There was talk originally of the brand new 2022 F1 car being over 3 seconds slower than what we saw last year... but predictions have changed. Why?

It will be interesting to see how the engineers cope with the new aero regs. But the tyre testing has been promising, in that drivers can push harder for longer. I think that the new cars will have a quali defecit of around 1 second but because of the more durable rubber there will be less pace management, meaning drivers will be flat out during race stints for much longer, so any deficit will be pretty much made up by that. Also the team fuel suppliers will have also done extensive research on minimizing BHP losses from the fuel regs. Also there is one more round of small PU upgrades available ahead of final homologation so improvements can be made there. Even after final homologation teams can tweak designs for reliability and cost saving, even if it brings a performance gain (subject to FIA approval)
@kohikappu
@kohikappu 2 жыл бұрын
Not quite sure but will the ground effect be more effectively being used for the teams to find for some loopholes around the regulation? I thought this might be the case if you were to be the engineers for the team, you basically wanted the fastest car on track by using the same regulation but without intervention as for the whether how it should be done on purpose. And despite FIA already have their own way to inspect each car and finalize its change priori and posteriori, I wouldn't doubt that those teams wouldn't have played with it fair and square. But then again, improvements are needed to be faster on the track. And I'm not sure if the 2022 car's RPM would've chased the deficit that being 'gained' from last year, but the tires management could also be as crucial as race strategy despite of a way more lasted stint on tires.
@matt_acton-varian
@matt_acton-varian 2 жыл бұрын
@@kohikappu The ground effect tunnels are heavily regulated on safety grounds but there is some wiggle room for designers to maximise performance gains. F1 engineers have always found ways to exploit loopholes, and the regulations have been written to minimise that risk. Also, the inherent trait of ground effect is that it a much more aerodynamically efficient way to produce downforce, meaning that the reduced drag from that will offset the drag caused by the simplified wings and barge boards. As for the engine RPM, these are still the same engines as used for the last few years (all be it much more refined in design) and still have the capacity to reach the same speeds. The loss of horsepower comes from the change in fuel requirements, they have doubled the required ethanol content to 10%. Whilst still highly flammable, ethanol is not as powerful as the other combustibles in the fuel blend. The fuel power loss is incidental, as the fuel regulations were implemented for environmental reasons. The primary byproduct of burning ethanol is water so a higher ethanol fuel produces less CO2 emissions. F1's long term environmental and sustainability plan means at some point in the future F1 will switch to high grade biofuels with a lower net carbon footprint than current fossil fuels.

I'm not yet ready to give up hope that the optimum strategy will float between 2 and 3 stops per race, so tires being "too good" feels counter-productive to me. That said, pit strategy is less important if there is more overtaking and wheel-to-wheel action. So I can be persuaded. Either way, I'm excited for 2022 just to see who rises and who falls. Hopefully, the constructors fight will be an open field and not the yawnfest it's been lately.
@matt_acton-varian
@matt_acton-varian 2 жыл бұрын
@@grayaj23 the tyres will still have a similar mileage limit to the last iteration as they wear but they have a larger optimum temperature operating window, meaning they can take more punishment before overheating, and that they require a bigger drop off in temperature before graining. They are only more durable against premature degradation, not lifespan. Softs will still only last 10-20 laps depending on circuit length and surface type.

don't care about lap times, just don't want an obnoxious wake behind the cars which makes it easy to lead and impossible to pass. if a car is 1 second a lap faster, they should be able to drive nose to tail for 3-4 laps and not destroy the following cars tires. In aviation the term "ground effect" refers to the effect the ground has on the plane as it descends. It's called that because as the plane nears the ground, the air beneath the wings begins to push the plane up somewhat due to the effect of the ground on the airflow. F1 should call it reverse ground effect if they want to be more accurate.

My only concern is how different are the teams in terms of speed. Funnily enough, dirty air helped the competition by giving slower cars a tool to keep faster cars behind them. Not a powerful tool, but one nonetheless. This is how Russell and Latifi were able to keep quicker cars behind them in Russia and Hungary. If everyone is similar in performance, no issue, but if we have a hierarchy, as we normally do, the quicker cars will be able to pass the slower cars way faster than before, without anything to even the fight. I'm nonetheless glad F1 figured out a way to get rid of dirty air, but just be prepared if we see a tiny bit less fighting. I'm hopeful tho

When they've slowed down the cars in the past you only notice it for a couple of races.

For me, F1 is about the Racing. Racing involves battles. As long as they can fight and overtake each other without resorting to "Ha, I came into the pits first", I'm happy. They could be racing VW Beetles for all I care, speed wise. Just. Give. Me. Action. I'm tired of casual Sunday Drive appearances because of it being too difficult to follow each other.

Ground effect will increase the cornering speed. So I wouldn’t be surprised if they are faster.

wishing all teams catch up onto each other and not just seeing 2 to 4 teams always the near podium places. I'm literally excited for this season and it might even be faster than last years F1... "might".

So that means they are slower in the corners but a rocket in straight line like 2004 or 2015 2016 cars

Anything within 5 seconds is fine *if* we get more wheel-to-wheel moments and more overtakes. It's possible that the new ground effects could be as strong or stronger than the 1980s were, but without launching cars into space when the GE fails. That would be amaaaaaaaazing.

Personally I’m a firm believer of encouraging the fastest, most sophisticated pieces of equipment to be designed and leave it on the drivers to control it and see what they can do with the car. However, and it’s a big one, I would never like to see safety sacrificed for speed. I’ll use Group B as an example, it was amazing and nothing will be like it and I love it, but that doesn’t mean it needs to come back. That’s my opinion :)

What’s going to be crazy is all of this with DRS still in play. Ground effect DRS is going to look like cheat mode

I can't find a good explanation anywhere why the 2022 ground effect is more stable then the older generation. The skirts I get but what about hitting curbs or the height of cars changing because of the expanding hot air in the tires?
@bocahdongo7769

Rather, it sealed by normal turbulence air by the skirt Pretty much like how "ground effect" on flat floor F1 works, but it produce locally instead of from front wing or barge board.

If the cars arent slower F1 have messed up badly. The biggest problem with dirty air isnt the way the cars generate downforce but the speed of the cars themselves.
