I did my summer project with Hindustan Motors in Calcutta way back in 1994 when was studying in a business school..those days Tata was coming with the Sumo and Mahindras were coming up with the Armada..the feeling at HM was why invest in new product development when there existing products were selling well ..they were just sleeping when their loyal dealers were leaving.. Look where HM is today

Great podcast loved it. When i was 8 years old a rich family in my neighborhood bought a scorpio i am from a middle class family we were planning to buy a motorcycle at that time but when I saw the scorpio it became my dream car scorpio was a dream car for an average indian family at that time it had something special in it which can not be expressed in words it's design was like nothing else.

Instead of launching cars back to back, what M&M should focus on is to train dealerships on how to behave with customers and establish a healthy long term relationship. Sorry to say but these days, most M&M showrooms are full of goons who only agree to deliver cars when you're ready buy forced accessories worth 1L or more. They just want to milk profit as much as possible for as long as they can. The sad part is that the company is aware of such tactics yet they decided to turn a blind eye and let public suffer.

Agree to this point... And you will never get mx1 variants to buy ? It's only on the pricelist and brochures to show how attractive the price range starts.

Mahindra is a great example of a company that can learn from it's mistakes and make a come back. They entered the South African market with a technically inferior product. The review I read was scathing. Today the Pik-Up is a favourite with farmers and tradesmen. Great build and great paint job and very reliable I hear. Common to find second hand versions are being sold with 300 0000 km on the clock. Other models are common on the road too. Their assembly facility here is being expanded to 14 000 sq meters. Great job.

I happened to drive a Scorpio for the first time in 2023 and I was hooked. Have had 2 BMW cars and still own a 320d, but honestly the Scorpio I feel was just made for Indian driving conditions. Circa 2024 got the Thar 3D AT petrol and…..am loving it. Superb power, superb road presence…. Brilliant! Just glued to this professional & so comprehensive podcast ❤❤👍

As someone who worked at mahindra for 10 years, I can tell you that Dr Pawan Goenka single handedly took some calls in 1990s, like building their own engine against contracting built some very good R&D pedigree. Velusamy, Mahesh Babu, Rajiv Modi, Dhabar, Gill and many. other Indian engineers were transformed into geniuses over a decade with Dr. Goenka. Which President had the balls to ask their board for Rs. 2500 Cr R&D centre called MRV in 2007? That man changed everything about Indian automobile industry without realising it.

The thing is that I don't think there is any car manufacturer that has shifted its focus from tractor to CV's successfully and Scorpio is one such testament through people's reactions and sales. Mahindra has beaten all odds and today, when I look at Scorpio N in a new avatar, I am absolutely amazed.

My close friend still has a Logan Diesel. I feel the car was way ahead of its time when it was launched. It was and still one of the most spacious sedans you could get, had a stellar k9k diesel engine. One of the few sedans where three people could sit comfortably in the rear seat, also had a humongous boot. As usual, stellar podcast, very technical discussions done. The plus point of Mahindra is they use their own engines.

The Logan is still a very fine, spacious, car and precursor to Toyota's Etios. Everytime I ride in a Logan from Uber I find the sense of space very comforting. Where Renault went wrong was to persist with an outdated design from Romania...a Western flaw in thinking that an "older design from the West would do for India". M&M could have made more of the rights to the architecture and worked on it to make it its version of Etios. The Verito was in many ways an unfinished job with inconsistent support. Both companies, individually, I think had quite a gem on their hands - barring its relative obsolescence in aesthetics, design, engine, etc. Even to this day, the space inside this car - at its price at the time - had only one competition: Toyota's Etios. And none today, really, in that segment.

@autocar_india I was eagerly waiting for you to discuss the acquisition of Pininfarina. It wasn't even mentioned nor was the TUV3OO. Pininfarina's Batista has a great battery pack and it could be of use to Mahindra. Although the TUV3OO failed, it had design inputs from Pininfarina. Since then, the quality of interiors have improved, but it still has a long way to go.

I think Mahindra will go back to making MPV because that is where the rural India and taxi for mass transportation lies. But this time all the cumulative technical expertise gathered, the more modern design team that exists now will pull it off. Go for it Mahindra.

Very interesting point. Mahindra learnt a lot from JVs. Ford, Renault, Nissan,Sanyong, Navistar. The quality change shows in their lineup .. imagine Armada,Commander and now Xuv700 and Scorpio N. Tata on the other had no JV I think ..may be learning’s from JLR. And other than Nexon and Punch and may be Curv.. they just have 2 ponies. Electric I think might not be Tatas strong point in few years as MG , BYD and Maruthi are racing fast including Mahindra. It’s a different matter of point that most batteries are made by Tata. I think Tata has lost its brut image and has the urban vehicle image. Mahindra is today and was the true Brute vehicle manufacturer. (Isuzu , Toyota are some worthy mentions)
