How the pros cut grass to perfection | Tournament prep at Irish championship golf club
Today we are at Belvoir Park Golf course to find out what it takes to run a modern day golf course and how to set up for Tournament prep, Belvoir Park is a parkland Irish championship golf level club having hosted the Irish Open. I met up with Aaron Small the course manager for behind the scenes on how the course is prepared for Tournament prep.
Belvoir Park Golf club was running a scratch cup and Aaron invited me down to film the course getting set up for the scratch golf competition, he and his staff were in on a Saturday evening getting the course cut, they were there well into the dark before finishing and then there the following morning very early. I didn't join them until 7 am on Sunday morning.
How the course is prepared for Tournament prep
How to stripe the grass
What height the greens are cut at
How to achieve low heights of cut
How to feed a golf green
How to measure greens speed with a stimpmeter
How to increase greens speed
Golf course maintenance
This the first in a series of videos filmed at Belvoir Park Golf Club, in future videos we will be covering the costs behind running a busy golf course, machinery, and the costs involved in running a busy modern-day golf course. The series will feature golf course construction with golf architect William Swan from Swan Golf Designs and CRL (Clive Richardson Limited).

So much more to it than you think. I’m a member of a golf club and this makes me appreciate the job done by the green team. I wouldn’t want 45000 people on my lawn every year!

Yes, its a busy course. Though it also generates a lot of money at over £100 a round. The final video of the series is about how much they spend every year on the course

Yes and No, you can show people what we do and how we do it but they dont know why, especially anything to do with chemicals or the maintenance practices we preform. If someone wants a putting green or extremely tight fairway for a lawn which isnt hard to do but they will still need to d I certain things and why we do it. Number 1 issue I see with home lawns is leveling, they put down way to much sand at once and continue to do so overtime, this will leading to layering in the soil down the road, punching holes at the same depth over and over also will lead to layering, we punch holes from 10 to 12 inches deep up to 3 inches deep to prevent that and countless other reasons. Micro and macronutrients in your soil is just as important as anything else. Most of this doesnt apply to people who have normal lawns cut higher without turf grass. Controlling excess thatch, proper watering, always water longer instead of watering a little each day this causes short roots. Spraying chemicals can be a challenge, you need to know math and calibrate the sprayer, spraying not enough is a waste, to much can cause big problems, washing a sprayer out is just as important. Showing people or just telling someone really isnt enough until they know why and how, most people with these golf course lawns go the extra mile and learn this, lots dont and waste money, they believe its just water and fertilizer, mow when it gets tall when everything should have a schedule

What a beautifully presented course. No wonder so many good golfers have come out of Belvoir Park over the years. As others have stated here, greenkeepers are the unsung heroes of golf, but when we are struggling to keep our tiny little lawns in shape we begin to appreciate what they do every week in all sorts of weathers.

I've been a keeper for over 23 yrs ...the last 10 or less ,I have often wondered WHY every fairway should be cut the same .....would it not be more visually acceptable to cut in different cutting designs , pertaining to the individual holes ? eg cross-cut here, straight out Tee-to green there , links ie dark/ light here & there, wiggles& waggles here & there ..of course all depending upon par , be it 3,4,or 5 ...or is it because, THE MEMBERS DECIDE, WHAT THEY WANT , REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE HEAD GREENKEEPER DECIDES ?
