A few years ago I was playing a restaurant brunch gig outdoors in Northern California. It was chilly so no one was sitting outdoors, except for one older couple. When we finished the gig the couple came over to talk to me. The gentleman looked at my pedal board and set up. He asked me what picks I use. I use Dunlop Jazz III picks. He said “I make those, I’m Jim Dunlop”. Luckily I had a Phase 90 on my board! He asked for my address. A few days later I got a package with 100 Jazz III picks and 20 sets of strings (which they were working on at the time). I’ll never forget that as long as I live.

Being from Sweden, I love the "Hasselblad" sign in the background. Mr Hasselblad (and his cameras) became worl famous around the Apollo project and one of his cameras went to the moon. Late 1960's...Mr Hasselblad flew from Sweden to New York (this is in his biography) A young woman at LFK airport customs looked in his passport, looked up and said: Your name is just like the camera! Mr Hasselblad starred her in her eyes and said: I am the camera! Classic!
@telecasterday
@telecasterday Жыл бұрын
I noticed that too. My dad was able to write off things like cameras, so he had an awesome leather briefcase from them with a dark purple (as I remember) lining with slots for filters, the film body pack thing, lenses etc. He was into hassleblad (sp?) well before the moonshot because I remember recognizing the camera in one of the moon pictures. Yet another casualty of the digital age. Too bad we have no choice as to whether or not to be so involved with computers and cell phones, as I think life was far better before them.

The MXR Timmy is by far my favorite pedal. It's reliable, quiet, and can do everything from a simple boost to blues edge of breakup to crunchy crunch. I'm not a heavy gain person, so the MXR Timmy legit has it all for me

I love the Timmy too. I have an MXR mini Booster pedal in front of it (boost plus a bit of that EP pre-amp) and plan to put the Duke of Tone after it. I find the MXR pedals play together really well and "gain stack" perfectly.

I've been so pleasantly surprised with my MXR Timmy. It was gifted to me, I probably wouldn't have got one otherwise, and I'm so happy to have one. From boost to breakup it's perfect. And if I want heavier gain I add it to another gain pedal to get insane amounts of distortion and sustain.
@GlennMichaelThompson
@GlennMichaelThompson Жыл бұрын
@@howlinthewilderness That seems to be a great approach to getting some heavier distortions. I've been trying the MXR Timmy paired with several different overdrives, boosters and distortions. Still trying to decide what to use in a live setting.... decisions... decisions! :0)

One time I stopped at the Benicia Dunlop factory to pick up a new switch for my old mxr, they just gave the switch to me, I was willing to pay for it. They then proceeded to fill up a bag of picks, strings and stickers and thanked me for the support! No I say thank you Jim and your sweet company!

Back around 2003, I picked up a Rotovibe in a pawn shop(for $30), and it was missing the rubber skid plate on top. I called Dunlop, told him where I got the pedal, and asked for the part number so I could order it through GC. The guy on the phone asked if I had a credit card and he could sell me one direct. I did not. Then he said "what's your address?", and a couple days later I had one in my mailbox. It's not an expensive part, but it was a very cool gesture, and it stuck with me that they would send out a part for a pawn shop pedal, and I play mostly Dunlop and MXR effects ever since.. Beyond great customer service.

Sometimes it sorta feels like we are in the “instagram” era, who cares what the pedal sounds like as long as it’s pretty, uses all NOS parts, very expensive and limited availability. Can’t forget a super fancy box too. (I do understand presentation is important but when it’s the main priority it becomes kinda silly)
@ericfarrell1625

@@stoneysdead689 I think some of how I feel towards the market is self induced as I own quite a few expensive pedals and then see Frusciante melting brains with a bunch of Boss pedals making me realize I need to focus more on my playing and not minute differences from one overdrive to another, what’s the hottest pedal, etc. But hey, as long as your having fun I guess.

While I am a big fan of pretty pedals like the ones Tru-Fi offer, I could care less what the pedal comes in. I don’t want a fancy box I rather just have the manual and the pedal. Idc what the pedal looks like but it’s a huge bonus if it’s a great-quality great-sounding pedal that looks really cool. Josh is usually passionate. His passion here is wonderfully overwhelming. And so addictive. Bravo. I'm jazzed for the Duke of Tone from so many sources of influence and this video just cements it. I wish it wasn't over $300 (Australian) and on a waiting list until 2023, but I'm now beyond caring about such road blocks. Take my money! The last pedal I bought was Josh's Screamer for no other reason than being wrapped up in the (launch) moment, and it worked a treat then and I hope it works a treat now with The Duke. As always, than you Josh for being the passionate you

Fascinating and truly informative vid - thanks for that! I had no idea MXR went under and were then 'saved'. I bought a Phase 90 in NZ when they came out - it was exciting back then! I still have my Dyna Comp & Distortion+ (recently got a hole drilled so I could switch to mains power!) and Phase 100 - all vintage. A few years ago I wanted a simple, subtle chorus for a bit of live work and looked at the Dimension C (I have a vintage Roland Dimension D Rackmount in my studio) but opted for the MXR Analog Chorus which is cool - not 'obvious' but you notice when you turn it off - great for Bill Frisell style clean chordal stuff. Will check out these 2 new ones as they will, no doubt, be in stock at Tom Lee here in Hong Kong (proof of your 'accessibility' point). I have a few boutique pedals - Effectrode Blackbird, Neo Ventilator II, Origin Cali76 & Crowther Audio Double Hot Cake (Paul is an old friend in NZ - still make limited runs by hand) but lifelong fan of MXR since the 70's so fun overview. I also bought a Cry Baby a few years back - who would have guessed? Amazing historical and business lesson. Thanks again!

Just gonna join in on the kudos for your attitude and sharing of your knowledge, and for your spirit of boosting other brands rather than seeing them as competitors. I'm a hairdresser by full-time trade and have always had a similar attitude - there's enough to go around, customers like having options and it's okay if three other people cut their hair, or they have three different overdrive flavors; whatever. Maybe people will come back and sit in my chair or they won't, but I feel like as long as I'm always doing my best then people will find me, and it's okay. More options are always better, and it's great to see smaller companies joining forces; everyone wins.

“We arrived with bells on”… When the most common way to get around was by horses, horse drawn buggy, or horse drawn sled, you could adorn the yoke with decorative bells. Travel was often treacherous. If you came across someone who was stuck, and your horse(s) pulled them out to safety, it was a common gesture for them to offer you the bells on their horse. Thus, when you made it home safely, you could say, “We not only had a wonderful trip, we’ve arrived with bells on!” JJZ…(°¿.°`)

Josh if you're reading this: A. I love the Monday Meetings. 2. I know it would never happen and yes we have the Sugar Drive but an actual Klon Collaboration would be exactly what you are talking about because the barrier of entry is so high on the "real" Klon. A mini Centaur with Gold with Oxblood would be 🔥! III. The most amazing Pie in the Sky idea for me is if MXR could get with the Dumble estate to make an official Dumble Drive. Four. I wish JHS would do a behind the seen "How Its Made" episode of how a pedal is made. Love Josh (both of you!) JHS and all you do.

I have a pedalboard and collection with only mini pedals. I have the Timmy, ordered the Duke of Tone. Also have the Tumnus and the ODR-1. One transparant overdrive is still missing though I want to be able to stack and experiment with on my board is The Morning Glory mini. Will that happen one day?

Josh, I’m sure I’m one of thousands that could watch and listen to your presentations for hours. Your passion and insightfulness in this topic is nothing but impressive. Please write a hardcover “coffee table” book in the vein of Synth Gems or Vintage FX but only about pedals of course, full of pictures of your collection, interviews, anecdotes and your own products of course. Time to put materiality to your digital encyclopedic contributions.

I was looking at the Timmy and honestly, the marketing explaining the 'colab' wasn't that great. I was a bit confused as to what, who and how they came to that pedal and in the end didn't get it because I thought it wasn't going to be like the original. After viewing this today, I get a MUCH better understanding as to what is happening with these re-issues through MXR, especially with Dunlop's involvement. Very cool Josh! Thank you very much for the cool VID's.

Playing and enjoying music and building support for artists are so important. Our young are so overwhelmed with internet eye candy..sound bites.. video and lousy media. Music can be pure but I dunno. Music is being very marketed and distorted to sell or take something from the normal person ( or child ). Keep it up Jhs. You keep us thinking what’s important.

I have the MXR Timmy and have pre-ordered the MXR Duke of Tone. I have no idea what the "original" Timmy is like but I like what I have. I am 2 years into the AnalogMan King of Tone waiting list so if I don't die first or miss the notification that it's my turn, I'll find out how that sounds ... eventually. Based on my experience with the MXR Timmy my hopes are high for the Duke of Tone. Ultimately I can't get all wound up about "authenticity"; I care more about whether things sound good, and I like trying new things; and I don't mind if I get good sounds without paying a ton of money.

The big wah pedal song for me was Cream "White Room." There was also the slightly more mellow but definitely psychedelic (and using about EVERY effect at the time) "Crimson and Clover" but I forget which one was first.

Just got a call from Sweetwater. I had ordered a MXR Duke of Tone and a rep called me and thanked me for my pre order and he wanted me to know that it was probably going to be till the end of October before I would get my pedal. I knew it was gonna be some waiting cause of so many people wanting this thing. I thought it was awesome that someone took the time to call and make sure I still wanted it. He even offered to refund my PayPal purchase so I could put it on a credit card so I wouldn’t have to pay for it now. Very cool of them to call. I kept my order as is. I’m telling you right now that any future guitar related purchases will be through that company. Really impressed especially with how piss poor costumer service seems to have gotten since the pandemic pretty much everywhere I go. I’ll probably order a Timmy next 😃

I have the mini Timmy. It sounds amazing. I recently tried it with the gain turned all the way down and it sounds great as a boost. Someday I'll get the full-size one since I like bigger knobs. I plan to get the MXR Duke soon and then eventually get a Prince so I can use them together (and have a full-size pedal, plus the two internal dip switches).

Incredible post. Heartfelt. I feel this is a post to correct the sewer that over ambitious gear click bait KZbinr pages have recently said about The Duke OT. I recently heard a KZbinr say that Analog Man was now a lesser company due to the MXR colab. That was the implication for sure this simply was their opinion. Problem is that their influence having 300+ K subs that their opinion sends out a bias ripple in the big pond of gear lovers and uneducated consumers. I’ll leave it there. Blessings to you Josh. I need to buy a T.

I have the MXR iL Torino bought at blowout price of $69 from Sweetwater. Love it’s great unique amp-like tone. My only problem: does not have a big wide sound like other pedals especially in overdrive mode so I use the boost mode which has a good amount of gain, then it’s not as thin sounding. Wish I had bought some of the others by the Italian builder plus the Shin-Juku.
