How the Old Testament Humanizes Women: Dr. Katie McCoy

Dr. Katie McCoy serves as Director of Women’s Ministry at The Southern Baptist Convention, Texas. She holds a PhD in systematic theology and her research focuses on Old Testament laws about women and justice for the vulnerable. Her most recent book is To Be a Woman: The Confusion Over Female Identity and How Christians Can Respond. In this conversation, we look at the startling statement about female captives in war from Deuteronomy 21:10-14 and the seemingly strange laws regarding women who have recently given birth from Leviticus 12:1-4.

I beliee that there are other verses in the old testament that talk about taking moabite/other pagan wives as a way for their line not to die out. That was very important to ancient people- that their people and their blood not totally die out. So in a way, allowing the men to take moabite/pagan wives allowed their bloodline to continue.

Honestly, I just wonder if when the family had a boy if there were celebrations that took place at the 40 days that required the mother to be present and thus her resting time was cut short. Rituals or celebrations related to inheritance, etc. So I wonder if its less a case that a girl baby had double time, but that a boy baby the woman's rest period was cut short. That makes more sense to me from a cultural context.

I'm gonna regret this. Doesn't the title suggest that women are presupposed to be inhuman for the bible needing to humanize them? It sounds like an extreme form of misogyny if a person assumes women aren't even human.

@@shenronded Even in the first book, Genesis, God states that men and women are made in God's image. So men and women are perfectly equal spiritually. A woman could only be given the authority by God to execute a man for his sin, if women are spiritually equal to men. A Judge could judge homicide cases according to Deuteronomy. Therefore Deborah, as a Judge, could execute a man for his sin. Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel at that time. She used to sit under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim; and the sons of Israel went up to her for judgment. -excerpt Judges 4
