On today's Star Wars Legends Episode of Battle Breakdown, we take a closer look at the Battle of Coruscant, as featured in Revenge of the Sith and the Clone Wars.
The Battle of Coruscant saw the Republic defend Coruscant from the CIS, the fleet destroyed the Invisible Hand, while Anakin and Obi Wan rescued rescued Palpatine.

On the colors I see nothing wrong with it, the old way worked fine too mostly. It could be confusing in, was it last video, when both sides used similar dreadnoughts. So yea colored is probably best

EckhartsLadder I have a suggestion about when you doing these strategy analysis videos. You were talking about how you can't make a whole bunch of icons representing multiple ships. You and spacedock seem to really love spaceships enough that you probably know what Starship board games look like. Whenever they need to represent a cluster of ships that usually have one or two or three shifts all linked together on the same platform. Now this is a video you could just stick a bubble with a line next to it linking it to the icon of the ship and then state that that particular ship represents a fleet and then put a number on how many ships. I don't know maybe that will work for you maybe not. I just thought I'd put my two cents in.

The battle of Coruscant was definitely a masterstroke by Palps. There was no way it could have happened without him (he gave the CIS the hyperspace routes), and there was no way the CIS could have known about the secret fleets, thus ensuring a Republic (aka. future empire) victory. Now, not only are the citizens of the capital terrified, they will turn to their brave leader, who was cool under pressure, and who's forethought saved their government and lives.

Justafan IV the biggest problem with the battle of Coruscant is that it literally makes no sense to keep Palpatine alive if you are General Grevious. Since the clone wars TV series hadn't happened at this point in the Star Wars timeline the direct relationship between Doku and Grevious isn't really explained. If Grevious was leading the attack and it would have been common knowledge that Palpatine was very pro-military the best move strategically would have been to eliminate him and cause a larger amount of chaos allowing the CIS to capitalise on a very politically unstable republic.

I disagree, the CIS doesn't want to conquer the Republic, it wants the war to end with the Republic acknowledging their secession and respecting their legitimacy. Palpatine is de facto dictator at this point, which means he is in a position to grant them their demands. If they kill him, power would vest in someone else, and while the Republic would be shocked, they would probably still fight on with good 'ole Sheev being the perfect martyr. However, with Palpatine at the CIS's mercy, they would be in a prime position to begin negotiating a favorable peace, either with Palps himself, or the Senate. Palpatine is the perfect bargaining chip, and probably the thing that would put the Republic over the edge in deciding fighting secession just isn't worth it.

Cause Charging battle-lines is suicide. In the Age of Cannons and Sail they found out that sailing right up against the enemy and blasting with cannons will hurt you as much as the enemy, Therefore most battles are trading salvos at range or fought using fighters and bombers.

To be fair, Palpatine was prepared for every possibility, whether Republic or the CIS won. If Grievous had followed up the devastating victory at Duro with a knockout blow, Palps would sue for peace, with him somehow maintaining all his power. He truly was the master of 4D Chess.

Legends Grievous could have definetely caused Palps to sue for peace. He was treated as such a serious threat to the Republic that most of them agreed the war would not end as long as he was around. And they were terrified at that. Canon Grievous though is basically "Oh that guy. He annoys us. Let's deal with him."

I love the use of distinct colors for each faction's fleet. Beyond the aesthetic quality, it really clarifies the overall scope of the battle, the comparative size of the fleets involved, and makes it easier to distinguish each faction's fleet from the others, especially in battles where there's more than two factions involved - the Battle of Bilbringi, perhaps? ;)

@@MegaBradster1 Might be a product of Empire at War... In the expansion, the rebellion was red and the Empire was blue. The same color scheme was applied to multiple clone Wars mods- the Republic was red and the Seppies were blue

The CIS ships are painted blue, yet fire red lasers. Though in the board game, Star Wars Armada, they leave Red for the pubbies and blue for the Seppies, going along with the ship colors as you dont see the lasers being fired.

СIS were designed to lose.... and they still put up much better fight (and war), than Empire and First Order. CIS didnt have big advantages over Republic (except for numbers), but CIS was only defeated because of Anakin killing all the leadership. They had many losses, but just as many victories. Empire and First Order had a giant advantage over rebels - and they lost almost every battle in movies, like complete morons.

They hunted down the rebels, destroying many of their bases (most notably hoth), destroyed nearly all of their starting fleet and half of their new fleet, and killed several of their highranking leaders including (Dodanna, Raddus, and Dravin). I'd argue that the only major victories the rebellion had was the battle of Yavin, Scarif and Endor. The first order basically wiped the floor with the resistance. Their only loss was starkiller base and the supremacy (and maybe a dozen star destroyers).

Especially when the Clones were so superior, the average trooper would get hundreds of confirmed driod kills before being injured or killed. If the CIS had more competent military commanders and less business leaders, maybe theyd have succeeded.

You can't compare the Clone Wars and the Galactic Civil War. The Clone Wars was much more black and White. Both sides owned many planets and had their own production line. They were fighting over planets and were aware of each others territory. And the CIS was already almost defeated when Anakin slaughtered their leaders. The Empire did not know where the Rebels were hiding most of the time. The Rebellion never tried to take the Empire head on. They did not try to concure planets or destroy entire fleets. They had just a few major victories and were constantly dominated by the Empire. The Empire only lost because the trap the Emperor set for the rebels failed.

I really think that without Palpatines games the CIS would have won here. It is obvious that the secret Fleet was nearby because of Palpatine ordering so. But I think even with them the CIS still had the upper hand. Only after the entering of the open-circle fleets and Obi-Wan and Anakin the Republic had a clear winning chance. I also think that the Republic troops got a moral boost that helped them win, when they heard that the two most famous Jedi were now in battle.

That goes both ways though: The CIS fleet would probably not have survived an attempt to breach the defended hyperspace routes (much less take the Home Fleet by surprise) in the first place without Palpatine's help, as it was Palpatine alone who knew the alternate hyperspace route used by the CIS, and it was Palpatine whom gave that information to the CIS (it's doubtful the Republic would've missed the CIS sending an excursion to chart hyperspace routes in the heart of their territory after all). If anyone in the Republic Navy were also aware of the routes they would have been guarded or had listening posts like the established paths. Or if they were too numerous or otherwise impossible to guard for some reason, the Home Fleet would've likely been put on a much higher standard of readiness, kept up higher numbers, and would have plans prepared for an attack from those approaches.

The republic would have collapsed sooner or later with or without Sith interference. It was too bloated unfair corrupt and exploitative. Remember, Dooku planned to murder Palps and set up his own version of an ideal government. There were other powerful Jedi like him who were not happy with the state of affairs, as well as several very powerful system and planetary governments including Mon Cala, Sluis Van, Mustafar, Geonosis and Mygeeto. then there were the Mandalorians and Hutt Cartels, who could most likely be persuaded to fight against a republic that is willing to prevent secession, and you have a recepie for disaster. Palpatine in the long run might have actually saced the galaxy from some chos and anarchy, even with the era of the Imperial Warlords.

Lucrehulk only has a chance if It has escort that can slow the Resurgent long enough to launch most of its fighters and bombers. Otherwise, the Resurgent easily breaches the shields and takes out the ship before most of its forces can be mobilized.

The lucrehulk's only advantage would be air superiority as they carried thousands of fighters and hundreds of bombers. But the resurgent's would rip the lucrehulk apart with its hundreds of turbolasers. The lucrehulk's only chance would be to launch all of its fighters and poke the Resurgent to death but it still has its hundreds of Laser cannons (Point Defense)

It depends on how long each side has to prepare. If the Resurgent is attacking (so it has prior knowledge of the Lucrehulk) and the Lucrehulk has fair warning of the Resurgent's approach, it could maybe even use its fighters to block both the turbolaser fire from the Resurgent and its measly two wings of starfighters, while the bombers get on with destroying it. Vulture droids can act very well as cannon fodder, because they don't care about their own survival. However, if the two just run into each other, the Resurgent is definitely going to win. That vulnerable bridge and scramble time for the starfighters mean that the Resurgent can get the big punches in before the Lucrehulk has even got on the gloves.

The earliest mention of gravity well generator I found in Timothy Zahn book, 5 or so years before CW Thrawn captured it from space nomad-slavers in battle, then used it in Battle of Outbound Flight.

Legends REALLY made this inconsistent, ever since KOTOR pushed it back to thousands of years ago. Earlier sources said it was brand new tech after Yavin. in Disney Canon, it's a surprise to Hera in Rebels, but already used by Tarkin in his novel years earlier.

Igor Shmakov its also used in a special way by the hapes consortium, they have interdictor mines as weapons to stop ships jumping. its unknown how long they habe that technology but since they are isolated they either had it from the begining or invented it themself.

I love the new intro. The color coding of the ships was a great idea. If I didn’t already know the profiles of most of the ships and which side they belonged to, then the colors would be really helpful. It helps newer fans or people who don’t know the franchise that is being covered. I guess it would also help in some of the battles that occurred during the New Republic in Legends when both sides were using Star Destroyers.

Great video, eck! The new colored ship icons are nice, though the blue one's outline was a little thin I find and it made the blue look a little droopy in my opinion. My suggestion would be a thicker outline! That's all the feedback I have about that. Thanks for the wonderful video!

Really glad to see a more logical explanation for this battle, among all of them that you've covered thus Coruscant has really been the only one that I didn't have a concrete understanding of going in. Your intro is pretty kickass having a nice blend of the different universes you cover, and the inclusion of distinct colours is certainly helpful. While I could follow along just fine previously at least once I lost track of a particular ship/ship group in their shuffling around the battle space, being only partially awake is the main reason it happened but I still appreciate the change. You're doing an awesome job man, keep at it! Also Infinity is an Okay name for a ship but I 100% would prefer UNSC Eckhart ;)

While a good video, you forgot Operation Durge's Lance. This was Grievous's plan to be able to utilize Sidious' new hyperspace routes. The plan was to lure Republic ships to the outer room, followed by a brutal strike (similar to Thrawn's campaign three years after the Battle of Endor). This strike was to once again lure Republic ships from the core, allowing Grievous to strike Coruscant.

The colours really help with showing the size of opposing fleets. I've never had a problem distinguishing the fleets before but the colours do make it very easy.
