Ellen Wu, author of The Color of Success, discusses the latest Supreme Court decision that has effectively eliminated the use of affirmative action in college admissions. In a live interview on Twitch, Wu explains how the persistence of the 'model minority' myth has minimized the role racism plays in the persistent struggles of non-Asian minority groups - especially black Americans, and how it was the primary tool in dismantling affirmative action.

"Pragmatic" may sound reasonable, but ultimately it doesn't matter because the plan for 2024 is to oppose anything that is associated with Black and Brown people. Unfortunately, Black people are just the beginning. With a potential Republican President and Congressional supermajority, the 6/3 Supreme Court could dismantle Social Security, Medicare, the Civil Rights Act, and Public Education.

First off that Asian American student lawsuit did repeatedly go after Legacy Admissions citing it was a bigger issue than AA However most Asian Americans supported Affirmative Action So these students who filed the lawsuit, did not speak for the majority of Asians Secondly this is such a fake narrative like Asians Americans didn’t know that they were discriminated against. They just kept their mouths shut about it all along and no court decision will change that In American society where even with the far left bleeding heart snow ;flak(es). It’s okay to be racist against Asians Is it too much to ask that your application is not immediately placed in a pile of people lacking honesty, integrity, kindness, empathy etc Without even meeting the student Where the Harvard defence is yes we discriminate but it wasn’t statistically significant because the Asian American students who did eventually make it to the Alumni interview process did as well as anyone else on personality scores so no discrimination

Asians were put in camps during WW2 and discriminated against as much as blacks since WW2. The first drug laws were introduced to target Asians because they were taking white peoples' jobs. And blacks have had 70 years of favourable discrimination in every area, they have one of the political parties in their back pocket and basically dictate who wins their Primary and becomes the candidate. Unless you lived through slavery or segregation it doesn't impact you in any way whatsoever, it just enabled you to be a victim based on lies. FYI, black people started slavery. They were the ones who kidnapped their fellow blacks and sold them to the west. Black Africans fought tooth and nail to keep slavery when the west ended it in the 19th century. And slavery still exists in Africa today. Also, blacks today benefit from slavery as much as white people, if not more (given that they absorb more welfare and do less of the work to maintain society), given that they use the same infrastructure and wealth that slavery supposedly built.

Well I learned about this in my undergrad studies so I don’t remember everything but it’s true Asians have higher test scores and they have less crime rate but their story doesn’t end there. Asian minority groups overall struggle with unreported mental health issues such as depressions that contributes to high suicidal rate (e.g South Korea). The main reason is due to their own culture since seeking help for mental illnesses is severely stigmatized in most Asian communities. Besides that, the vast majority of Asian population do not live the life as the so-called model Asians that are smart and making a lot of money. Hope this helps somewhat.

Could we plz stop trying to compare other minorities' struggles in America with the Black American experience? No other minority experienced what we experienced and still continue to experience, period. Not to mention if these other minorities were treated so badly here like they claim, they could always pack up and go home. Black Americans never had that option. The vast majority of these minority groups are here in large numbers due to Black Americans. Without the Civil Rights Era we would never have had immigration reform in the 1960s. But sadly, even with that said, these same beneficiaries still insisted on batting for team white supremacy, only until after team white supremacy started to target them, henceforth, the Anti-Asian crime bill. Let's talk about Affirmative Action. Affrimative Action benefitted white women the most while Black Americans benefitted the least. Asians benefitted greatly from Affirmative Action (along with Civil Rights legislation) from the very beginning but no one wants to talk about that. And because of their anti Black American hatred they sided with a white supremacist to target Affirmative Action thinking it was gonna hurt Black Americans who they thought were undeserving of their spots in college, only to really shoot themselves in the foot as we are now starting to see with Affirmative Action dismantled, they are now back at square one with no real progress whatsoever. Who will they blame now? Minorities need to educate themselves on American history before they start to run out and back WS to take away programs that actually benefit them. Black Americans have been disenfranchised from day one and are expected to put on their non existent "boot straps" and go compete with ppl who have had a huge headstart while being at the very bottom of the eco-socio- political ladder. That's pure insanity. And that's why *#Reparations* are long overdue and are in order.

lets get this clear. asians are not a monolithic homogenous population, at least not when it comes to outcomes of success. proveyors of the model minority myth like to point to "collective cultural values" as a reason for why asians work so hard and achieve so much, but there are no such values in existence. confucianism does include values of discipline and work ethic, but those values have never pointed to any kind of historical socioeconomic achievement. and even if it did, it wouldn't matter, because we don't live in a meritocracy. so really, these asians fighting against this are shooting themselves in the foot because their real enemy is in fact, what they are perpetuating, aka the model minority myth, and how THAT is what wedges them underneath all racial discourse in america for the pursuit of the "american dream", THAT is what makes them invisible, and THAT is what erases the true struggle of asian immigrants in this country as they've been fighting to be seen as real americans for centuries. people who aren't asian don't understand that asians hate this debate because they think it decenters their voices and places them on black and brown people instead. they think their racial struggle isn't talked about enough. and it isn't. liberals are only interested in black vs white, which brings more asians into the conservative sphere. ive spent many days on online asian spaces trying to understand why asians love being the model minority so much. another reason no one talks about is how many asian immigrants came here in the aftermath of political proxy wars, which ended in the dominance of capitalism and democracy, two values/systems which these asian immigrants hold onto for dear life and thus, believe they thrive under, making them uphold their status as the model minority to an even greater extent due to its implication of minority achievement only being possible under american capitalism. american exceptionalism is pushed by the greater political forces, war, uprooting, poverty, and occupation. affirmative action is a policy that is viewed as a fake political stunt. "that is not "real" struggle compared to what my family faced in my homeland". -every asian immigrant ever. asians and other immigrants view america as a place where their sense of belonging doesn't need to come from their identity, because the beauty of america is that anyone can make it. america integrates people naturally. no matter where you're from. this is the bs they tell themselves to justify their supposed "neutrality" on social justice. "race doesn't matter" then why are you talking about how being asian hurts you kevin?????? you see this blatant hypocrisy and think maybe its actually the so called "apolitical" asians who are actually the most agenda seeking. this kind of asian knows he's not the type to be trapping ABGs and hosting rave parties, and so he tries to compensate by getting into politics. the clowns that you see supporting the dismantling of this historical policy are simply a product of their overobsessed tiger moms and strict stoic asian dads. because obviously, asian stereotypes like these are just "subtle asian traits" that conveniently reduce the history of asian american identity in this country down to simplistic, shallow ideas that even a child can understand. TLDR: bsffr asians. you guys don't care about your own community and you never have. you guys are so far removed from white people while emulating the same energy as them. use your brain vivian, just for a second

I'm half Chinese American half African American. What i see as the big difference that Americans don't really consider is slavery and then Jim Crow, and then being a minority with that legacy is in no way comparable to the Asian and even African immigrant experience. My Chinese side was poor when they came from Southern China. But there were no structural barriers keeping them down for generations in this country. Yes i know the Chinese Exclusion act. But Black people were systematically oppressed by the government until the 1960s. Another big difference between AAs and immigrants is the severing of culture due to the slave trade. Immigrants come here willingly and with their identities intact. Values are passed down from the old country. We tend to underestimate how much that means to the self. Asians and even African immigrants like my mother in-law don't have that baggage of being persecuted in America. Marrying White people and assimilating is the goal(this will strike a nerve but i see it with my own two eyes. Most Asian American women marry White guys). They aren't controversial and don't have the baggage, and strive to succeed. The model minority. And yes my wife is half African Black, half White. Don't get me wrong, i love and respect both sides of my family and i speak Canto. But there really is no comparison to the immigrant experience vs. the Black American experience.

Japanese Americans were put into concentration camps. Chinese Americans were routinely lynched and many towns on the West Coast made it unsafe for Asian Americans to even step foot outside after sunset (sunset-towns). What are you talking about? The experiences can be compared and should be compared to the extent that both suffered not only violence but also subjugation by their country. It's not like the Black American experience today is even uniform, affirmative action was benefiting rich African Americans at the expense of poor minorities and even poor white people. That is fucked up and proof that it was not being implemented with any sort of idea to help those out with less opportunities and those that have experienced systemic racism (which do obviously overlap for minorities in particular).

I also believe a cause for the shift in the perception of Asians in America starting in 1940's that they do not discuss is the significant fact that WW2, Korea, and Vietnam Wars pierced the stereotype of Asians as inferior. That white America (specifically the servicemen of those wars) had developed a grudging respect for the Japanese, Chinese, Koreans and Vietnamese they fought. Now of course, they most definitely still harbored racist notions that linger to today, but I believe there is a difference between the typical white supremacy/non-white inferiority narrative of pre-WW2 to I hate them because they killed my friend or they bombed Pearl Harbor. ex. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2bEe4SNd757l6Msi=iLbCF_LHbiAqM41T&t=15 I know it may just seem a different 'flavor' of racism but I think it does serve to mark a difference between anti-black racism and anti-Asian racism of today. Especially as many of the alt-right push the "Roof Top Korean" narrative as a way to enforce the model minority myth and divide Asian and Black communities.

I don’t think the majority of Americans; especially white Americans, have any idea what affirmative action is about. The goal should be for ALL of us to be valued, accepted, welcomed, to feel a part of the whole, and to at least be on equal ground as a starting point. What we do with that as individuals is up to us. People’s place in the world isn’t taken away when others join us.

I’m sure you guys aren’t trying to use an Asian face for your agenda/narrative at all, unlike Edward Blum. This case was about Harvard and uncle chapel hill discrimination against Asians. Why was so little time spent on this topic in a video that claimed to cover this topic? Also, if a kid is good enough to go to Harvard, and wants to go to Harvard, then they should go to Harvard no? Is Dr. Wu effectively telling a qualified candidate to be happy with their place , if they were indeed discriminated against?

The entire situation, in and of itself, (specifically the lawsuit ) is a perfect example or white privilege at work. The choice of a lawyer representing that race in defense of a yt person is an example of racism as well. Its an intentional choice and conscious effort to essentially say how could it be racist if my lawyer is of a diff. Race? Excessive efforts at " wokeness" is substantial ,yet, subtle racism. Or another EX. something like a yt person claiming they don't " see color " and trying to prove that by *claiming* the one black person they know. Feeling the need to convince others ur not a bigot is the No. Telltale sign of the subconscious/unconscious racism I mentioned above.

It's funny how shamelessly the guy taking the interview just puts words in everyone's mouth. Oh, asian women on the website, Oh culture of education for Asians equals, black people don't have culture. Statistically it is true. Asians came to this country in huge numbers in the 50s, but so did black immigrants.. How many do you see in colleges? Does that guy even know YEARS of training that asian kids go through? I'm from a lower middle class family, but I got scholarships (not because of race, but because I worked as Developer for the university) and made it. But this guy wants to suggest that asians just cheated their way and black people were left behind. How many stories do you hear where there's social pressure on black kids to excell in schools, sports, chess clubs? Ask any asian kid, the pressure to score high on SATs was on them since they were 5 years old. That's a cultural thing. Don't make us feel like we didn't actually work hard and there's some sort of favoritism.

It would be interesting to have live tv of how Asians, Blacks and Whites live in different cities and countries. I know the Indians are leaving India as fast as they can as soon as they can. China pretty much disappears anyone wanting to leave, and countries have literally banned them from coming. UK has agreed to allow some 170,000-250,000 Hongkongers in though. Africa wants a return of the diaspora to help stabilise there, since Ghaddafi was assassinated there's been nothing but war and famine all over.

If you let only the top 5% of people from another country to immigrate to your country, then why would you be surprised that those are the most successful and hard working. That doesn’t mean all Asians are as successful or hard working, if that were true then Asian countries wouldn’t be so much poorer than western countries lol. Also the idea that Asians value education more isn’t even true. Asian countries have far lower rate of post secondary education than America/West. 40% of Americans aged 25-34 have a 4 year degree. It’s only 18% in China. It’s only 40% in Japan and 47% in SK, but other western countries have even higher than those.

Kenny Xu is correct. Also, this so called Asian “mythology” is not incorrect and there is nothing wrong with that. It’s reflective of the culture of so many Asian nations… Humility, respect, hard work. I see those traits in nearly every Asian person I’ve ever met. Why is that something to recoil from? No, not everyone is exactly the same or a monolith as you say, but why ignore statistics? We know Asians are involved in various facets of society and that’s all good. But why are you pointing to the America of the 1940’s as if that’s relevant context? Was there not anti-white/western sentiment in Asian countries in those days or generations before that? To then say that the country who supposedly hated you should’ve just automatically welcomed you in sounds weird and entitled. Why would so many people who think America hates them want to come here? Regarding black Americans, yes the problem IS them because Modern Black American culture is a mess. What do I mean by that? I mean the overwhelming numbers of absent fathers, glamorizing & glorifying thug/gang culture, normalization of sexual promiscuity, ongoing resentment and hate for white people, lack of personal responsibility, and self-alienation from the rest of American culture. Not to mention overwhelming numbers of violent crime & theft coming from the “black community” that nowadays is pretty much brushed aside by left wing community leaders, politicians, and pundits. Black Americans SHOULD take a lesson from others whose culture has taught them to be successful. They should be more humble, respectful, and hard working. They should complain less and forgive more. Those characteristics are sorely lacking among black Americans. Instead we see many who are perpetually angry, resentful, rude, entitled, and don’t seem to want to do the hard work that others do… including blacks from other nations. Black American kids are taught hatred for whitey from a very young age. This is still common among black families and is just laughed off. On top of all this, those black Americans who do try to better themselves often get chastised by others for doing so. Should we even get into the dynamic of those who are smeared as Uncle Toms & sellouts? Black Americans are keeping themselves down and only they have the power to lift themselves up, from the culture up, from the family up.

You fail to acknowledge that when Black people did pull themselves up by their bootstraps, work hard and be family-orientated, they were attacked for it by whites and still accused of being lazy, un-American, uncivilized and more. In the immediate years following the end of slavery into the early part of the 20th century Black Wall Streets existed across the United States and Black people were very much the model minority and thriving> white people became mad and jealous that Black people were defying the stereotypes so white people destroyed Black Wall Streets and refused to provide reparations for that destruction or the land grants promised to Black people post slavery which would have helped Black people to acquire wealth and be even more self sufficient

It's not a "model minority' myth" when academic outcomes almost perfectly correlates with group intelligence averages.
