . Blade Runner 2049 and Mad Max: Fury Road were wonderful legacy sequels that both updated and expanded the universe of the original (without doing that lazy soft reboot process). And I think there's an amazing fourth Matrix story that could be told that wasn't ...this.

Another interesting aspect that I find beautifully expressed in the movie is the notion that even by doing something as 'legendary' and 'revolutionary' as Neo and Trinity in the original trilogy, you are just moving the needle of history forwards a tiny bit. Life goes on - humans and machines get a chance to co-exist, but that doesn't solve all problems, and may create new ones. There is never an 'ultimate victory/solution' to anything in life, it's an ongoing development.

Yea, even from the beginning the Wachowskis have said that the trilogy comments on the Hegelian dialectic. Which when I asked what that was the simple answer given was "thesis-> antithesis-> synthesis, in other words it describes the movement of ideas throughout history as contradicting ideas come into conflict and emerge into a combination of the two, which then becomes its own idea which enters into further conflict. The dialectic is the conflict and resolution between these ideas. Hegel’s conception of history was idealist (I.e. ideas are what drives history) but Marx (and others) used his schema to describe a materialist conception of history (I.e. material conditions like class conflict are what drives history)." And I feel like Matrix Ressurections ends up putting that in the clearest terms. The first story was a clear black and white Human Vs Machines. But we learn that that divide was already unclear by learning that machines started out as the oppressed group and then that certain machines like the Oracle were helping humans break free from the cycle of everyone on Zion being annihilated every 100 years to keep the Matrix as a Prison in balance. Then in Restrictions the human and machine societies have synthesized. And the competing ideas between IO and the Analysts Matrix are still there and still produce conflict but are still seen as a small step forward from what was.

After hearing only bad things about the movie, it was a must for me to watch as I rarely care about the opinion of the masses and because I like to form my own opinion. I have to admit that I was pretty divided after the movie. I had also watched parts 1 - 3 again and was therefore fully involved in the topic. Just the fact that it made me think and all the flashback moments as well as the idea that Thomas Anderson is supposed to have invented the matrix and that the matrix parts were basically just games, I think it's terrific. I think I definitely have to watch the film more often, because I liked parts 2 and 3 more and more the more I saw them. Very nice and detailed video with even more facts I have to think about.

After my 3rd watch I liked it significantly better. I still have many issues with it but mainly because there were better routes that could have been explored. I put those expectations aside and just said okay it is what it is, we are going through a old love story with different scenarios. I think they should have began the 4th movie during the machine war whilst Neo tries to reunite with Trinity after learning she’s alive. I think the meta stuff wasn’t executed properly but I think on paper the script looked solid and why Keanu and others praised it before the release.

My first feeling after watching the film was a huge sense of relief that there was still a totally unapologetic love story at its core. For me, despite all the hype about technique and philosophy was the thing that made the original trilogy so unique for an action film. I then enjoyed the layers of interpretation similar to the original, I like that the new matrix is basically social media/facebook, fills your head with noise, the Merovingian complaining of the end of civility for tweets and facebook popularity (I don't think he is talking about the social media in the new matrix, I think he is describing the new Matrix itself), the therapist saying that if he keeps people unhappy and frustrated he creates more power. It is a shame some of the original cast were not there, I hear some actors "just couldn't fit it into their schedule" which sounds like a real shame, I would have thought it was worth waiting until they could get everyone they wanted. On the whole though I loved it.

Terrific comment! However, I love Groff as Smith, and Mateen II's Morpheus is just sooo funny, compelling while honoring Fishburn's Morpheus "Uno". Hey, not that I wouldn't have loved seeing Weaving back, though a reality check is needed regarding Fishburne: the guy's "widened" a whole lot in 17 years...;-P I loved the movie so much, and really enjoyed your post's honesty. I'm just gonna lay out all my thoughts here since i already did a lot of this heavy lifting in a reply to another comment on this video. I went out thinking it was a 7, but my score has gradually gone down to a 5 since I've had time to reflect on the film and think about it all. This is going to be a long ass comment, but i have a lot to say, so anyways... To start off with: the characters. Bugs is a fucking plot device and not much else, and that's a damn shame. They could've actually done something interesting with her character, but all Lana really cared about was wanting to get Neo in Trinity's pants again so to speak, so Bugs got the shaft and was relegated to being the only driving force in the entire story after the first act, pushing Neo from set piece to set piece with no real care for his own input (which the film openly admits, the movie won't even let the audience come to that conclusion on their own; its fucking insulting to my intelligence). The only exception really out of the new/reworked cast that i thought was kinda well done is Agent Smith (i actually like what they did with him as far as repurposing his character goes), but everything else? 💩 I do like the world building done in this film, but a majority of it is ripped from the MMO, so i can't really credit this film for much of it. I'm just glad they didn't scrap their ideas. I also like the personal aspect of this film and how it ties into Lana's recent loss of her parents (its less philosophical and more so auto-biographical if that makes any sense, kind of like a Hideo Kojima game). This film is clearly a way for her to cope with their death, and I'm not gonna take that away from her. I don't think it improves the writing much, but it's still a cool aspect of the film. I don't have a problem with the idea of The Matrix doing a smaller-scale love story, but the problem I do have lies in the implications of everyone's actions in this film (that being that THIS STORY REALLY ISN'T AS SMALL SCALE AS FILM SPEAK IS TRYING TO SUGGEST). The new Matrix is destroyed now, and that pretty much means that all out war is sure to break out again between the machines and humans (except now with the help of the synthiants), and Neo and Trinity act like they don't have a fucking care in the world now, humanity be damned. They're going to go paint rainbows in the sky while humanity gets slaughtered i guess. Like, how does anyone not see an issue with that? Do they have a plan going forward on how they'll try to survive? Zion barely even survived the last war and it was only because Neo "sacrificed" himself to broker peace between the humans and machines, what makes you think Io is equipped to deal with this? If they're found, their colony is fucked. Why the fuck was it imperative that Neo and Trinity escape The Matrix? Bugs never really explains this because, again, she gets next to no character development in this film. Personally, it probably would've been more poetic had Neo and Trinity decided to stay in The Matrix together of their own volition after dealing with The Analyst if there wasn't going to be a follow-up to this film. You have to admit: THAT would've been a pretty bittersweet yet satisfying ending to The Matrix saga. Now obviously that couldn't work at all in the version of The Matrix 4 that Lana Wachowski ended up ultimately writing (due to how the massive power drawn from Neo and Trinity is based on proximity), but it could've maybe worked in a rewrite. There's more to this film than just its meta narrative and the broad strokes of its story, and THAT'S what people have a problem with. The first film understood this very well and made very carefully thought out decisions when it came to its story. Even the second film, to a lesser degree, is still pretty damn thought out when it comes to its surface level narrative, and the third (while the weakest of the three) gets to piggyback off the heavy lifting done in Reloaded and focus on the payoffs of the overarching narrative between the two films. I just can't say the same about Resurrections. Bugs was nowhere near as relevant as i thought she was going to be and has pretty much zero character development, the new Morpheus is also a glorified plot device (much like Bugs), the rest of the ship's crew are glorified filler characters who only exist to operate the ship and pull people in and out of The Matrix (they're nowhere near as fleshed out as characters like Link, Niobe, Locke or The Kid), the Architect was surprisingly incompetent (despite having such a busted ass power inside the new Matrix), and Trinity's "red pill" moment so to speak in the third act feels incredibly unprompted because the hints she's given are total ass. I can nitpick the flying scene where she catches Neo all day, but it's honestly just that: a nitpick. If that's how Lana wanted Trinity to awaken her powers or whatever, then fine. But to have it happen suddenly like that, with no suggestion before hand that she could be The One like Neo, is just blatantly awful writing. Neo didn't just start by fucking force pushing people and stopping bullets, he had to believe he could first and that took some time to accept. Trinity's was like the flip of a switch, and it feels unearned as a result. And don't get me started on the Merovingian. I could write an entire comment half as long as this about why that scene was so butchered and made zero sense for him to be there. I understand the significance of him being there from a meta-narrative perspective (he really served as a huge mouth piece for Lana in this film), but he's literally an exiled program. Isn't it dangerous for him to be there during that fight scene? I thought being Exiled means he's in hiding.

@@WareWolf831 Like i said: i thought the subtext was fine, but there's not enough actual substance in this film otherwise. Reloaded kinda had the opposite problem where i thought there wasn't enough meaningful subtext to chew on but the baseline story was pretty good. Granted, i watch films for the base story first and foremost, so i prefer Reloaded. I think its pretty decent and enjoyable to watch, and the premise behind the Architect is incredibly fascinating. This film is basically just as shallow as Revolutions, but with additional subtext. For people who watch these films only for the subtext, i can understand why they like this film, but i don't think that having ONLY good subtext makes for a good film. Even a de-constructive or heavily philosophical piece of fiction should have a good baseline plot for the audience to chew on, much like any sort of story. Parasite understood this, Metal Gear Solid 2 understood this (whereas MGS5 didn't), the Final Fantasy 7 Remake understood this, even something like Watchmen understands this. Resurrections does not get this, it's a very weak science fiction film compared to the other entries in the series, and what it does have to say in terms of subtext doesn't make up for the weak baseline story. This fourth entry in the series almost feels like a parody of a Matrix film (i've seen people bring up this point a lot), but its clearly meant to be a bona fide sequel rather than a deconstruction of the Matrix series in-universe. Lana Wachowski clearly didn't mean to parody her previous films, it's more so the opposite actually. This is undoubtedly an auto-biographical piece with pot shots at Warner Brothers and an attempt at a genuine love story between Neo and Trinity. Like Film Speak says, it was Lana's way of coping with the loss of her parents. She used The Matrix as a means of finding closure in her own life, rather than wanting to just continue the story for the story's sake.

I largely agree with you. It feels like a lot of the things done in this movie was done for the sake of doing it while ignoring a precedent already set. I do have a problem with how Trinity gains the One's powers for two reasons: they didn't have to remove powers from Neo for her to have them, and they could have easily explained how she got powers. Neo could have given her powers, he's able to manipulate the matrix. It could have been explained that because they were near each other for 60+ years she gained similar powers. But in the understanding of how Neo's powers work, it doesn't make sense that he lost the ability to fly. He's able to manipulate the code, the only factor that limits his power is his own beliefs. Why did they created a new Morpheus only to have him emulate traits of the original? Lawrence said that they didn't even invite him back, so then why not just have the person to re-ignite the One be someone different, why did it have to be Morpheus? How was Smith able to get around the bullet time but not Neo (who once again, can manipulate the matrix)? The Merovingian could have been replaced by any other character and it wouldn't have made a difference. I don't understand why they did what they did to his character, outside of showing how the wars affected him. He's no longer in favor of the machines and the humans of IO don't need him. I don't think that anyone can tell Lana how to process her grief, and that's not what I'm doing here, I just don't think this is what fans of the series who are into the lore of the Matrix want. It feels like they were stuck between a sequel and a reboot. Lots of half-assed reconning for no reason.

I loved the originals, but my expectations were tempered for a 4th. And sadly, this movie just didn't hold up. The problem is that the movie is so on the nose meta, it feels like it's looking down on me for wanting more of The Matrix. Geez, sorry I fell in love with your movies--I can understand the disdain towards the studio, but the audience is there for a movie. Also, I shouldn't need to know the directors entire life story to be able to appreciate their work. And this movie just wasn't that good. There were some good ideas, and some interesting twists. But I felt empty after watching it. Perfected the legacy sequel? I disagree. They "perfected" making a movie that critiques the notion of legacy sequels... But Lana's resentment about making one was such a dark cloud that she put into the movie that it just wasn't enjoyable. And believe me, I'm a big fan of the bigger matrix world. I'm not an action junkie, and I also thought the sequels we're a little underrated. But this was a mess... Glad other people enjoyed it. I wanted to though.

You've summed up my thoughts exactly. Everyone who calls Matrix 4 a masterpiece seems to have one thing in common, that being self-referential and parodying itself is what elevates it. It isn't, not when the message to the audience is "You're foolish for wanting to watch the thing you're watching." While I have sympathy for what the Wachowskis have gone through, it should have no bearing whatsoever on the evaluation of the movie. This is a sci-fi fantasy story, not a documentary. If you want to see self-referential done correctly, watch Cobra Kai. When they got past this part and showed how the world evolved after Revolutions, that's when I got interested. Furthermore, reviewers who sing the praises of Matrix 4 fail to address all aspects of the movie. When discussing a storytelling medium like film, you cannot only talk about the story and neglect to evaluate how effectively the medium was used. There are many aspects that add up to effective use, such as: character design, set design, color palettes, shot composition, choreography, pacing, transitions, music, sound effects, and so on. If you don't address the things which make it a movie, you may as well be talking about a book. Matrix 4 had a decent enough story to tell, but did not have the complete package like the originals.

I know that's not the point of these films, but it's absolutely ingrained in the previous trilogy, so I really missed it here. But again, I agree that this film works, especially because it follows directly what happened in Revolutions. Personally, I'm gonna rewatch this on Wednesday at the cinema, aa it should be.

I liked the film. I liked that it subverted the fanboy expectations. It was a red pill meta commetary on a few subjects, the hollywood machine, the expectations of audiences, and nostalgia. I also appreciate that this was Lana's cathartic creation to help her cope with a familial tragedy. Resurrections is not an attempt to start more sequels. It is a thoughful epilogue to the trilogy, and gives us a nice peek into the aftermath of Neo's sacrifice. Neo and Trinity are now ONE.

I just now finished it and I gotta admit it was a decent movie and it wasn't all bad like the mainstream audience said about it. These days I judge the movie after I finish watching it and I form my own opinion. It was interesting because the psychologist resurrected neo and it was an all new take on the matrix story after the death of neo and the resurrections of the matrix and neo in general. I do hope there is a 5th one and maybe in the next one neo and trinity become mentors to the next ones that become the main heros but it's just an idea.

I think the 4th movie accurately expresses the current condition of humanity in the modern world, or at the very least in the western world. While most people like to think that they care about things such as truth, facts, evidence, freedom, liberty, morality and so on --- their actions and inactions in the world, seem to prove that all they truly care about, is how they feel and what they believe. We live in a world where fear, hatred, outrage, war, authoritarianism, etc are praised -- and those who do not want those things, are condemned. Humanity is in a phase of destruction and self destruction, not so much by guns, or bombs, or anything we might think of in the more traditional sense -- but rather, an increasing decline in maturity and mental health, as nihilism and hopelessness mixed with virtue signaling has become the standard. While in the long run, the human species may yet prevail -- in the short run, society is collapsing and that collapse will climax. I couldn't tell you the year or the month or the day, or the specifics of exactly what they will look like, only that it is obvious that it is well under way, and proceeding exponentially. Or as John Connor said at the end of Terminator Salvation, paraphrased -- judgment day was not something that could be stopped, the only thing we can do is survive it, and try to create a better world on the other side of it.

@@le_maxarus Why? Sure, the Whachowskis did not want a sequel to the trilogy. But when Lana got trust into the situation, she flowed like water. She choose to tell a story she wanted to tell if there must be another Matrix, instead of stepping aside and watch the studio silently suffocating her baby. When Valhalla calls, you answer and fight... that spark, that grind... isn't that what life all about? When Zion was free, Morpheus believed there work is done... yet the machine civil war sealed his fate... the work is never done. You can't stop as long as you breathe as life has the nasty habit of creeping up on you. If how hyped I am from seeing the film yesterday is any indication of where Lana is at after making it, she might be up for it. But that is her choice, and we will have to trust that. And be grateful for whatever ammo she and anyone with an impact on our life throw our way to push on with our own journey.

So it's good because it's "meta" and "different" and has "themes"? Nevermind the uninteresting characters, really underwhelming action, cringey moments and dialogue, plot with no real stakes, the cheap made for TV look of the film, dreadful pacing and bloated runtime, bad wire effects, neo's action being reduced to pushing bubbles for 15 minutes, unbelievably lame girl power ending with a final scene played for comedy and that God awful RATM cover. I agree but I would extend it because she criticizes many relevant things from internet troll comments (Swarm mode) to how capitalism is endlessly adaptable and can even cash in on the things that criticize it (they took all that you achieved and turned it into something as trivial as a video game). A little over three years ago, some obscure channel posted a video which might have caused all of this. Seek out Milton Killer's Matrix Easter Eggs and follow the video links. You have to pay attention and read stuff, though. There's a video with a Larry Wachowski confession and another one debunking a fake victim. Watch the latter first, and you could be looking at what got under Larry Wachowski's skin, causing him to #^+@ up big time with this choler fueled personal statement called Matrix Resurrections. There's nothing worse than an emperor with no clothes, challenged to prove itself -- publicly!

It reminds me in that regard on the third season of Twin Peaks. Lynch has been pressured for 25 years to follow up and give closure. When he did, he did it on his terms. Not giving the Twin Peaks of old, but a changed one. A Twin Peaks that reminds us of the old one, but doesn't use it's nostalgia to comfort us, but to take us on a new journey - and it doesn't care if we like it or not. Lynch just continued the Story the way he needed to do, without intervention of the studios. I have to say that I don't know if I like Matrix 4 so far. I don't dislike it. I can clearly see that it is not a cash grab, but an attempt to continue the series in a unique and personal way. I just don't know if I get the message it's trying to send out. Maybe I need more time.

The Sheeple always want the same Herculean story fed to them over and over again, even if it means sacrificing creative freedom and creating something new. This movie is an allegory to that very concept. Emotional manipulation, childhood egotism. We as human beings live vicariously through our experiences, we imagine ourselves as the characters on an unconscious level. This is the emotional construct that so many movies emulate to control our emotions; in reality there is very little substance in nearly every modern production. I had a revelation whilist drinking two Steel Reserves 211's and watching the Chronicles of Riddick reboot. Why was I enjoying this movie? Simply put, I came to the realization that it was because I saw myself as Riddick himself and was vicariously living through the experience and thereof the excitement of being Riddick himself. Only to realize, that this is a mental construct and has little to do with reality. People go to the movies to experience a sense of escapism from reality, to live vicariously through characters such as John Wick as if they would've taken the same actions as he did in that given situation. The audience projects themselves onto the character as if they were TRULY living out the fiction they are experiencing. This is why the hero's tale has become an expectation; our childhood egos search for that affirmation even though we ourselves have become disillusioned as adults. We long for a return to our childhood selves and the fairytales that are all too familiar. So in a sense, you can logically argue that The Matrix Resurrections is a bad movie by those standards. It fails to provide an immersive escapism into fantasy. Instead it does the lateral opposite, it offers you the Red Pill. It offers you the human experience of being the observer of something greater. It gives you the human experience and a hopeful ending that summarizes what it means to be human. Creativity, to think and grow outside of your boundaries. The universal force of gravity which we call love... At first I was disappointed in the final sequence. I had expected a final anime-esque battle between good VS evil; instead I got something unexpected and refreshing. This at first, left me feeling disappointed that it was the final act to The Matrix. The final boss was against a cold lifeless machine, a helicopter flown by a pilot that lacked any free will. However, I realized the true beauty of the message. The more time goes by after I watched the film, the more I've grown to appreciate it and its beautiful ending. I've been searching for ways to contact Lana to express my gratitude and the inspiration the film has brought in my personal life as a creative force. Poetically enough, she has no social media account that I could find and I can only hope this message can somehow reach her.

In the end, a movie has to work on many levels, not just an intellectual one. That‘s the reason it lost me very early on. I got the meta-stuff, but I just didn‘t care. No. You can give this same speech, exactly the same for reloaded and/or revelations. This did not have to be retold. Times, technology and arcance/outdated views will ALWAYS change generationally. A good story for me would have been the glossed over story about how the lack of resources caused infighting among the machines. How Neo kept failing at his reboot and the revelation of the need for Trinity. How the machines formed alliances with the humans. How Sati's parents were mislead which lead to their purge. I mean, points for saying it with a straight face, but the original is a big story about the most important journey a person can take. This movie is a small story about a pointless journey in that context. I hope you got paid well to say such nice things about this movie. If you truly believe what you've said then I invite you to re-watch the original. Forget the action, it's fine and even groundbreaking for the time, but consider the philosophical implications. The scenario laid out in the matrix isn't necessarily true, but you can't prove it's not. It's Cartesian doubt and the central idea from Zen. The ultimate truth, whether we spend a single second of our lives considering it or not. What do we really know for sure. Compare that to the philosophy apparent in this movie. In a word, it's terrestrial. I will say that it was intriguing for a while. There was some courage present in the way he began to doubt and challenge his reality, but this quickly gave way to a cheap facsimile of the original.

​When people heard there was a new Matrix movie coming, they were reminded of the feeling they got watching the unique original, and expected two decades worth of progress in visual effects, and perhaps the maturation of the creators of the original movie, to present something spectacular, or at the very least, making some form of progress. This new movie serves only as confession. It proves the writer had nothing to do with the success of that original movie. Firstly, right off the bat, we are introduced to a concept relegating the original trilogy to nothing more than a video game! Of all the contemptuous things to do, this was the worst choice. Remember a decade or so back when VR and AAA video games were a fad? People expected that some time soon, games would mimic movies: that you would be able to choose how to navigate through a movie level narrative. That didn't quite pan out. Video games proved to be a separate genre, despised even by connoisseurs of cinema. The two mediums are completely incompatible and deliver different highs and responses. Games are forgettable mishmashes of the latest gaudy CG graphics, exploiting visual effects to the point of irrelevance. That the writer of the fourth Matrix movie relegated the original in the prescribed way is tantamount to disowning it, and why would they do that? Moving on, we were taken directly out of the so-called narrative to be told that Thomas Anderson was in a dispute with the studio over who wrote which line! Then we are told that the studio threatened to continue the story without the writers! Why? Why take this odd path? These are manifestations of the writer's subconscious thoughts. If it was just a random choice, it wouldn't have been augmented by The Merovingian's cameo, which we will get to in a moment. At this point, it seems as though the writer is distancing himself from the originals. It's almost preparing the audience to accept the shoddy craftsmanship to come - explaining clearly that the original was based on the work of someone else. We get some insight into this from the comments of Andy Wachowski, who excused himself from proceedings, citing commitments to another project at the time (2019). Andy Wachowski publicly stated that he hopes this new movie would be better than the original! Hmm. Really? Why? Wasn't the original movie his most successful enterprise? Why would he believe that what we got in 2021 could be better than the original Matrix? Lo and behold, prompting a cruddy fight sequence, The Merovingian shows up, looking down on his luck (from the writer's perspective), frothing at the mouth about something. Uncanny it is. He's complaining about having his unfinished work squandered! Are you starting to get the picture here? Now, some people believe the movie is a tongue in cheek middle finger at Warner Brothers. They couldn't be more deluded. There's no way on earth that Warner Brothers would allow it. They are aware that this attitude was directed toward an individual. Warner Brothers, in the movie, alongside The Merovingian, represents the person whose stolen work made The Wachowski's fame and fortune. How can we determine this? Well... if you pay attention to the marquee slide scene, when "Bugs" negotiates a sign reading: "Anderson's," you get a glimpse into what the writer is actually thinking. The sign reads: "Anderson's" and is subtitled: "For all those who eat shit." "Eat shit" is highlighted in bold. Does this sound like a middle finger at Warner Brothers to you? We have: 1) A writer named "Anderson" discussing which lines belonged to whom 1a) An excuse about having to do a fourth movie, because the story would be continued one way or another 2) A hidden message: "Anderson's" and the barb: "Eat shit!" 3) A cameo of an old character who looks like he's been doing just that, complaining about having his work squandered. This is a repost. After reading how easily swayed you were, I felt it my duty to open your eyes a little.

The point I am making is that shameless plagiarism of an unprotected work, as opposed to inspiration from established publications, is both wrong, and proof that the writer of the new movie has zero talent and no right at all to be making these movies. Thr process to make a film with some studios who just want to milk your franchise is difficult. They were gonna make this sequel with or without the original writer, director and actors. Man, I've been bingeing your videos and I absolutely love your general positivity and differing POV. You gave me a new appreciation for ASM 2, Dark Knight Rises, etc. I can't get onboard with this one. Matrix Resurrections knows what it wants to be, but falls prey to its' own meta. It has some very big and very clever ideas, but I felt like it fell very short in the execution. The action scenes were a frenetic mess and lacked the style of the originals in a way that felt more like the result of a limited budget than a bold new direction. It had some clever moments, but nothing close to what came before. I'm interested to hear your take, but I don't think I'm going to be changing my mind.

This version of the matrix is the 7th version the number 7 is a very spiritual number. In Hinduism and Bhuddishm it is believed that there are 6-9 realms or realities. Each plane with its own set of laws and conditions. Since the matrix films are an allegory for the existence of consciousness within the perception of humans it’s plausible to believe that the real world is a simulation that operates independently within its own boundaries but fundamentally it is part of a cycle of domains. In hermetics the second universal law is that of correspondence - as above so below. Just like reincarnation and karma. What you do in this life affects what you become or what you do in the next life. The matrix and the real world represent the lower dimensions of reality i.e. hell, this correlates to the first three lower chakras: root chakra, sacral and solar plexus. Neo and trinity together represent the fourth chakra which is the heart chakra. Coincidence as this is the fourth movie. Number four also represents time, the fourth dimension. This is why in resurrections we see many cuts and flashbacks to the original trilogy, this represents the past. The 7th version of the matrix takes place in the modern day 21st century (present) and when Neo wakes up in the real world he learns that 60 years have past since he saved Zion (future). If you decode the matrix mathematically you see how intricate, metaphysical, profound and revealing each movie truly is and how transcendental the franchise is as a whole because it subverts expectations and challenges you to question your own existence and perception of reality. If you consider each movie in sequence then you see how each feature serves its purpose flawlessly. The first movie represents the number one: meaning perfection, originality, creation. This is why everyone loved the original film the most. It’s pedigree is undeniable, it will never be replicated or surpassed. There will never ever be a better matrix film then the first film. It is the one and only exception. The number two represents duality, instability, complication, again most people loathe matrix reloaded because it’s the middle chapter, it has no beginning nor end. The third film represents resolution, cohesion, finality. Metaphorically if the first film is “birth” second one is “life” then the third represents “death”. Just as easy as - 1,2,3. Resurrections represents four, meaning time, fourth dimension, quantum entanglement, multiverse, system & order, versatility, multiprocessing (neo running a module, subroutine within the matrix), repetition, four also represents a sequence. Like making a beat - and a one and a two and a three and four!” Just some food for thought.

The first Matrix film was spectacular in a lot of ways but wasn't everyone's cup of tea. Many were drawn by the effects and action but not particularly by its philosophical underpinnings. It took years of discourse and undeniable influence to cement its reputation. Reloaded and Revolutions had their fair share of hate, dislike and dissatisfaction. Interestingly, they seem to sit comfortably well today than they did before. The wow factor has mostly been the top selling aspect of The Matrix films despite the fact that there's more meat to them, which understandably, has its dedicated fanbase or 'devotees'. Resurrection feels familiar yet different in interesting ways. With all that massive hate or dislike, I have the feeling many are going to have to eat their hats--especially upon further consideration or potential sequel that sheds more light on the creative choices or direction.

There was some cool new ideas but the main thing that stuck out like a sore thumb for me was the action. There is not one memorable action sequence in this entire movie that comes close to anything in the other movies. You got the lobby scene in the first one, the great hall and highway scene in Reloaded, and the defense of Zion and the great Neo vs Smith fight at the end of Revolutions. Name one scene from Resurrections that comes close. The action was a bunch of quick cuts and you could barely tell what was happening.

I’d say the most memorable action scene was the swarm towards the end. But I enjoyed it all. The suits chasing Bugs at the beginning, the reintroduction of Smith and Neo, their little sequence in the abandoned building, the Tokyo train, the swarm. There was a lot of memorable action moments. The reason that they don’t feel as impactful is because Lana put more emphasis on the story she was telling by alleviating the danger by not killing off any of the new crew. She even poked fun by giving the line of dialogue between the two new crew members. They talked about how during Neo’s quest to save Zion that he got almost all of his crew members killed and finished it off with “yeah, we’re definitely gonna die” or something to that effect. Also stylistically they shot the action differently. The cameras were not still long shots like the original Trilogy, but that’s not a problem seeing as the tone of this movie was very different.

What are you even talking about. You haven’t understood the movies if you believe Resurrections makes more philosophical points than Reloaded. Reloaded was the single most philosophical out of all of them. Resurrections confuses modern left wing identity politics with philosophy. Reloaded was about causality, the illusion of free will and the philosophical deconstruction of prophecy, good & evil and multi-layered meaning. The scenes with the merovingian, the oracle and architect flew right over people’s heads and still to this day the *vast* majority people don’t seem to understand what’s going on in Matrix II. This movie, Resurrections, lacked all the subtlety that made things in the trilogy interesting. People with specific life experiences and knowledge of philosophical and scientific concepts loved the subtlety, they loved hearing the architect or the Merovingian talk about these concepts while others didn’t even have the awareness span required to listen. And even if they did listen to most it would as new morpheus so eloquently put it just be a bunch of “blah, blah, blah”. Resurrections is in your face about everything. Since people in our world still don’t understand anything about science, their own conscious experience and the nature of things, now Warner Bros. feel like they have to remind you directly, three times in the movie that there’s no choice. In the old trilogy they were MUCH more clever and subtle about these kinds of things. This movie is a fuck you to everyone, including to people like you who just “love to eat shit”. This movie is the cheapest version of the Matrix by far and when it comes to EVERY aspect. As someone who understands consciousness and the most relevant philosophical and naturalistic concepts I don’t want someone to wave their finger and explain things that shouldn’t even be explained to someone who already understands anyways. I loved the “hidden” symbols, the subtlety and the paradoxical opposition of inner and outer world, the metaphorical explanations for the properties of consciousness, the debate of causality vs. free agency and the fact that these concepts are so differentiated that even if they are resolved people don’t really get it if they don’t get it. I watched the trilogy many many many times until I got most of what was going on. It took me watching Resurrections twice to get everything and I still watched it 3 more times just because I wanted to like the movie. All I experienced was more annoyance with the way it is blatantly written, the meta comedy and the butchering of Morpheus, Smith & Neo as well as the general butchering of one of the most iconic franchises ever.

I absolutely loved Resurrections, and I was the only one amongst my friends (faithful followers) who couldn't get enough of the movie! I was baffled by my friend's responses to this story being a "let down." This movie was a beautiful understanding of things in our lives repeat. I'm not simply talking about events outside of ourselves, but our own stories about who we are. This movie pointed to the freedom that we all possess if we can see beyond our repetitions, our stories within stories. I want to Thank you from the depth of my heart for expressing your wisdom, love, and clarity about this incredible work of art! And of course, people aren't going to appreciate it because it points in a direction that questions our entrenched cultural stories about who we are and what we're supposed to be like. We innocently look in the mirror and see someone or a familiar story, when really what's revealed is a thought; a temporary fleeting moment of energy moving and flowing, changing and shifting at indescribable amounts of speed. We should dance more mentally and play in the imagination of life versus believing that there's a single understanding that is perfect for everyone. We are the One.

It's good to see a film critique that places the film studied in a larger and more mature framework. As a young person, Lana Wachowski would have known all the French cinema that was movies about making movies (particularly Godard and Truffaut). As artists, neither Wachowski would have enjoyed a studio's hints that they were going to capitalize on the Matrix brand with or without them. So what we get is a reflection on the Wachowski's position within the film industry, which has been bumpy (Cloud Atlas, a beautiful film, was not appreciated, and Sense 8, a unique and beautiful reflection on our global community and the core problem of predatory life, was cancelled). Of course she would bring those issues and the more personal ones connected with her parents' passing into the film. Turning Agent Smith into a producer is perfect. I guess it will take average viewers some time to read all of the elements packed into the thing - or not - which is to be understood in a viewing environment where we move from superheroes to the supernatural without spending much time on our actual position in the metaverse of characterizations, plot structures and memes swirling around us and choking out questions that might one time have been understood as "eternal". Thanks for raising some of the deeper things happening in the work.

This was not a great film experience for me. It honestly felt like a fan fiction screen play. Nobody dies, so upon replay there’s absolutely zero tension or risk. And suddenly Keanu Reeves isn’t capable of holding a gun? There was so much firearm foreplay in the first film, and here they have John Wick at their disposal and all he can do is force push? Just wow. Don’t tell me you weren’t missing Lawrence Fishburn and Hugo Weaving. What they attempted in those two actors’ absence was so weak. Thomas’s development partner TRIES to deliver a few Agent Smith/ Hugo Weaving lines with such weak results they literally have to flash Hugo lip syncing even as the guy is talking. Btw what happened to the story line of that character? He just leaves the screen? Nearly all of the crew are cookie cutter and forgettable. I STILL can picture in my mind TWENTY years later Tank zapping Cypher for killing his brother Dozer and spits on his corpse. I can still see Switch and Apoc collapsing when they’re fatally unplugged.. and I can picture mouse “the digital pimp hard at work” trying to sell Neo time with the simulated woman in the red dress while they all slurp down amino acid goop. What character development was there with any of the new crew of this film. Was there any? The new partnership between the human city IO and the machines was a great idea and the best new element of this fourth film, but Niobe’s character was uninteresting, poorly acted and underwhelming in my opinion. Btw “channeling a catharsis into a story” isn’t in itself a good thing. Lana had a responsibility to Matrix Trilogy FANS. Instead she chose to write her diary onto the cinematic screen. While it’s valid in its own right, it’s completely unsatisfactory for the vast majority us who LOVE the Matrix story and did such a disservice to our favorite characters. I loved the idea of Trinity being the “other one”, but she had literally so little time with any powers or action in this film, she was wayyy more of a Bada$$ in the first two films without the powers of The One! What a letdown! Imagine if we had gotten even a third of the film with Trinity being completely unstoppable. Yes please. This film needed way more development and should’ve been made in 2010. What a letdown! Personally I intend to pretend it doesn’t exist and continue to watch the trilogy and let the story end there in my mind. Where it absolutely should have. 3/10 for me.

You're right, they could have done so much more with Trinity, but think about it, they could have done a lot more with Neo as well. Could you imagine if he would have gone through a few downloads of Kung fu and gun mechanics? And then brought in Trinity to be his anchor, like in the first movie? Neo could have redeveloped his powers and then taught Trinity how to wield them in some kind of training, where she could have been a natural badass as she was in the first 3 movies. The point is, they had John Wick and Neo and they did nothing in this film, and the reason for that is quite simple, if they had, everyone would be talking about it, and the bullshit they wanted to empress on the public would have been lost. So no fight scenes of any caliber and only a carbon copy of Morpheus. Like everything in our world today, they want to take the testosterone out of it. That is why even the love scenes are not as moving as the ones in the first 3 movies.

As a fan of all three originals (1 & 2 the most), I really loved this film. It appeals to me. It's as good as a Matrix sequel could ever be, if it wants to remain faithful to the original three. It won't appeal to the average filmgoer. It can't. Nor should it have to. We don't want a world full of vanilla ice-cream. We want a variety of flavours. The one reason why McDonalds is so universally popular is because its flavours are as bland as possible, so that it doesn't offend anyone's tastebuds. Movies shouldn't be made to appeal to the lowest common denominator like McDonalds or vanilla ice cream. The Matrix Resurrections is an acquired taste. But for those who have a taste for it, it's a sweet, sweet meal!

Problems with The Matrix Resurrections: - Story was not interesting at all - Dialog was terrible and very cringe at times. - Fight choreography was terrible (You know you have a problem when Cobra Kai has better fight choreography than the Matrix).

Thank you for this! I know that movies get repackaged many times, in a "money grab", as you said. But I did not feel that way with this movie. Looking at all the negative reviews it has received, I feel disheartened that maybe a lot of people did not approach with an open mind. I appreciate your positive approach, and wish more movie reviewers would try to remain a bit more positive.

I approached the movie with an open mind 5 times already. There are some cool ideas but I can’t get myself to say the movie is good when it’s petty existence makes my head ache. Everything that made the old trilogy great was either completely missing or changed for the worse in M.IV. There was no cool action, no well-made combat scenes, neo just spams “expelliarmus”, the cgi looks much worse than 22 years ago, smith&morpheus are parodies of the original and the meta comedy just gets more annoying the more often you watch it. The ending sucks ass, many things don’t make a whole lot of sense which is painful considering how well thought-through the originals were. Resurrections itself tells you in the opening act that it was made “for those who love to eat shit” and personally I’m not a huge fan of shit.

This version of the matrix is the 7th version the number 7 is a very spiritual number. In Hinduism and Bhuddishm it is believed that there are 6-9 realms or realities. Each plane with its own set of laws and conditions. Since the matrix films are an allegory for the existence of consciousness within the perception of humans it’s plausible to believe that the real world is a simulation that operates independently within its own boundaries but fundamentally it is part of a cycle of domains. If you decode the matrix mathematically you see how intricate, metaphysical, profound and revealing each movie truly is and how transcendental the franchise is as a whole because it subverts expectations and challenges you to question your own existence and perception of reality. If you consider each movie in sequence then you see how each feature serves its purpose flawlessly. The first movie represents the number one: meaning perfection, originality, creation. This is why everyone loved the original film the most. It’s pedigree is undeniable, it will never be replicated or surpassed. There will never ever be a better matrix film then the first film. It is the one and only exception. The number two represents duality, instability, complication, again most people loathe matrix reloaded because it’s the middle chapter, it has no beginning nor end. The third film represents resolution, cohesion, finality. Metaphorically if the first film is “birth” second one is “life” then the third represents “death”. Just as easy as - 1,2,3. Resurrections represents four, meaning time, fourth dimension, quantum entanglement, multiverse, system & order, versatility, multiprocessing (neo running a module, subroutine within the matrix), repetition, four also represents a sequence. Like making a beat - and a one and a two and a three and four!” Just some food for thought.
