Comic Sans is an excellent font. When young children see it, they know the message is for them to read. When they see Times New Roman, they know it is for their parents to read. That is simply excellent.

Edit: I am a hyper cringe. No surprises there. Original, undiluted cringe: Unless it is for a science fair board in the 3rd grade and your father expects you to figure out what is "wrong" with your title, by yourself, with little to no feedback. Is it the spelling? No. The grammer? No. I made the size right, is the spacing off? No. Is it supposed to be bold? No. Does it need to be better worded? No. Is it just a bad title? No. It was the fucking comic sans. Except replace the "No"s with silence, and him expecting me to figure it out myself... with no feedback, at least not until I got the right answer.

Esthetically, I have nothing against Arial or other sans serif fonts, but there are two kinds of problems in terms of readability: first, some characters are IDENTICAL; and second, some character combinations are distinguished by VERY small gaps. Examples: upper case “I” and lower case “L” are identical, lower case “I” differs only in the gap between the dot and the body of the letter, and the digit 1 has a very small serif at the top. With all of these characters being so narrow, a sequence of three or more of them can be difficult to read. Lower case “M” is distinguished from the combination of lower case “R” and “N” ONLY by a TINY gap. Upper case “O” and digit “0” are also difficult to distinguish, though not identical. When I receive a password or other code in an email or on a web site, and it is in Arial, I copy and paste it into a Notepad window, where the default font is Courier New, a MONOTYPE (constant width) SERIF font, in order to be sure I can enter EVERY character correctly. But reading a BOOK, no problem with any font.

as someone who studies typography in my spare time (not at uni, at least not yet), i think you’re missing the premise here. It’s not about making something that cures cancer - that’d help, sure, but it’s a different thing. It’s very easy to underestimate something that we all take for granted - but architects will notice small details in buildings, engineers will notice good engineering, and typographers - they’ll notice details in type. Their job is hard and intricate, and not respected enough by far. The books and signs and all documents, they read well when they’re typographically treated, and as much as you might want something groundbreaking - there you go. A typographically good road sign will decrease accidents caused by not following it, a typographically good document will make it easier for students to get higher grades, and a typographically good book will read well, make more readers finish it, and in turn sell more copies - we rarely recommend books we haven’t finished. It’s a small thing, but it’s as detailed as many other mediums in art - such as colour. You’re free to realise that the most groundbreaking things in design and life in general often are those which we take for granted.

@@nuloom I'm currently a machinist, and before that, I actually got paid to watch paint dry 😆 (lab technician/QC at a paint factory). I also love art. Worked with my family for a few years, we did a variety of work, and I got to design things like signs cut out of metal (then go and cut them with a waterjet that used water and garnet abrasive to cut through almost anything at up to 60,000 PSI). Fonts were very important, and there's the added fun of incorporating some kind of tab into the design to hold the centers of letters like "a,e,p..." (he said what the term was in the video, but I can't remember) on the piece (if this is hard to visualize, think of a stencil and how there are little lines added in to some letters, breaking them up into two or more segments). I even had a customer ask me if I could replicate someone's cursive handwriting and cut an entire saying out of brass plate. Not engrave, where you can go different depths for detail, but cut out. Not enough little tabs in some letters, they fall into the tank, too many, and it's illegible. I scanned the writing sample they gave me, converted the scan into a vector image, and It took me hours of editing over the course of three days, but it turned out pretty sweet

Ah yes the Amiga 500- and its fonts Garnet, Topaz. A shame it did not go into the difference between, Postscript, Truetype, Bitmaped, Stroked. Many years ago we had at work a HP Laserjet 2, it cost ?? alsmot as much as my 5 year old car at the time ( as did NEC 286 Powermate PC's in mid 80's ) Anyway, it had 4 fonts, and you had to pay $$$ for separate font cartridges you installed in the machine, they were very pricey, each one would have been over $1,000 dollar to Adobe, the 3 in 1 or 5 in 1 cartridge was almost $1500 - good value for the day There is some good reading / youtube on the progress of paid fonts ( copywrite / trademark ) disappearing to "font wars" and every one cashing in Regards George

@@nsputnik You don't know. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Apple_typefaces . Now you know. The point, though, was that Jobs/Apple introduced "real" fonts in computers and WYSIWIG, i.e. printing in the actual typeface instead of using the printer's internal font. Old Apple was all about style. Just like today's Apple but with, you know, */actual/* style.

Fascinating article. I really liked the history part, talking about how the different fonts were created, and I also liked the psychological breakdown near the end for using different fonts. I have always used ariel, which really does fit my personality, being extremely "detail-focused". I guess that's why I have fallen in love with most of your presentations on different topics, because you don't include a lot of humor usually (at least I don't see a lot of humor in the first pass). :) Upon introspection, I do see the irony or ironic humor, but I respect that for its educational and objective presentation. :) Then again, it's probably your British accent that is hiding your irony or humor. :)

@@davidbeppler3032 You forget that at the time the OT was written, all of God's people spoke Hebrew, and at the time the NT was written, Greek was the universal language of the world. This was decreed by Alexander the Great. So no, it did not need to be translated when it was written. But things change. You haven't noticed? Even the way in which God deals with man has changed. Yes, the Bible was written the way God intended. But why do you think He wrote the OT in Hebrew, and the NT in Greek? Do you think He didn't intend Jews to read the NT and get saved? The Jews clung to Hebrew as the only legitimate language, and continued to use it in worship just like the Catholics continued to use Latin in worship until recently. Why do you think there was so much confusion over language in the Book of Corinthians? Do you believe He didn't intend for anyone to read it after Hebrew and Greek died out? Do you believe he didn't intend the English speaking or Spanish speaking populations to read His word? Do you believe He hasn't blessed the KJV? Do you believe you know better than tens of thousands of translators who have labored for God and died as martyrs for translating the Scriptures? Do YOU believe YOU know better than God?
