Biking in the Netherlands is always a more pleasant experience as in countries like the US or the UK, but the infrastructure in rural areas might even exceed that of Dutch inner-cities. Biking through those kinda areas in spring and summer is just divine; one moment you're going through vast green meadows, the next you're riding on top of a dyke overlooking beautiful river landscapes and a few minutes later you're in a fairytale-esque forest or smoothly swooping over some small hills (or dunes) thinking you're in Cornwall or central-France.

In America the people are bigger, but get smaller when they use the bike more. Greetings Roelof from the Netherlands

The seize of a country should not matter. Most people travel within city limits. It is all about infrastructure. Trips between cities most Dutch people use their cars also. The number of cars per capita is amongst the highest in Europe, but is just a question how they are used.

Ruky, the US can not use the Dutch system as template, that much is obvious. But they can get to the point The Netherlands is at. It takes a few decades, and many changes. Starting with zoning laws, by creating more and more mixed zoning. Creating better pavement, and adding bike lanes/paths in suburbs. Continuing and expanding on "bike trains" as in some US towns is being done. Yes it takes time, but so it did for The Netherlands !!! Compare the infrastructure of the 1970's to the current one, it took time to get there. See amongst others the YT channel Active Towns, change can take place.

3:28 learn to swim at seond grade "schoolswimming" where the whole class gets to swimming lessons one hour a week every week on a certain day. All schools in evry city did that when I was in pre -school in the 1980"s , and yes..the annual "swimm-off" to recieve a diploma, start with A..goes on to C then they where called "brevette"1 to 4"after that you'd be able to put in sub to become qualified swimguard.. going back to the swimm off for A.. yes clothed swimming a course but no shoes on,just t shirt and long pants, like sports pants ( the great cheat, they where light when wet).. for B it had to be jeans, and shoes, and no All Starrs like.. nope..for C it was swimming with jacket aswell and boots, no shoes alowed. the exam was swimming atleast so mant pool long ends long side back and forward, diving up rings that where thrown randomly in the water by the swim teacher, and closer to the date of the swimm off, where all of family friends and so on are invited, more clothes come on.. so.. on day teacher will tell.. next week bring your old boots, or bring bring your old jacket, because the swim of fhad to be in full gear for whatever dilpoma it was needed..

If a cyclist is hit by a car, the driver of the car is always (partly) liable for damage and or medical care unless the accident is caused by a brutal mistake of the cyclist. You need witnesses to prove that. This is established by law to protect cyclists😊

6:08 ..when bikes and cars hit, the car is in the wrong, no debate, the car driver has to prove the biker was in the wrong way of acting accordingly in traffic. Biker for that matter can be acting as true assholes, riding towards a car with a lifted leg, to kick off your mirror, bikerer have that same feeeling towards pedestrians who are always in the way of the cyclingpath, no matter what, and also... they know they are better protected by law.. when a cyclist hits a pedestrain...same goes fr the car vs bike.. so... yeah.. better lay back, take easy and let the nimrods pass, hahaha!!

11:46 why not? Netherlands could..and they had the same kind of cities usa has 2024.. Netherlands chsnged in the 1970's, retail owners need to realise that cars don't buy their goods..paoplpe do, and people take up less space then a car does, and you get more poeple in a city by bicycles, because they take up less space to park.. on any parked car..in USA a pick-up truk, you can fit 10 bycicles on that parking spot, 10 times more custumors, and the how, to take away what they bought? Hey there is also a sollution for that, because it has been working like this for over 40 years.. now my city Groningen has shop owners staggering lke in the 1970's, because city wants bicycles reduced... and just as in the 1970's thye screaam that customers will stop coming to their stores, but that decline didn't happen int he 1970's .. more people came and mor egoods where sold.. now the same thing will happen again :) I'm not a left wing enthousiast, but on this point they where right... people do the shopping and car or bike or none of that, they will get their wares home, and ofcourse there are the services of the stores. There is a covid-shot promo video of Groningen "The Most Walkable City inthe World" and streets where full, less bikes, the people buy the goods, not the cars!

Americans could fit in micro cars, the Dutch are the tallest peoples, and they manage fine, even Eddie Hall (who is pretty massive) managed to fit into the world's smallest production car! I'd ignore the teasing, but culture shifts are possible, Americans have adapted many new technologies in the past, riding a cargo bike or a micro car shouldn't make you embarrassed, I learned to ride a unicycle as an adult on my street and I got over feeling self-conscious pretty quickly, people were just interested in it, one guy wanted to hold himself up on it and get a picture! Only a minority of small, pathetic people will tease you, and they are not worth caring about as they are just small, petty people whose every opinion should be ignored!

We didn't dump cars over bikes. We were always a bicycle/walking country. I think if America give less money to the army and more to improve public transportation and infest in the infrastructure, you guys would be able to ban cars.

How? Well, start by making your country wealthy in terms of per capita income. Then make it only 41849 Km². Then concentrate your population into 522 people per Km². After that it is pretty easy. The US is becoming more sustainable, but it won't look anything at all like the Netherlands. Or the Nordic countries. Or Britain or France or Germany.
