This is just a question about what happened before the Great Northern War, btw I enjoy your content. This isn’t exactly unknown history, but obviously the Kievan Rus was originally one entity, starting in 862. After the Mongols came in and broke up the southern provinces of said Russian state, in 1462 or 1482 Tsar Ivan III formally claimed independence from the Golden Horde as Muscovy, securing many of the eastern territories of the Old Rus. In the same century, the Lithuanians were by and large were able to push the Horde out of the western parts of the old Rus. So we have this occupational divide, Polish in the west, Muscovite in the east, holding away over what started as the same ethnicity. The Commonwealth in the 1640’s attempted to implement measures limiting the escape of serfs and peasants from noble proprietorship, leading to Khmelnitsky’s revolt. Now of course, the Cossacks on the border developed different governance systems in accordance with the frontier environment and conditions. All that said - of course there are variations of politics and artistic differences, for sure - but would it necessarily be inaccurate to see Ukrainians and Russians as ethnically similar to the point of assimilation? Most citizens of the major cities in Ukraine are primarily Russian speaking. General Syrsky for example was a born Russian. In the Ukrainian cities Russian was the dominant language (not excluding oppression, but at the same time when running a massive empire you need a single language for civil service, such as Ukraine has attempted to impose in the last 10 years). If I’m mistaken, I would be happy to correct my view on the situation, but the point that was brought up was that there is such close assimilation (probably not just a byproduct of 1800s oppression) to the point where people of the two languages could basically understand each other, and notwithstanding gradual differences in geography (I won’t go so far as to say “foreign influence”, I don’t think the evidence there is very strong) are basically ethnic siblings (metaphorically speaking). Again if I’m wrong, correct me

Now you could do the same for the minorities in Spain who have always resisted assimilation : Catalans, valencians basques, Galicians (if you follow Spanish politics a bit you will learn that galician nationalists will break their own record they achieved four years ago and may take the Galician government from the Jacobin right which in Spain descends from Franco's regime)... And read not only Madrid Spanish newspapers but regional newspapers in regional languages as well. You'll see another perspective which is not as full of lies and manipulation (they treat us as seditious criminals who are the devil incarnate in Spanish media). By the way, you just talked about great Russians and little Russians... What about the white Russians, the Belarusians! They exist and they are increasingly against Russia and even despite Lukashenka, they strive to save their language which is in danger now more than ever. The Rusyns also exist. You have done videos about the Welsh, videos about the Circassians, now about Ukrainians. Now it's high time for the nations of the Iberian peninsula. Spain doesn't exist. It's like the United Kingdom, a composite nation, centered around Castile, whose culture has been imposed on the others...

When I was in the USN my ship visited the city of Tallinn in Estonia a few years after they were free from Russia. While shopping commented on how well the girl behind the counter's English was. She said that she spoke three languages. Growing up spoke Russia at school and for work, English to enjoy Western entertainment and her Grandmother spoke Estonian at home to keep the language alive.

Its quite common in many European countries to speak 3 or more languages. Myself, I speak Dutch and English at native speaker level, and I can make myself understood in German or French with some effort. Polish people will likely speak German, and then Russian, Ukrainian, and English as well. The only countries where people have an aversion to learning foreign languages, are rural areas in Germany and France, and obviously Britain, because there they still think they own the world. And all 3 those countries are large enough that you can live your whole life without having to leave your country for work or on vacation.

@@TheSuperappelflapIt's not out of arrogance that English speaking people don't learn foreign languages, in fact at the apex of the empire British Officers and Civil servants, were much better at foreign languages and communicated directly with locals without interpreters. But they were in a colony for months or years at a time. After modern school doing only 3 language lessons a week there is little opportunity to use a foreign language on a regular basis, for a start which language? What if you don't have colleagues or neighbours from the country you were studying at school and now your spending 12 hrs a day just struggling to pay the bills?

It's extremely interesting. Especially from a Polish point of view. Most of the struggles of Ukrainians under Tzarist Russia have a direct analogue in similar struggles of Poles. There are differences. Poles were not considered "little Russians" but pathologically rebellious Slavs. However the russification, the use of conscription and sending to the far eastern wildlands as a method of imprisonment. Damn it hits hard when you remember the same things from the lessons of history of your own country 😢

what about the worst year in Russian history? Are the Poles innocent? Poles were never seen as Russians, but both Poland and Russia started agression against eacht other. It is reall y very dissimilar. Besides Cossacks were Russians that fled from the rule of the Tsar. Poles are not Russians.

@@dhti i am deeply sorry but I can only partially understand you. I have no idea what you mean by the worst year in Russian history. About the cossacks being Russians. Cossacks were a group created by people for safety and military reasons. Their connection was political and cultural, not ethnic. Even so their ethnicity would have been a mix of Ruthenians, Poles, Lithuanians, Turks and Tatars mostly. Some Muscovites could have been a part of the cossacks at some point but it's irrelevant. You could rightly argue that some cossacks chose to identify as Russians and that makes them Russian. But that's all that is supported by facts.

Cossacks already existed in Ukraine as descendants of the Peoples of Kievan Rus mergers with PLC & Tatar People & were joined by Russian runaways who then Ukrainised. Poles are Slavs and Russia claims Big Brother/Spiritual overlordship of all Slavs under a Pan-Slavism with Russia as the Master/Father of All Slavs ...in exactly the same way that the CCP claims ownership of all Chinese whether in HK, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia & even in NZ & Australia ...Just like Hitler claimed all Germans.

You included Basarabia Gubernia (Eastern Moldova) in Ukraine. But Eastern Moldova was annexed by Russia in 1812 and was a separate entity inside the Empire and had a Românian identity. It's true Basarabia had Ruthenians (Western Ukrainians) around Hotin and some Cossacks (Eastern Ukrainians) who fled Russian persecution colonised by Ottomans around Danube. Then, after 1812 was colonised with Russians, Gagauz, Ukrainians, and Germans, but you can't ignore it was overwhelming Romanian at that date and still is even after 2 waves of colonisation.

However, under Russian administration, a lot of Ukrainians (considered ”Little Russians” by the czar!) were colonized in Bessarabia, both in North (Hotin) and in south (where Ukrainians have never been before!). The transfer of these lands from Bessarabia (Moldavian SSR) to Ukrainian SSR was decided at Kremlin by Ukrainian lobby using false demografic data. A voice from Belarus: Please, do not ignore such nation as Belarus in your videos. Similar to Ukraine, there was no country called Belarus before the 20th century, but Belarus formed the core of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania for 500 years, which we see as our main historical state. Also Belarusians actively participated in the uprisings against Russia in 1794, 1830-31, 1863-64 (which are often called Polish uprisings which is a simplification). This is extremely important to help us preserve our statehood which is endangered by Russia now. Please do talk about Belarus in your videos. Thanks.

Impressive video, the first of its kind on English-language KZbin, glad you took up the burden. The first is worthy. This is not a scientific work, so I consider it pointless to correct or supplement the author in any way. True and correct video. Thank you very much from Ukraine, I love your channel.

I can't fully understand, but I understand how difficult it is for the author to say something else that falls out of "and we taught in a different way". Immediately hate, education from a part of the audience that is ignorant. My sincere thanks to you for this, because it is easier to sit in warm water, to retell a story written in the Soviet Union, which is considered "generally accepted", but you do not follow the herd, and try to subtly introduce the true story, a reason to admire.

While I appreciate the video, there is so much wrong, especially in the education area. Parts of Ukraine that were formerly part of Poland had a monastic education system. Kyiv-Mohyla Academy has its origins in late 16th century. The "Russian" university (As well as other Universities in Russia) was founded in the mod 19th century. Kyiv (and other) cities were choses not for "Indoctrinatory" reasons, but because those places already had large amounts of highly educated individuals. Kyiv in particular has a higher literacy rate than Moscow right until standardized education of the Soviet Union. Graduates of Kyiv-Mohyla academy were highly sought after in the management of the Russian Empire. It's somewhat comparable with Cambridge and the British Empire. It was never that "Indoctrination Backfired", but the entire academic population was full of "Ukrainians" learning and teaching by a Ukrainian system. Kostomarov also taught in St. Petesberg, a city build and governed by Kyiv-Mohyla academy graduates. His views were popular there also.
