Funny note about the post-punk label, the first thing tagged as post-punk, a 10/10 pere ubu single, is also tagged as proto-punk, both primary on rym.

I agree with your assessment 100%. The Pop Group hijacked my turntable in the lates 70s/early 80s. Every time I revisit their records, I am perpetually mesmerized by their brilliance. They had the same visionary courage as The Velvet Underground did in the 60s. Thanks for the wonderful video.

The first time I saw The Pop Group live was 1980. Liked all the incarnations ever since. On-U, Mark Stewarts Maffia etc etc One of my fave gigs ever was Adrian Sherwood live mixing a solo set by Keith Le Blanc in some tiny little pub in London.

The Pop Group song came up on my feed on KZbin and I listened to much much much Gratitude. I can't believe I had not heard of the band. I dig what I've heard in the last 30 minutes between that song, The Peel Sessions, and your description.

Ι love them. One of my favourite bands ever. Y is a true masterpiece, and I will agree with you that their second album is very underrated. Strange you didn't mention Savage Sea while talking about Y, really a standout track in the album, really stunning

Good video!!You are fare from stupid, or i'm stupid too.The Pop Group is one of my favorite, and yes, i saw them twice, from 2010.The last show in Bern,Switzerland few years ago, was total blow up!!Like in the old times, 40, maybe 50 people in a club, and they were fantastic, even without a bass player.The second guitarist did all the bass lines with a guitar, and the bass amp.There was a young guy on the mixer, and he did amazing job with mixing and effects!!! I wish I have recording of that night! And "For how much longer..." is one of my favorite album from the whole universe!!! Long Live The Pop Group!!!

Not mentioning Maximum Joy was a miss. Great band started by Dan Catsis and John Waddington after The Pop Group break-up; easily the most enjoyable out of Rip, Rig + Panic, New Age Steppers, and Mark Stewart/Maffia/solo.l (although I do appreciate them all).

The Pop Group remains a stirring affront on the status quo. Just that title of the first album gets to it. It won't do to simply ask the naive question of, "Why do we permit injustice?" If we want to be truly honest and august with each other, then we must also know "Y"... we must look into the very building blocks of the world we have built around us to understand what's wrong with us, to understand oppression, and maybe even glimpse real freedom. This music is not particularly listenable or satisfying. Don't put it on for somebody unless they're absolutely out of their minds. The Pop Group is an exhilarating confrontation with soaring, reckless creativity and soulful, delirious outrage. If Jim Morrison urged the listener to 'Break On Through To The Other Side'... then these lads blew the whole door off its hinges. And the further you scout around out there into the art world and politics you will find that Mark Stewart left an indelible imprint on an improbable array of notable figures. It's like Alan Vega... you wouldn't think that anybody would know about this absolute monster of a musician, but there he is, in fact, actually everywhere... growling just beneath the surface of this tidily kept moonscape.

This video actually made me like the Pop Group less. I don’t take my political views from records, even if I do happen to agree with them. It’s not why I listen to music, and I just do not want to hear about politics while I am listening to music.

A local band from here...southern Calif...GoGoGo Airheart...fully ripped off the Pop group... and I didn't find out until later, too late, and had thought gogogo were genius's.... not simply plagarists big mistake
@chunkrecords2 жыл бұрын
After listening to a few tracks .. no, I wouldnt say GGGA were plagiarists. They just followed the 00er trend for punk-funk with scratchy guitars and aggressive singing like The Rapture, !!!, Radio 4 or Head Automatica. Sure, Pop Group is one of the main influence for this kind of music, but also The Clash and Gang of Four, early A Certain Ratio..
