How The Ring is a Remake Done Right! - Talking About Tapes

Tony, Johanna, and Crystal gather around to talk about the movie that kicked off the trend of the US remaking Japanese horror films, The Ring! In this movie review/podcast they will talk about all the things that make it a good remake. It takes the basic idea from the original, reworks the plot to make it stand apart, and gives a new backstory to the films antagonist.
It sounds like just another urban legend -- a videotape filled with nightmarish images leads to a phone call foretelling the viewer's death in exactly seven days. Newspaper reporter Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts) is skeptical of the story until four teenagers all die mysteriously exactly one week after watching just such a tape. Allowing her investigative curiosity to get the better of her, Rachel tracks down the video and watches it. Now she has just seven days to unravel the mystery.

Saw this in the theater. Really glad television doesn’t have static anymore. I used to work by where they filmed the kid meets his dad scene, and where Rachel developed the film. (That whole area is boarded up now) If you see the dvd, there is an option that says, “Don’t watch!” It shows the tape, and deleted scenes. It also has a very freaky jump scare.

Heck yeah! The Ring! I love J-horror and this was an excellent remake. The girl the mom finds in the closet at the beginning was one of the best scares ever. The Grudge (2004) on the other hand was awful. I much prefer the original Ju-On: The Grudge. Also check out Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum (2018).

IMO the reason Samara says "7 days" to Naomi Watts instead of "You will die in seven days" is because she already knows that she will survive the curse. Samara's power of foresight is hinted at numrous times in the film.

After watching the movie... The DVD extras contained the video that is watched in the film. I decided to watch it... honest to god immediately after viewing that video... the actual phone rang in the house! Holy F'n Crap!

This was a pretty good film. I liked the cold color palette they used. It came out my sophomore year in high school and I remember it freaking out a lot of people. Back then being into Japanese films was a lot more niche than it is in today's new fangled times. Most people had no idea of its origins. Watching the original Japanese version surprised me how certain parts of the American version are almost shot for shot. Overall I think Verbinski doubled down on creating an even more disturbing tone than the original and I really liked it!

I love Mouse Hunt so friggin much. It's such a great movie. I tried to watch that new tom and jerry movie... turned it off after 7 minutes and turned on more MOUSE HUNT!

Ringu had a really creepy atmosphere and full of dread. The remake didn't capture that at all and added jump scares and tried to hard to make the locations more creepy but I still enjoyed the ring

Also an FYI to the Hack crew - there was a canon short film called Rings connect 1 & 2 of these remakes. And Ring Two is pretty good and has some great tense scenes but has some dumb stuff that should have been improved.

Should have mentioned how in the original Sadako's father hits her in the head to get her in the well and a loud cartoony *BONK* plays. Also at the end the mom calls her dad saying how she need him to make a favor for her son.

Awesome review World Famous Tony from HACK THE MOVIES, fun fact that you probably know, due to Rings poor box office, paramount cancelled the Friday the 13th 2017 movie. So we could have gotten another Jason film in the 2010s but nope, they wanted to play it safe.
