As someone who hasn't watched the show since around the beginning of season 3 was airing, learning about the redesigns gave me whiplash. Like, wow they really did change a lot when I wasn't able to watch cable for... Almost a decade maybe? I didn't know they already changed Zane's design significantly in season 4 so that was a big surprise to learn as well. For the redesigns, they all look great except I do have some nitpicks with Jay's. I love Jay's new hairstyle and the fact he has freckles now but little me thought the eyebrow notch was really cool at the time and knowing that they got rid of it kinda makes me a little bit sad because he was my favorite ninja back then. Honestly, seeing your videos make me want to watch Ninjago again! Though I'm a tiny bit afraid cause I've heard rumors about Jay in later seasons that make me a little worried lol.

Redesign are pretty good I finish watching Lego Ninjago (not the Masters of Spinjitzu I watched that a while ago) But after watching the show I kinda grew the likeing to the redesigns.

The only complaints I still have about the new designs are Jay losing his eyebrow notch, Jay's hair drastically changing colour, Kai’s plaster (bandaid) that he seriously needs to take off and while Nya's hair is much better in every way, I don't like that it is the same as Pixal and Tox's old hair

The only 3 nit-picks I have with the redesigns are that: -they removed Jay's eyebrow notch. -didn't give Nya a unique hair peace -(from season 11 onward) remived Cole's lazy eyes (they where added in season 8)

Another thing is that Kai's og show hair wasnt even made with the sets in mind and when they made it, it wasnt accurate so it wasnt made to last, it had to be redesigned.

Since Kai’s modern hairpiece was made for the movie, and didn’t have the show in mind, it isn’t accurate to the show either. It is dark brown in the sets while it’s reddish brown in the show. It also is way taller in the sets/movie which I don’t like. Luckily, the headband hairpiece is accurate in length, just not color.

I thought the new designs were very jarring at first, but I did get used to them after awhile. After all this time, I do prefer most of the new designs over the old ones. I have a few complaints like Kai having a permanent Band Aid on his face is kind of weird but overall they’re pretty good. Except for Jay’s. I think Jay‘s old design was way better. His new one isn’t bad by any means but I just think the old one was a lot better. A part of it could also be how I associate Jays new design with how horribly flanderized he’s become. New Jay and old Jay are two completely different characters

Can't stress enough how on point you are with this video. I stopped watching Ninjago exactly after they changed the designs because i loved the old looks so much, but since watching your channel about everything that happens in the newer seasons, I've been really gaining some hope for the franchise again. I grew to love the movie designs! Though I remember having some gripes about Cole. I really loved his green ghost scar look from Hands of Time, I felt like removing that took away some of his individuality. I also don't really enjoy how the movie and the season 8 redesigns set a precedent for "sleeveless" Cole - sleeveless designs feel like "training" outfits to me, as opposed to a full Ninja uniform. Still, his new hair was nice to see.

i don't understand why people criticise the ninjago movie so badly; it's easy to take it as just a funny au of the canon franchise. look at the lego movie, heck look at the lego BATMAN movie. those were pure crack, the ninjago movie is no different. sure , there's a ton of canon divergence, but isn't it nice to see what the ninja's life COULD'VE looked like if they had an element (haha) of normal teenage life?

SOG was one of my first seasons( along with season 7 and the special of Dotd, and bits of season 5) so it was easy to understand the new things, I even watched the other seasons to understand the references to past things( such as Garmadon father bond with Lloyd or when they mentioned the possibility of flying pirates lol, even tho only Jay and Nya remembered it)

The whole redesign thing reminds me of how people felt about the art style change from Ben 10 UAF to Omniverse, where OV was basically deemed childish by many fans due to the art style being different than what we’re used to even though it’s arguably way better. The fight scenes felt less stiff and more fluid and even better choreographed, the redesigns of nearly every character and alien was an improvement for the most part, and the show itself was pretty good despite the art style change.

I’m tired of the Movie Design VS OG Designs debate. Guys, just because the designs changed doesn’t mean that the post movie seasons are all bad. There are bad post movie seasons (like Season 11) and there are bad Pre-Movie Seasons (like Hands of Time). Sure designs can make or break something, but you can’t judge a book by its cover. There’s more than just the character designs, like how they are portrayed (which is why stuff like The Angry Birds Movie 2 sucks. While something like Hero of the Rails was a pretty good Thomas Special.)

Something that I like about the new designs is how they all got brand new custom designed hair pieces. All the old designs (except Kai) used super basic existing Lego hair pieces, probably because they only wanted the show to last two seasons

I really like the redesign. I remember when I watched season 8, I kind of reacted neutrally, I was very surprised, but it wasn't like I was like "they ruined my childhood!" And Nia's redesign made her my favorite ninja.

my big thing is that looking back, the actual base models used for the original designs are severely dated. The heads are rounded on the sides, the shoulders droop, the hands are flat and have no taper, they’re very jello-y looking lego minifigs and I defend the redesigns solely because they looked more like how an actual lego minifigure is built A really good quality of life thing they did in season 8 was reuse the facial rigs from each character. The most obviously being Kais asymmetrical mouth, Zane’s straight face, and Lloyds smirk (even tho his mouth doesn’t really look the same)

My issue isn’t with the designs but moreso the overall aesthetic. Best I can explain it is in materials. The old aesthetic looked like actual Lego, as in ABS plastic. The new aesthetic more looks like a matte rubber to me. It doesn’t look right. Lego should be shinier.

Old ninjago is just objectively better. Lego has done some incredible things in recent years, while ninjago has felt more and more boring and uninteresting. It wouldn’t have survived this long without the first few seasons

At first, the new designs were the reason I didn't watch the show after hands of time. Also cartoon network didnt promote or even show the later seasons for some reason. But when it was released on netflix, I watched sons of garmadon, and I was so amazed in the darker tone of the show. The new design for lloyd worked best for him.

and as for why in the show, i think it's because of Season 7 and it's Time Travel. they changed very few things, causing them to look different and lose Elemental Dragons & Airjitzu. Cole did say "we could look totally different, and not even know it."

There are genuine reasons to not like the new character designs, and it doesn't involve nostalgia. (This is gonna be a long rant.) My first problem is the rule of character design. You gotta to be able to look at a character and get the gist of their personality or archetype. People who argue for the new designs use that as their argument, saying the new ones give the ninja more personality. I call BS. The designs are taken from the movie versions of the Ninja, but they are only similar to the show versions in name and powers only. In the show, Kai is a competitive hothead, Jay is a loudmouth jokester, Zane is the logical one but lacks social skills, Cole is a tough guy with a big heart, Nya is a confident genius, and Lloyd is a troublemaker turned hero. The movie versions are damn near the opposite. Jay is awkward instead of outgoing, Kai is friendly and has no edge to him, Cole is way more mellowed out, Zane is just a robot, Nya is only the cool girl, and Lloyd is a loner with dad issues. This is not even me lying just to mislead y'all. Go back and watch the movie, Lloyd is the only one with any real personality further than what I described. They gave the designs of these characters to the show ones when they're completely different. They don't fit the show versions at all. You can argue the show designs where plain, I actually agree with that to an extent, but you're not convincing me that the movie versions somehow fit them better. My second problem is the show runner's reasoning. The creators put the movie designs in the tv show under the idea that it would bring in new fans. Except here's the thing, the movie barely brought any new fans. The Ninjago Movie isn't like the Lego Movie, where everybody loved it even if some fans didn't build Lego or played with them as a kid. The only people who really like the Ninjago movie are fans from the show, and even then, the movie wasn't that well received in our fanbase. So they resigned the characters to appeal to a damn near non-existent group of people. Let's say I'm wrong and people did come to the show through the movie. Most of them aren't gonna skip all the way to season 8 to see the designs they're used to. They're gonna go back and start with the pilots and go from there, meaning they'll be watching the old designs for a while. That's my take 🤷🏽‍♂️

Most of the designs are close to the original designs but are just more detailed like Lloyds or Zanes, your argument is that they dont fit simply because they were also used with other characters even though they still fit the characters in the show. The most drastic changes are Nya and Jay, and Jay's new design fits him in the show as does Nyas (and Nya also has the benefit of being able to use a half mask with the design so its objectively better)

i think making new characters always beats redesigning old ones. if you want change, this is the way to do it while keeping the character concepts of the original characters consistent. Plus, you can still have them mirror previous ones to a degree, but have more fredom to really go all out with new ideas

in the opening episode of sons of garmadon, either jay or cole (i cant remember specificially) literally said they can look completely different and not even know it - because hands of time, when Wu went into the past and got stuck there, that's why they are still the same characters but they look different since the past was slightly altered - kinda like in "wrong place wrong time" - i guess no one really pays attention or actually listens to what the story is saying

I remember watching the sneak peak of season 8 when I was like 12 and just seeing the new Lloyd thinking ”ok yeah this is just gonna be that ninjago movie again, screw this” and I never watched ninjago since. Apart from that, I didn’t just stop because it’s the move redesign, but because it was a redesign from the “OG designs” we all know and love. Even if Zane changed, they just swapped his colours.

I feel like most people dismiss it because it doesn’t fit into the canon but honestly I think as a movie it’s pretty fun and it gives a new perspective to the ninjago universe (some parts of it do make me wonder if any of the creators had even watched the show though like what were they thinking with those shark villains)

Me personally I liked the new designs with some exceptions(jay Zane) but it isn’t that bad plus you were spot on about Lloyd he needed that redesign course for someone who grew up with the Arabic version of ninjago he used to sound like a squirrel and he seems way more matured and older in the redesigned seasons and nya looks wayyy younger too she looked like she had wrinkles in the old design To sum up your opinion was quite reasonable and logical and was quite mind changing since I wasn’t a fan of the redesigns at first but now I think it’s a life saver

There is actually a canonical explanation for the face redesign which was caused by the time twins and Wu messing around with the timeline after season 7. This was hinted at in Season 8 in a discussion between Jay and Cole, where they weren't sure if they looked different to how they used to.

I gotta say, the Prime Empire costumes were friggin fire, I loved them so much and hated that they were gone after the season, one thing that they can also do is bring back old costumes, like with the tournament of sources they could've brang back the costumes that they used to have when the ninja were inside the tournament of elements, with making new costumes like we see other new characters get while bringing back the old costumes that people loved.
