The School of Life 1. I think voting shouldn't be considered freedom, but duty. People should be taught from a young age to cultivate a respect for their own role in making society a good thing to live within, and thus, the importance of voting with prudence and compassion. 2. I would facilitate widespread education surrounding social media and its affects for people of every demographic. Hopefully then, perhaps more people would understand that the current youngest generation isn't intrinsically inferior...every senior generation ever has complained about the succeeding ones; it's only that now, we have social media and the Internet, so everyone with the same idea can choose to listen only to each other, while blocking any and all other opinions out, creating a false sense of validation. 3. I would make education up to undergraduate studies paid for by the world's governments. 4. I would make psychology a required subject, like math and language classes, so hopefully newer generations would go into the world knowing a little more about themselves and each other. 5. I woukd make the School of Life app available for Android users ;)

Moses Bushido I agree very much with having psychology as a required subject at school, because so people could learn how to live happier, they could recognize if they are mentally ill and seek out help in an appropriate span of time and they would build a comprehension of others and toxic relationships.

The School of Life I agree with much was presented in the video. At the heart should be compassion. We should recognize that we all share a common humanity. Turn away from consumerism towards developing contenment and inner peace. Re-establish the idea of the common good for society over greed. We need a new philosophy or set of stories to help us live, connect, and make sense of our 21st century.

We should demolish the educational system we have now which is based on a person’s memory and obsession with getting a good grade, regardless if they understand what they’re being taught or not. What we have now is not ‘education’. Education should not be fear driven, most students aren’t excited or enthused about learning and often only work hard out of fear of upsetting their parents or not getting a job. Education should show people how exciting and rewarding it can be to learn and understand the world we live in, as well as understanding ourselves as individuals. I believe that with less fear and anxiety being instilled in young people, and with the replacement of awareness and understanding, the world will become a much less hostile place.

When you drill down to a lot of successful people, they either had supportive, well connected or rich parents (Donald Trump, Richard Branson, George Clooney), a lot of luck and where in the right place at the right time. (Bill Gates and Steve Jobs). Most of the tech billionaires were born on the West Coast of America and were born in the 50s and 60s and were in their twenties during the 70s and 80s when the tech curve first hit. This boom was centred in California. So if you were born in the 1990s in El Salvador the chances of you being a tech billionaire is very low

Western societies have pros and cons as any other society in the world so I am gonna list them here based on my observations: Pros: +most (if not all) Western societies give equal rights to you no matter your gender, your race, or your religion/belief. +Western societies are known to be developed in all types of industries (you have Germany speciality in Heavy Machinery for example). +Western societies are known to have a huge amount of wealth. +Western societies are the world's leaders in innovation. Cons: -Western societies tend to have a materiallistic mentality. -despite having a huge wealth and prosperous life, their suicide rates are high compared to 3rd world societies (this made me confused). -in countries like the USA/Canada, life is getting hard there, the high inflation, and housing problem there is on rise (dunno why and dunno if it's true but I heard a lot of americans whining about the housing problem). -Some western countries don't give full rights to its citizens (or they descriminate in other words). You got Poland/Hungary and their problem with LGBT, France and its problems with Muslims. (France is kinda understandable tho. Becuz it suffered many terrorist attacks there so...) -Morals and mentalities in the west are going downhill. If there are mistakes or want to add to the list. Pls do. And sorry for my broken english.

"Meritocracy" and "Individualism", and the lies associated with them, are the best reasons. I was actually thinking about this earlier today as I noticed people acting like sociopaths while driving, always in competition to get in front of each other. We're taught that if we try hard enough, we can get ahead. Yet we work super hard and still miss out on opportunities to other people because opportunities are limited. After a while, we become so heavily conditioned to compete with each other that it seeps into virtually all aspects of life. We're lied to, and we're told that if we do everything right, we will be rewarded. We may want to believe it, but deep down, most of us know it's a lie. We can feel it. We've experienced it. We know that life actually works differently that the lie makes it out to be. Individualism is of course tied into that, because only one person can fill one job, and if someone else gets it, you don't. Even if you've done everything right, if someone else also has done everything right, you could lose for no reason other than there was only one job to fill. Just like in driving, someone has to be ahead of the other. If someone's ego feels dissatisfied by being behind another car, fr whatever reason, that could trigger them to act aggressively, speed ahead of them, etc. And that speeding ahead, it rarely gets them to their destination sooner, yeah? It's not a practical decision to cut down on drive time. It's a psychological disposition about wanting to get ahead of other people, wanting to gain at other people's expense. Let's face it, in the age of modern capitalism, life is all about gaining at other people's expense, isn't it?

Most of the time, you do get reward if you work hard and do things right. But getting reward does not necessarily mean getting ahead of other people. Say for example if you take up a part time job at 7-11, you do earn extra money, though the extra money does not make you a rich person.
@chai_lattes4 жыл бұрын
"Wanting to gain at other people's expense" so true. This is a pillar of capitalism and modern society. Having enough is not enough anymore. We all want so much but so many things are only available in a finite amount. Even your driving example, only a finite amount of time is allotted to each of us, but some people believe their time is more valuable than others. And I think with our ever growing greed, everyone understands there's not enough to go around. So we viciously compete with each other, often at the expense of others and/or our own time, sleep, relationships, finances, and happiness to accrue or achieve some level of aspirational material wealth. But then what? I think capitalism indoctrines us to always want more, to make us feel like we're missing out or lacking in some way if we're not constantly aspiring towards something greater. Life is strange these days. There's an artifice and emptiness to the way we live our lives, and it's a cultural disease we're all suffering from. Life has to be about more than just getting ahead or keeping up with everyone else. I hope I'm able to break free from these dysfunctional tenets and find true happiness in my lifetime.

Society always looks at the ones who succeed, and not at the millions who failed while trying to succeed. We always hear, drop out of college, start a business, make money faster, Bill Gates dropped out, Mark Zukerberg dropped out, a lot of millionaires and billionaires dropped out, when the other side of the story is never told, there are way more drop outs who failed and some even became homeless instead of a rich successful person. Know this, for each person who succeeded, there are thousands and thousands who failed while doing the same thing. Success is not all about talent and dedication, there is a bit of luck that gets you to that level. And the unfortunate truth is, most of us do not have that level of luck, that is why the 10% of the richest individuals have just as much money as the rest of 90% of the world population.
@ivann99244 жыл бұрын
Real talk bro. Totally agree. Only close minded people agree that being a loser is the way to success. They forget the hard working ethos, the talent, the right connections to get to the position, the right time and place to leap which is luck that is also needed to be successful. Most people only got one of those and what're some of them stuck with... Low wage jobs with long hours, and disrespect from friends and family alike.

The logic used by OP is quite realistic, yet most of us never think about it this way, and I'd like to provide a reason (according to my anecdotal knowledge) why we never think about it in the same manner: to avoid facing our own existential thoughts that make our existence feel dreadful enough to make us go insane. We prefer to DO/CHASE anything that helps us avoid the futility & sheer meaninglessness of our tiny existence on an average planet orbiting an average star a part of a small system apart of a galaxy that is among hundreds in the local group, which itself is a part of a supercluster, among thousands such; a part of an observable universe encompassing a diameter of 93 billion light years. Our existence means nothing in the grand scheme of things, and we'd latch on to anything that will provide meaning. (Absurdism)

The modern world is riddled with insane rules and norms. Any rational observer aught to be incensed. What terrifies me most is the loss of creativity. Creativity is vital to the individual and the group. Without it, we can never imagine something better. If I could change one thing, I would re-ignite in people that spark. It gives us language, ideals, an appreciation for beauty, and a path to transcendence. With the death of creativity we've lost all hope.

Our issues all come down to a society that perpetuates a lack of love for mankind in general (one of our greatest weaknesses is the desire to judge ourselves and others, however, we’ve been trained to accept judgemental behavior without question from day one) along with a total loss of balancing and valuing the things that we should value most. The society we were unfortunately born into pits us against one another from the start in school, often not encouraging us to help others who aren’t doing well but to be proud that we’ve “achieved” more than those around us have and setting that as our standard for doing well in life. Celebrities and internet stars are a perfect example of people being valued and glorified over others for no reason other than vanity and setting lavish living standards. Have they contributed more to our species than our greatest philosophers and scientists? Rarely. Will they be forgotten before our greatest philosophers and scientists? Absolutely. From birth, your greatest right is your freedom to simply be human. To enjoy this life. All of our loved ones have that right. This is why so many people of all ages become rebellious, develop anxiety, depression, and are outcasted or disinterested in contributing to this society. Those people can sense in their souls that they have a right to a better life. Not a life of struggling at a job you hate to make ends meet so that you can simply “survive” and continue being a prisoner/slave to this structure. The truth is that we aren’t pawns and we don’t deserve to be treated this way. Businesses have structured complex ways of convincing us all that they can bottle and sell our freedom and joy to us through entertainment, social status, and an abundance of the things that we don’t need or truly want but have been trained to desire in order to fulfill the void that they created. They’ve monopolized all structures that were built to protect us: government, medicine, law enforcement, etc. You already have access to everything that you need and they’re terrified of the day when we all figure that. Loving ourselves and others through unselfishness, respect, spirituality, speaking out against injustice, creating all forms of art, dropping judgements, etc. is the essential key for human freedom and would lead to an achievement so great that it would free not only us but everything that lives here with us. Plants, animals, this earth, and future generations can be freed by actions that we make daily. It’s our burden as humans to fight against injustice and greed but it’s a battle that can be won easily if we can learn to truly stand united. We’d make so much more progress in the right direction as a species if people would perpetuate these ideas. We’d finally be mentally capable of structuring systems that evolve with us rather than relying on outdated... everything. Life is hard and at many times horrifying, but each of us has the key to make progressive change. Do everything with love. Love yourself truly. Discover what that really means for you. Don’t hide from yourself or seek value from others. We are all human and we will all continue making mistakes. Accepting that and moving forward by growing and learning is an underrated power that we all have. Question the world around you and teach others to do the same. I have faith in humanity and I’ve found that through loving ourselves, we can change the world and end a lot of this unnecessary suffering.

survive in other words
@Overphased6 жыл бұрын
(You'll have to excuse my English, this is long btw and the numbers are pure estimates) TLDR: it's how you survive Basically it has to do with human nature/tendencies to try our hardest to fit in and to alienate (and sometimes do worse things) anyone who disagrees with the group. In this case the group is like ~90% of society. And those ~90% of society thinks that all the problems talked about in the video aren't problems at all in fact they probably aren't even aware of it, and if you try to go against them or try to convince them otherwise, well....try, and see what happens. So unfortunately you have to semi-conform or "think as you like but behave like others (in this case society)" in order to really move up in the world, because if you think as you like and behave as you like the group will alienate you. I imagine some of you had this kind of experience at least once in your life, probably in school. PS. Robert Greens book "the 48 laws of power" tells (in much greater detail) of ways to achieve success in the current world, it doesn't say how to change it or anything, it's just like "here's how stuff works, it's messed up but it's the truth in today's world"

Solutions to mental health, 1. Make school fun and creative, forcing kids to learn things they don’t want to has been linked to poor mental health. 2. Abolish qualification needs, the modern world should be looking for personal skills and not the letter on your test paper this will allow people to express themselves a lot more easier which creates a good mental health. 3. Make school shorter so young people can focus on their hobbies, doing hobbies calms the brain allowing for a healthy mental life. Yes these reasons are all to do with school because school is the biggest cause for poor mental health in young people and suicide rates and changing these 3 things will lead to massive improvement

Some good points here. Education is mass produced like cars and phones. Capitalism does contribute. I have 50 students. Last year I had 90. I am not allowed to give personal attention or encourage creativity with that workload. Yet many people think teachers have an easy job and do little work. Criticism is easier than construction.

@@edwardlulofs444 My father says (he's a lecturer) each teacher should have the maximum number of students of ten, not 30, 60 or anything higher. This is so teachers could actually aid students to become "human". The thing is, in my country, there is a horribly low chance of trained-to-be teachers that actually become teachers! My father said that the teacher training programs the government made (in my country) are utterly useless and should be fixed. Thus teachers ended up having 30+ students each. Perhaps there are varieties of problems we citizens failed to foresaw unlike the government (hopefully).

make school shorter? Are you nuts? State school kids are only in there learning for 5 hours a day! Make school shorter and most of them will simply become bored, feral youth with no direction or ambition, since 9 times out of 10 both parents are at work. Jeez, the situation is bad enough already, your plan would make it 10 times worse! Make school longer, and bring in extra-curricular learning facilitators. The extra time should be for hobbies, freely chosen by the children, with a few mandatory classes - financial management, mind management, and an updated version of home economics focusing on wellness. Hobbies often require costly resources (musical instruments, art tools, sports gear & facilities etc) which can be provided most cost-efficiently in schools. Foster a culture of healthy competition, and in tandem foster childrens' appreciation of each others' different incliinations and abilities. In other words, bring state schools up to the standard of private schools, where the extra-curricular element pushes kids and better prepares them for adult life. This won't alleviate all the mental trials and tribulations of childhood and adolescence, and we need to address the mental health problems created by a culture of perfectionism in top tier schools, but it'll help level the playing field and make for stronger minds.

Strangely enough, the big "setbacks" in my life (cancer, broken ankles, bipolar disorder, non - employability, etc.) drove me to think about what was important in my life. And that boiled down to 2 things: my friends and family, and self - care. I already had education up to and including a graduate degree, and yet my schooling did not garner me a career. I never was able to break into my chosen field, no matter how much education I had. Make no mistake: I got high grades, was on the Dean's list and President's list for much of my schooling, and in my Graduate Record Examinations to enter graduate school, my scores were high in both verbal and mathematical sections. My sister who worked in the Department of Education at the time told me nobody does that; they are either high - scoring in one section or the other. And yet, none of that got me a career, though I struggled hard to get one, including sending out over a thousand tailored resumes in my efforts. Along the way I pursued a few other passions, one being writing a book (and then several more), and though that was a great accomplishment, I ultimately found it wasn't the be all and end all (though it was and is fun to do). I was at my sister's funeral, and my cousin Michael who was a United Methodist minister and would deliver the eulogy asked people their experiences with my sister. My sister was an accomplished French horn player who was invited to play for the President of the US. She was a top welder at her company that made barges, and she welded on the Susan Komen barge that was pink with a pink ribbon on it. She held down four jobs at a time to make ends meet. She taught at a prestigious Southern Indiana high school, directing a 110-piece marching band. She was a people expert: she easily identified the strengths of people around her, and she consulted us each when she needed our expertise. (I got the chemistry questions.) She became a very good Communications Specialist in the Army National Guard: a sharpshooter, a humvee driver, and a self-proclaimed "Wire Diva." But the story that my cousin got that was the consensus was her loving heart and deep - feeling Soul. This was summed up in her penchant for keeping a silky piece of cloth with her as a comfort and lovey, even at school and work. She called it a peebee. And that's what people remembered her for: not her accomplishments, but her deep feelings for people and her peebees. And so I keep my friends and family as close as possible as well as practice my religion as best as I can. And self-care as well. And these all get me through life.

@J Colton and the sick, the crippled, the unlucky? Maybe they deserve nothing because they could not work, and so did no work, but should they get nothing? Should they die? Decrease the surplus population? You have no idea - NONE - what Marx & Engels were actually on about. Communism was never meant to be robbing the rich to pay the poor whilst the poor did nothing; Marxists are much more precise in their terminology, and when they say they wish to collectivise "private property," they are speaking specifically of *capital* - i.e. the means to work, the *tools*, not the *products*, thereby enabling more people who want to work to do so and earn their keep - not "personal property," to be given away as handouts. And to equate Marxism with fascism? Utter nonsense. If anyone shouts loudest about meritocracy, it's fascists. They *love* to divide the world into the "deserving" and "undeserving." Odd that you'd use fascism as a slur, when you're talking just like a fascist. Ashamed to own it? You want people to "contribute?" Great, communists think so too. How about we give them free access to tools, working drawings, education, raw materials and distribution channels, so that they can do that! Finally, why should you "carry" people whom you consider "worthless?" Well, gosh, it's a little thing we humans, as a social species, evolved to make our societies function that's called "empathy." Perhaps you're a psychopath and don't have any.

@J Colton I was quite successful but crashed out because I couldn't cope with the Darwinian harshness of a dog eat dog world. I gave it everything I had, I'm not lazy or feckless, just not equipped to cope with a "meritocracy" where (though it is unspoken), AVARICE is the primary metric. We are born into a world that requires we fit but many of us do NOT fit and struggle. A large proportion wind up unable to cope. I suppose they "deserve" to die in misery? Consider for yourself, a little humility could go a long way.

A potential issue I'd always seen is that that can pressure individuals into overperforming when that may truly not be suitable for them, most people would quickly evaluate the first scorn they should receive for failing to acknowledge their designated duty as a shortcoming, seeing as it would negatively influence the entire community at once. That mentality conflicts with those established here and promotes a very self-destructive lifestyle, feeding back into the flawed philosophy of "effort = long term gain."

Technology is good in the hands of smart people. Plebs will always use it incorrectly and with no measure. People will just have to distance themselves from these technologies and start valuing actual reality. People will start doing this, because vitamin D is their biologic need, and not browsing reddit. I have experienced that and I can say that me and almost everyone from my generation is a victim of this advanced technology, but it's a virtue, which has not only connected, but enlightened us in many ways. Now about men distancing themselves and comparing themselves to Elon Musk, they have to just realise that Elon's public image is good and of almost every celebrity that we glorify. In his head his life is probably the same routine, going over and over and his emotions are as ordinary as everyone, just his materialstic value is upgraded.( Not talking about Elon only, he's a scientific man, he values contributing rather than self pleasure and standing amongst others )

One man said his mother died, the next it was a child, the next lost a brother and I cannot remember the other but it was some sort of loss as well. My ex told me to get over it when I lost 4 people close in my life. No time to cry just keep going. Then came panic attacks depression and anxiety.

Still in line with this episode, I suggest: 1) do not project your ability to be happy on anything or anyone. Happiness takes effort in the moment you are currently in to realize. If you are going through something awful, let yourself embrace how awful it is. Don't force yourself to be happy or deny the seriousness of the misery you have been experiencing. 2) restrict access to social media. Social media creates an internalized dialogue of many voices, instead of just maintaining the one you need to listen to and follow the most: your own. A culture that constantly relates and compares leaves you feeling like you are always, "less-than," and that's not ok.

Richard Lewis I agree the modern day individualism and feminism movement has left a lot of women alone. I'm not saying that she needs to be married but a few good men around to help around the house helps. @LegoSwordViedos5 жыл бұрын
@@candymorgan1720 Excuse me a few good men around the house to help? So what men just have to bow and not only earn more money then the women pay for the vast mogority of stuff, now they have to be cucked in a harem while having to do more house work, which by the way you lazy feminists don't seem to help much with the yard work, when asked to pay equal on the bills you often don't, your entitled for the men to still pay for your meals and entertainment and gifts, how many feminists pay for the guys meal? or get them lavish gifts? right hardly ever because it's not expected because you a hypocritical who just want all the perks with none of the responsibility. Women want to get paid more for doing less work. Man and a women both have consturuction jobs, so they "both have the same job" to a feminist doesn't matter the guy in upside down in a trench moving heavy steal, tying off lines getting sweaty in the heat or frozen hands in winter, getting covered in mud and muck and grease and blood. While the girl stands by the side and holds a trafic sign. But feminists REEEEEE!!!! that she ought to be paid the same. And we need more women in power when there aren't near as many women in all the awful jobs. Again they just want the good stuff. And what men ought to just do everything for free!?! Oh but if we don't you shame us and just say we aren't "good men." And guess what maybe the monogamy of the past wasn't perfect but at least it saw to many of these issues. even in the past most of the time the men did all the work brought home all the money and were shamed by society if they didn't tough it out and provide, often the men had to do all the repair, all the yard work, lifting anything heavy often on our own ruining our backs and bodies. And what do men have to face in the modern world? tons of stuff feminists don't even recognize. And now the gender relations and dating for the young is just ruined. because anyone looking to settle down doesn't really have many options. often because women will whore it up with the attractive guys because "her body her choice." "don't slut shame me." while the average young guy gets nothing, and we are just told by you people to accept it that no one wants us and we should be ashamed for even expressing our feelings. we are told to just make money and get to ridiculous standards that the women don't even live up to. and even then the women only come crawling back to the average dependable guy once they get older and uglier, and the hot guys give her less attention then they used to when she had her youth. then she traps him in a marriage, gets a kid, stops having sex with the guy and or cheats, while the man is now forced to have no sex and spend all his money on her and the kid while getting little else, then not only must he bring home all the money so she can spend it on a stupid bigger lawn or house or car to show off to the nabors, not only must he still do all the "manly" house work, all the repairs and yard work, now his feminist wife hen pecks him and says he needs to do more cleaning around the house. translation do more work to cover my lazy keester or I will divorce you and take everything you own and RUIN YOU! Oh and often now guys are realizing why women often want kids now is not because you love your husband you just want to trap a kid into existence who is basically forced to love you unconditionally, so then you can feel loved by your kids and no longer have to put in any effort with your husband. And even if all this fails the majority of welfare payments go to women, and men are more neat tax payers then what they take out, so effectively the state will just take more money from the men and give it to women. So then now men have to work even harder to gain enough money and resorces to attract a women. And likewise a guy could not care any less what a women makes, because like I said so what if she makes lots of money he's not getting much anyway.
@chadthelad13675 жыл бұрын
Viridian, I don’t really get into the feminist debates. The type of women usually described are often young minded, drama queens, which men should already know to steer clear of. But with said.. you do make some interesting and factual points that many women themselves even realize. I do notice in particular how many women sort of physically and even emotionally abandon the husband after children come into the picture. Sure men do this as well, but this is alot more common with women than most think and women often don’t hold themselves accountable for this. Now Smart and insightful women are moreso aware of this. They value their relationship, and will make it a point to show it with obvious *actions* (gratitude, initiating affection and sex, etc) Luckily, there are women out there who do still believe in relationship and or marriage, along with the family unit while holding themselves accountable in relationships. Again, even well intentioned women do this to men. Many, many times Sometimes it’s the only example they know or have been given. Sometimes they over-parent which can interfere with the relationship. And sometimes there are deeper issues that they need to address as you mentioned. Sadly many men accept the distancing of the women as the norm, or just eventually cave in and cheat from months and often times years, of a gross lack of affection and feeling undesired, and of course he then looks like the bad guy. (I don’t advocate cheating but this often times is what makes many good/loyal men susceptible to it) In the end, we all need to work to better understand eachother. Both men and women should be empowered as individuals. But like anything use good sense with it, and realize we are better off working together as a team. Selfishness, and being at odds, will certainly get us nowhere either.

The problem is that everything you pointed out as a negative, has a positive version of it -- and everything you pointed out as positive, has a negative version of it. In my experience, what ultimately leads us to the negative side of everything, is the worship of human authority. This has made adulthood a state of extended adolescence, removed critical thinking, removed discernment, and perpetuates trauma and a victim identity. So whether we're dealing with meritocracy, individualism, collectivism, or anything else you described -- all of these can lead to positives and negatives, and when we have a mentally ill population, it can only ever lead to complete self destruction of both individuals and nations. This is how empires rise and fall, and the cycle of suffering continues. This is why as a collective, we seem to never learn from history, ever. And we always make the same mistakes again, and again, and again, and again.

Thanks for the good thoughts. Enjoyed the solutions provided. I don't have depression, but I'm bewildered by all the options life throws at us
@natrelacoustix5 жыл бұрын
The worst part of all this is if you suffer from depression and approach your doctor or medical practice they diagnose 'you' as having the defect. They say 'you' are ill. The saying that, your mental health should not be judged on the basis of a profoundly broken society (sorry I am paraphrasing) is true. Your mind is having a perfectly normal reaction to adverse negative external stimulus. And I find the worse culprits of finger pointing in depressive conditions... psychiatrists. Why? Well think about the nature of their work and what traditionally they consider a mental health issue is. They exist to make sure you can fit back into society with treatment, counselling or medication/drugs. But it doesn't seem to matter to them how depraved or sick modern society actually is, how low you have to sink morally or ethically speaking or how stunted consciously with drugs you become. They're remit is to make you fit back in. And each time society 'resets' to a new low, psychiatry resets to the same level regardless of morality or decency. Societies norms' are psychiatrists norms'. It's the 'out of sight out of mind' ' brush it under the carpet' approach. And 'that' is the true sickness. We can live better lives. It isn't some naive, utopian notion to believe we can live better lives. All of the points in this video can be addressed and rectified, but it takes cooperation not division. And division is exactly what modern politics and society promotes.

Being humbled by the universe is a good first step in getting beyond secularism. It needs to go a little farther. Secularism accepts the smallness of human affairs in the universe; astronomers and evolutionary biologists know humanity is a blip on the screen already. But it is not clear that this dust particle on the floor of nature, as it were, really matters. The proper solution to secularism is not only humility at our smallness. Rather, it must be in combination with seeing the ordinary as something lovable, as seeing ourselves as one small part of the world or the universe quietly working with the rest of it. Religion has always been good at reminding us of our smallness and our ordinariness. Our work _does_ matter - because we're part of the balance of the whole thing, however small, and simply getting our small part right is quite work enough.

Systematically disabuse ourselves of all the excess. I started with eggs. I decided I couldn't eat an egg unless it was free range farmed. It cost an extra dollar. Happy about that. I moved on to coffee. So many broken coffee machines in the landfill. No machines. Coffee, boiling water, grounds in my cup. That's my favourite way to drink coffee now. I wash my clothes by hand. Et cetera. Free yourself. Free up space by turning away from unsustainable over processed systems. I believe that people need time to relax in more than they need things surrounding them. My time rich life is what I would wish for others.

these are well articulated factors. but one thing you failed to mention (and one we should talk about more), is our lack of ability to decide for ourselves what is truly meaningful to us - meaningful enough to justify the inevitable suffering that is part of our human condition. yes, it is nice to know that there are all these large-scale societal issues that explain our "background anxiety/sadness", but it is not exactly helpful nor functional; because it doesn't inform us how to move on from them, and it would be naive of us to expect the world to move towards the ideal direction you are describing in the video. as long as we are alive, suffering is inescapable and this is not exclusive or at an heightened level for the 21st century modern man. existentialism is one useful way to look at the perennial issue. perhaps the way is to take personal responsibility, rather than to point fingers at large-scale, abstract structures of thinking, not because they are wrong but because they are not functional. they do not empower the individual, when it is exactly the case where the individual needs to learn how to think for oneself and decide what makes this life worthwhile despite all its chaos. the current state of the world should not be an excuse for a lack of self-determined action. we deserve to treat ourselves better than that, and we are certainly capable of finding the answers on our own.

This is exactly what you said, you aren't speaking "ON AVERAGE" when you say that no one in the west has ever suffered as much as someone in a developing nation. The quoted sentence does not lead the context of your argument to be about averages, but rather states that there is literally no one in the West that has felt the suffering that third world citizens feel. Which you, me, and anyone else with a brain knows is bullshit. I dare say that there are people in developed nations that have faced WORSE. Would you rather be starving in a country where most of the population is starving (ie. that's just normal), or starving in a country where most of the population is fat (ie. there's plenty to go around but fuck you)? Do you think going hungry while most of the people around you are well off would screw your psyche up more than going hungry while most around you also go hungry?

Depression is heavily linked to inflammation in the body. Think of us as cave men in a threatening situation whereby you're under attack from a sabre tooth. Your body is prepared for fight or flight, filling the body with inflammation in preparation of a coming wound. You navigate the situation well and escape but are left fatigued from adrenaline and the inflammation produced - well rested will leave you feeling right again and the cycle repeats. The modern world isn't too dissimilar in the sense that we're constantly preparing for a wound in the form of bills, social anxiety, conformity, road rage, other's intolerable behaviours, your boss, your job, so your body prepares itself in those stressful situations. The difference today is that the wound never comes therefore rendering the body in a perpetual state of stress and inflammation and, in turn, depression as it reaches the brain. Until we get out of the constant 5th gear of life, the first world will be in constant depression. 25% of the first world suffers with mental illness and this correlates to the very environment we created fir ourselves. It's killing us yet we accept it for finite pleasure.

Inflammation is also caussaly linked to air pollution.9 in 10 people globally breathe polluted air. Just look at WHO statistics. Depending on location, 10-25% of deaths is related directly to air pollution and its probably even worse if you just look at the illnesses related to inflammation by air pollution. Even suicide increases on polluted days. Inflammation caused by air pollution is the biggest killer on the planet. And this is backed up by science by the way.
