MLB is changing the schedule format next year. Starting in 2025, teams will play their designated rival six times instead of four times (two series of three games, home and away). As a result of this, they will be playing only two four-game series against teams in the same league outside of their division. So the new format is: Games against division rivals: 4 × 13 = 52 Games against teams in the same league but different divisions: 10 × 6 + 2 = 62 Games against opposite league teams (excluding designated rival): 14 × 3 = 42 Games against designated rival: 1 × 6 = 6 52 + 62 + 42 + 6 = 162

Notably, under the new balanced schedule, teams play at each interleague ballpark every other year, meaning the Jays play at Wrigley Field in even number years and at Dodger Stadium in odd number years. Also the Jays-Phillies rivalry has three major components: spring training facilities within 10 miles from each other, the 1993 World Series, and the Roy Halladay connection (he played for both teams and no one else). The other “odd” pair of interleague rivals in the east is the Braves-Red Sox aka the “Boston then and now” series.

I actually liked when AL teams would only play AL teams & NL teams only play NL teams. I also preferred when the playoffs were more exclusive. I understand why the Leagues started inter league play, but that’s just my preference

It’s a shame that they don’t play game 163’s and beyond if necessary anymore. There could have been 2 extra games needed to break the tie between the braves mets and dbacks this time around. 😢

Do the 4 game series alternate within division every year… so Boston and Tampa play a 4 game set in Toronto NEXT year… how does it work for the other American divisions

La Liga and Premier League are actually way less complicated. Every team plays every other team twice; once at home and once away.
