"The Albanians, these tigers of mountain wars ... have as their religion rebellion. Even their worst warrior is one of the strongest and bravest on the battle-field, just as if he was a knight on the legendary horse. But he has no horse, nor proper weapons for battle. Instead of the horse, he has a lance which strikes as lightning, he has spears who's points are full of posion as the sting of hornets, he has also a wooden bow with some arrows. Furthermore, he is stronger than iron ... " - Ibn Kemal, Historian of the Turkish court during Skanderbeg's war against the Turks "The Albanians have been born to resist and disobey." - Dursam Bey, during the second siege of Kruja They are strewn with the wreckage of dead Empires-past Powers-only the Albanian "goes on for ever." - Edith Durham "They are Nietzsche's over-men, these primitive Albanians - something between kings and tigers." - Henry Noel Brailsford "The true history of mankind will be written only when Albanians participate in it's writing." - Maximilian Lambertz "The story of the Albanians deserves a study in itself. Attracted by the 'sword, the gold trappings, and the honours, they left their mountains chiefly in order to become soldiers. In the sixteenth century they were to be found in Cyprus, in Venice, in Mantua, in Rome, in Naples, and Sicily, and as far abroad as Madrid, where they went to present their projects and their grievances, to ask for barrels of gunpowder or years of pension, arrogant, imperious, always ready for a fight." - Nicholas Pappas "...isn't the Albanian, who, being a slave, did not allow enslavement, freedom-loving? This is a question that could hardly be understood by anyone who has not lived in Albania. The most liberty-loving people in the Balkans is the Albanian people. The Albanian, taken alone, as an individual, is an anarchist by nature. He would brook no bondage let alone on his people, he would not let anything, seen as possibly humiliating, befall his house. The Albanian house stands alone and apart from the rest..." - Description from a brilliant Bulgarian observer and connoisseur of Albania. (1924) Albanians are considered untouchable on the slave market because of their strong feelings for honour and the need for revenge. - Pasha Sulejman the Lightened They may be only soldiers, but never let them get close to your plate, and don't make them kneel before you, if you don't intend to capitate them. - Pasha Sulejman the Lightened

Catholics and Sultans: The Church and the Ottoman Empire 1453-1923. Cambridge University Press. p. 33. The House of Kastrioti (Albanian: Dera e Kastriotëve) was an Albanian noble family, active in the 14th and 15th centuries as the rulers of the Principality of Kastrioti. At the beginning of the 15th century, the family controlled a territory in the Mat and Dibra regions. Exemple : Great grandfather = Kostandin Kastrioti Mazreku (died ca. 1390) was an Albanian 🇦🇱 regional ruler in parts of the wider Mat and Dibër areas. Grandfather = Pal Kastrioti was an Albanian 🇦🇱 medieval ruler in the latter part of the 14th century in northern Albania. Source : Genealogy of the Kastrioti family, Du Cange (1680), Historia Byzantina duplici commentario Even the Serbs of the time considered Skanderbeg as Albanian, his father (Gjon) was buried in an Orthodox monastery, the Serbs named the tower where he is buried "Albanian tower 🇦🇱"... source : ( Himelstir. p. 45 ) Moreover, even the descendants of Skanderbeg from the Arbëresh community qualify as Albanians 🇦🇱 and not as Serbs ... Example : Shopie Castriota, loris Castriota etc ... Alessandro Cutolo ( Italian historian ) : " Gjon ( father of Skanderbeg ) married Princess Vojsava, the daughter of another excellent Albanian🇦🇱 leader, the Lord of Polog " . Source : in is work "Skanderbeg" , p.20, published in Milan (Italy) in 1940. His mother ( Skanderbeg )came from the Muzaka family (Albanian) and not from the Brankovic family ... Father was Gjon Kastrioti, son of Pal Kastrioti. Mother was Voisava from the Muzaka-Family (as stated in the memoires of Gjon Muzaka written sometime before 1510) Documents from that time only state that she was an albanian. There are no serbian documents that state she was serbian. In his memoires Gjon Muzaka (before 1510) wrote that she is a muzaka. We only have two sources from that era that give us a hint of her origin. One is geographically and the other is ethnically . Geographic source: barleti wrote that it was from polog. Member of a noble house and tribal leader. Why tribal and not Serbian? First of all, the triballi were an ancient Thraco-Illyrian ( Albanian ) tribe. The same name was again used in the Middle Ages / Byzantine era for the inhabitants of the ancient tribal area. All the people who lived in this area were called triballi (Albanians, Bulgarians and Serbs). (And let's not forget that the Tribalians were Slavised for the majority ... But remained Thraco-Illyrian/Albanian in their blood ...) Today, the majority of Albanians in Macedonia live in the Polog region (the eastern part of Macedonia). Exemple : Appianus Alexandrinus (is a Greek historien of the Roman period) who qualified the Triballians of "Illyrian origin". Source : "historia Romana". Stephanus of Byzantium ( Great lexicographer of Constantinople, lived in the 6 th century), was written in the year 528-545, declares that the "Triballians are Illyrian. Source : From Urbibus and Populis. Other authors such as Strabo, Pliny, Ptolemy and Dion Cassius, state that the Triballians are of Thraco-Illyrian origin ( Pelasgians/Albanian ) Ethnical source: Gjon Muzaka wrote in his memoires that she was a muzaka. I think with the latter source we should conclude this whole discussion. As it is a very close source - chronological and physical. The person in this case Gjon Muzaka knew Voisava personally and he fought besides Skanderbeg and skanderbegs son. So he wouldnt dare to write something he would later regret right ? He wrote those memoires sometime before 1510 so basically before the book of barleti was printed.

His remains are unknown because it was stolen when they were being transported to Greece to be buried there by Ptolmey who buried him in Alexandria. We know during the Roman period that his body was still in Alexandria because Julius Caesar visited it, along with future Roman Emperors. The very great Venetian 18th century composer Antonio Vivaldi wrote an opera about Scanderbeg and it premiered in 1718.Unfortunately only the libretto (the words)survives and most of the music has been lost except one or two pieces.In the opera Scanderbeg is described as "the king of Albania."Venice of course occupied large areas of Albania for a long time.

@@vangelisskia214 That may have been poetic license because of the fact maybe that he had a Greek name-in the same way that Turks and Mongols etc were poetically known as "Scythians" e.g. Christopher Marlowe in his play about Timur (the Turco=Mongol conqueror)describes him as the son of a Scythian shepherd.Nowadays we know that the Scythians were Indo=Europeans and not Turco/Mongol like Tamerlane (Timur)

@@kaloarepo288 Firstly, "King of Albania" simply means the ruler of a particular geographic territory and surely doesn't mean that he was ethnically Albanian. Vivaldi only refers to Kastriotis as GREEK and never as Albanian or Sqipetar or whatever else is to your liking. There wasn't any Albanian-Sqipetar ethnic identity until the late 19th century. Albania (or Arberia or Arvanon) was simply a geographical term. In what is now Albania Orthodox Christians in the south considered themselves Greeks. Muslims self-identified as Turks. Only the few Catholics of the north started having some sort of a separate Latin identity during the Middle Ages, but again mostly based on their religious distinctiveness from other neighboring populations and later with the Ottoman conquest of the area and the huge conversion rate to Islam even there it atoned and disappeared. Schmitt, one of the most acknowledged modern expert scholars on Albanian studies, supports that ALL THROUGHT THE MIDDLE AGES AND THE OTTOMAN ERA "Albanian" or "Arvanitis" was simply a GENERIC AND NOT ETHNIC term and didn't necessarily refer only to the speakers of Albanian dialects but even to the numerous Greek-speakers or Vlach-speakers that resided in the geographic area of Arvanon. It even came to refer to Armed Units which were composed not only by Albanian speakers but also by Greek speakers, Slavic speakers etc.

Schmitt Jens Oliver (2009), Skanderbeg: Der neue Alexander auf dem Balkan, pp. 353, 354 "We remark that the term "Albanian" is not an ethnic qualification but, as the terms "Zouave" and "Dragon", is used as GENERIC to certain corps of infantry, formations of mercenaries recruited among Christians of Turkey. @@kaloarepo288 The Ottoman historian Ahmet Mufit in a book published in 1530 mentions Kastriotis as a Greek. A. Salvi in 1718 referred to Skanderbeg as a Greek (Greco). The Englishman C. Randall in 1810 called him a Greek Hero (Grecian Hero) and the Swedish Barrau initially and Rudbeck later (1835) considered Kastriotis as Greek. The History of the French historian Paganel (Paganel: Histoire de Scanderbey), published in Paris in 1855 clearly refers to him as a Greek. G. de Antonellis suggested Skanderbeg was a Greek Christian. Clement C. Moore, believed in the 19th century that "his father (John) was a Greek from Epirus"... Even Antonio Vivaldi in his Opera about Kastriotis mentions him as a Greek. "Skanderbeg's true status as a 'hero of the Albanian nation' is HARD TO PIN DOWN, due to the lack of primary sources. He has been CONSTRUCTED as a national figure by both non-communist Christian Albanians and by the atheist communists alike." Not to forget, Sulltan Murat died in Adrianopoja but he suffered the blow under KRUJAS wall, that is all documented. Can you find me something comparable?! Only 10 years after Scanderbeg's death could Otomani poor KRUJA, or conquer Albania. And only because at that time there were many conflicts between the Albanian princes, so they were no longer willing to resist together and therefore not strong enough, due to different interests.

@HikmaHistory2 жыл бұрын
His efforts might have been in vain but during his lifetime you can't call Skanderbeg "irrelevant". The scale of his victories, the cost of life for the Ottoman army and the fact that he could've been used as a proxy by European powers for their rivalry with the Ottomans - all these factors show that in his life time, Skanderbeg was super important whilst he was alive.

Albanians converted to Islam by masses for benefits during the next centuries and became the backbone of Ottoman Empire in Balkans and more. 54 times in 400 years of ottoman rule did revolt the Catholic mountaineers of Albania against the ottomans. Albanians did convert to Islam because they did gain much more than remaining christians: they ruled together with the invading rulers not only in Albania but also in the Balkans and the rest of the ottoman empire. They were able to invade and capture the invaders by becoming very influential politicians, rulers, grand viziers etc... I would go as far to say that the Albanians within the Ottoman Empire became what the Greeks became after they were conquered by the Romans. Surely the Albanians did not "invade" the ottomans through culture as the Greeks did with the Romans, but they achieved a great status by holding some of the most important political positions. The modern history of Turkey is a witness of that, and not to mention Egypt, Syria, and Lebanon. To say that Skenderbeg was irrelevant is intellectually dishonest and foolish. Skanderbeg demonstrated the Ottomans what the spirit of the Albanian is. The deep sense of loyalty they have. And within the European nations there is only one nation that has that deep sense of loyalty: the Germans. And when it comes to Skanderbeg's victories, it's useless to speak about that because history has already spoken. Skanderbeg is not as appreciated as he should be because his victories are defensive and not offensive. And however is a good student of history knows that offensive victories take all the fame.

@@uliks2434 you prove what I said about Albanians in Ottoman empire but you also cancel what you say . You said that Albanians converted for benefits and after you say Albanians are loyal. So where is their loyalty ? A loyal individual stays loyal at his beliefs till the end and through hardships. So, Albanians/loyalty = pick one. Skanderberg also was converted to Islam when he was captured by Ottomans and when they let him go he reconverted to Christianity. Same thing happened with Albanians in masses only for benefits. That happened in such scale only with Albanians, though all Balkan nationalities.

In Versailles was a Dutch diplomat who asked this same question to the Greek delegation. He asked about the fate of the over 25000 Muslims in Athens, what did happen to them? Where did they go suddenly? The other Balkan nations wiped out completely their Muslims unlike Albania. Another thing not to be forgotten is that Albanias differently from the other nations knew, and still do, to perform only one thing: fight. And what an empire needs is warriors. The conversation to Islam among the Albanians did not happen until the 1700. Conversion to Islam gave to the Albanians what the other nations could not afford: the rulers of the vilayets within Albania were all of Albanian ethnicity. Only in the first century or so the rulers were ottoman, everyone after that was Albanian. This gave them a certain kind of autonomy. Something that neither the Greeks not the Slavic people had, except Bosnia Hercegovina.

What did Albanians 🇦🇱 have before the Ottoman invasion? 1. Albanians had a University in 1380 in Durrës. To give you an idea: Germany opened its first university, 6 years after Durrës (Heidelberg University). 2. Albanians had 6 fully developed cities as much as Florence, Venice, Marseille or Paris. (Durrës, Shkodra, Drishti, Lezha, Berat and Preveza). 3. Albanians had the aristocratic class with 8 noble families (Balshaj, Topiaj, Muzakaj, Kastrioti, Arianiti, Zebenishta, Spataj and Dukagjini) connected by marriage even with the Habsburgs and the Bourbons. 4. Albanians had the humanist philosophers, who with their genius ideas, were advisers to the imperial families in Hungary, Italy and Austria (Gjon Gazhuli, Pal Ungjëlli, Leonik Tomeo and Gjon Durrsaku). 5. Albanian cities had statutes and were governed by democracy while at the same time America for example it was governed by the Cherokee Indians or the Aztec tribes who still drank human blood and lived as cannibals. 6. In Durrës, intellectualism was so high that we have documented in the 12th century for the first time the note of protest of an Orthodox Metropolitan, who writes to Constantinople, against slavery, 300 years before it started as a debate in Europe. 7. In Durrës, trade was done even with Tunisia, Ukraine and France, since the 5th century. While at the same time for example the Scandinavian countries still lived by worshiping the tree or the mountain. 8. The Church of Albania had issued a Cardinal (and a cardinal was no small thing then). What happened next? The Ottomans just came and for 500 years made that every Albanian forgot who they really were.

Fun fact : Pjetër Bogdani, an Albanian 17th century catholic clergyman said that : "the next Skanderbeg shall be a Muslim, if he fights for the right of the Albanian people he is a true successor of Skanderbeg" and funnily enough Andrea Manesi, Karamahmud Pasha, Zenel Gjoleka and Ahmet Zogolli all claimed to be a second coming of Skanderbeg while being Muslims.

I found many things common in Skanderbeg and Chatrapati Shivaji ... One of them is that they were never defeated by their enemies respectively ie Mughals and Ottomans

The format is not bad, but I dislike the change in voice. It's also means that when someone has a different tune it stands out like Jack (whom I love BTW) but it does work with the soft spoken voice of Hikma and the other channel. Just my opinion, good video nonetheless.

you know the balkan thing is just an excuse right, dont tell me you believe that, the ottomans had always at least a 3:1 advantage on skanderbeg, hell the ottomans were being led by their own small pp sultan with a army of 100k and still lost to less than 20k, dont give excuses and praise the man for what he is, a great military commander, probably one of the best to ever live, hella underrated and a 6/6/5 ruler on EU4
