Just need to remind you that you need to be extra careful in presenting your narratives. What you measure is the outcome, the trash that comes out from those rivers, but you don‘t analyze the source. Currently, countries like Malaysia becomes the world‘s trash bins, as developed countries are exporting their trash to these countries with lack of waste management infrastructure. When you are not careful, your explanation kind of imply that only people living in these countries 'create' the trash and contribute to pollution. People in landlocked countries or developed countries have no business and they will keep shifting all the blame to these countries. This will seriously harm our progress to reduce plastic pollution.

Here is a guy who could have done anything with his life. He certainly had the entrepreneurial spirit to create any startup, make and sell some great products, make some millions or billions. But no. Unlike most, he was able to focus on what matters, created a non-profit and went on to tackle not only one of the hardest problems out there, but also one of the most important. This is the kind of people we need. What a guy and what a team.

@@abhi36292 Oh absolutely I think educating people is very important. I made my comment because I am very worried. I think alot about solutions but I always end up thinking about the rootcause which to me comes back to better waste management and missing powerplants in very poluting regions. Because only a very limited amount of plastic can be recycled and only a small part of that is worth to recycle in terms “energy” needed to recycle.

Well it's shocking for me because I'm a Malaysian youth and I know the issue of river pollution and excessive use of plastic exist in Malaysia. I just didn't know it's this serious. Actually I haven't done any research on what government did but it can be sure that they r definitely not doing enough for enforcement. Education wise, I am trying to go zero-waste myself and I know some of my friends really care for the environment too, I think environmental education in geography, moral, and some activities like recycling competition organised by the school shape this mindset in us unknowingly. For animal cruelty, it exists in many countries, not just Malaysia, from dog meat trade, to cruel research on primates or owls, to the most common meat industry. IT IS really sad how some humans we are above other animals and have the authority to determine their life and death.

@@functionalvanconversion4284 I can tell you more on this issue of not losing hope. Here in Russia we have ridiculously low rate of recycling, and almost everyone says it's impossible to make our people sort garbage. However in my city, if you want some of your garbage to get recycled, you can once a week bring it to a collection point, which is a big van that arrives at a certain place at a certain time. You just have to bring it there sorted and, you are not paid for that, it's absolutely volunteery. It seemed to be a failure project from scratch, but who would believe so many people will be bringing their garbage making 2-3 miles even at cold Russian winter to transmitt it for free! A lot of the issues comes from waste management - there are a lot of communities near rivers that have never seen a garbage truck in their life, and they have no option but to create landfills wherever they can, even on the river banks, and when the water level rises, it washes off the garbage into the river. I'm sure that most of these people wouldn't want to live surrounded by trash, and it's not down to individual persons to solve the problem, but the local governments (that often don't have the resources to improve waste management) as well as activist organisations and global environmental agencies. Many first-world countries have the resources to solve this waste crisis, but it is not a priority for them.

I’d love it if you considered Rivers that are maybe not so heavy in pollution (ex. I have been to Green Events on the Hudson River and had the chance to meet passionate people deeply concerned with your mission. The idea to launch an interceptor in Rivers that connect cities and states and view them as crowd funding opportunities not only from the local government but also from the people that live there that have higher incomes to donate to this cause. The idea to uses a few interceptors as a way to market and grow public awareness in wealthier communities could hold great potential in helping you exceed your $500k goal. Which could drastically help fund more advancements to engineer larger scaled models to launch in the Ocean Cleanup for the garbage patches. Sorry It’s late here but I thought I should share this to someone on your team. I love what you all are doing.

This is a good information making more clear where is the knot of this trouble. The waste comes from poor riverside villages, than thanks if they have something to eat and totally improbable that they dispose of strong garbage bags, then the waste is simply thrown anywhere and with strong winds or strong rains that are frequent in this places, all this waste have easily access to the rivers. Big Problem!!!. Or their governments they distribute strong bags to the people and pick up this from a boat, together with a new way in a markets for to buy like I was saying the other day, or this not is near of ending. Maybe some fundation or organization can to donate strong bags for this villages, and for other side in the world there are so much old boats that maybe not can to be used for your main destiny and can be used for this normal garbage collection. This is a great work relocating things. But for the moment fantastic work in this info you have done Boyan!!✌️✌️👌✌️✌️ ___________________ Sorry, bacause I am saying that any fundation can to donate, but yourself can to manufacture strong bags with the plastic you is recycling on the Pacific Ocean area. There is no reason these goals aren’t intertwined. Environmentalism and the space industry may seem like conflicting goals based on where they came from, but they can fit together nicely. Many of the satellites used today to study weather, carbon emissions, and Sahara dust blows to the Amazon are only possible due to the space industry’s newer launch vehicles. Space can continue to grow for the environmental movement too - it is possible to produce baseline solar power that are beamed to collectors on the ground (aka space-based solar power), and the movement of our heavy industry off-world would save much of the environmental degradation metal mining produces today. Not to mention secondary effects on sustainability - hydroponic research, water reclamation technologies, and air filtration tech are all byproducts of space research. So, there is synthesis between the fields. I do wish this got more press, and TOC is making the problem of plastic pollution “sexy” for our media culture, the same way Musk did with space launch costs. It’ll get there. 😊

I applaud this plastic waste intervention. From the data we can see how individual country contributes to this pollution, be it being having more river systems and demographic distribution along the river banks but also how the country manages waste itself. Lack of drinkable tapped water also increases the use of plastic bottles dramatically. Like carbon emission, use of plastic bags and bottles must be regulated! Last but not least, investments into portable tap water must be made!
