The Sims soundtrack is an iconic piece of video game music, and the build mode's minimalist new age jazz piano songs are undoubtedly among it's most famous tracks. We spoke to Jerry Martin, the composer of the soundtrack, to find out how and why new age jazz piano became the sound of The Sims.
Check out Jerry Martin's website to download mp3s of the build tracks, piano sheet music, and even original songs at boombamboom.com

That last sentence hit me so hard my brain hurts. _" In the nearly 2 decades since the Sims released, millions of fans have gone on to have their own careers, and families, and homes. And they doubtless had many songs to go with them. _*_But the first time their lives had a soundtrack, it was new age piano jazz._*_ "_

In the early days of the internet, it was ridiculously easy to have an email conversation with someone you wanted to talk to, compared to how it is now. I remember having a conversation with the lead writer for Knights of the Old Republic (Star Wars video game) and author (his name is Drew Karpyshyn) for several Star Wars books that I was a fan of. He took time to respond to me multiple times, and responded quite quickly as well. These days, your chances of getting any kind of communication with someone like that is diminished, but still possible depending on who you're trying to talk to. The rise of the overwhelming influence of social media has kind of flooded these creative people with messages now, even many years after their initial rise in popularity.

I've actually been very surprised they haven't brought him back in the newer Sims to compose some new piano scores, I feel like so many people that grew up with the Sims have that music to partly blame. One of my biggest complaint with Sims 3 was I wasn't able to go into the game's music folder and put the Sims 1 music in.
@themadhattress5008
@themadhattress5008 5 жыл бұрын
Technically, you should be able to do that. Even if you just use the Custom Radio Station to do it, it can still be done. I'm not sure how you could get it to play while you're building homes (perhaps replacing the Sims 3 songs for building with the Sims 1 songs, but that could be very risky in and of itself). My suggestion is to make a backup of all the files and just play around with the lot of it.

@@TheScienceguy77 what? The Sims 3 was still very much about life. The Sims 4 has more of a party element but it's not the heart of the game. I don't like the Sims 4 much but they have careers, hobbies, skills, etc, just like the other ones.
@themadhattress5008
@themadhattress5008 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'd be too afraid to touch game files aside from installing custom content. At least then, I don't have to delete anything lol. And custom music is even easier than it is for Sims 2, so there's nothing to worry about as far as that goes. But damn, those game files would be severely tricky (and scary) to work with! But like I said, making a backup of all the files before doing anything to them is a safe option just in case something goes wrong.

I just got my own place my friend and believe me it isn't that fun. we pulled up the carpet and refinished floors ourselves on the cheap style. Thing is my Fiance got started when I was gone and he didn't properly line the area with plastic. Now there is wood dust everywhere. EVERYWHERE. and trust me, when the couch was being delivered and the kids bringing it in were banging up my wall and lifting improperly, I was not listening to music. I'll probably listen to music someday when I rearrange the furniture, but I have to eventually finish moving in and having an original order to things before u reorder them. There was even a couple times I played the Sims to avoid finishing and decorating my real house.

The overall aesthetic of the original Sims is far and away superior to the sequels. It has an otherworldly quality to it (as if the 1950s, 80s, and year 2000 merged) and the overall tone is darker without being depressing.

I can't quite put my finger on it either. I'm sure that was what the designers intended. Few objects and clothing look outright anachronistic, but there isn't much that indicates "this world takes place in the year 2000."

I've always gotten very strong 80s/90s sitcom vibes from the game as well, yes. The Buy Mode music is obviously inspired by 1950s shopping music, but it's the suburban Americana vibes that really make the game stand out. The plastic lawn flamingoes, the picket fences, the tacky modern furniture....some of the houses that come with the game also have a strong '80s vibe to them, if I recall correctly.
@edumeleroverdu8509
@edumeleroverdu8509 5 жыл бұрын
@@GrijzePilion I recall I heard they were going for a sitcom vibe with the game, to make it have an environement as generic as possible, probably so the playeres can inmerse themselves and create their own thing. Plus, the 'satire of suburban lifestyle' element it's very much there, wich could explain the corny 50's vibe.

thank you guys for making this piece! as a long time Sims player since the early ages of Will Wright’s era, the soundtrack in this game resonates with me because of how much it perfectly matches the atmosphere of building your very first home, or creating your first community lot when they eventually expanded the world map when the Pets expansion pack came in. the music truly does outshine any other sims series because of how nostalgic and cozy it felt like, just lounging at home for several hours playing this game. so, thank you for rekindling my childhood memories guys. appreciate it

Jerry is wonderful. We have just written to him to ask if he had any sheet music for “The Neighborhood” as we have a live pianist at our upcoming wedding and we are hoping to have the song as our recessional piece (exiting out of the ceremony). He went and had a look but unfortunately didn’t have any in his files - however he gave us his congratulations and he said he was honoured to have his music played at our wedding.

Jerry Martin made a remark on Reddit he hoped to release a "Build Mode vol. 2" soundtrack soon but that was 4 years ago so I don't know if he'll ever get around to releasing that. If he ever does I'm throwing all of it into my custom music folder and listening to it while I build more houses :D

I use the information in this video when my fancy friends start talking about their distinguished taste in music. Thanks to you I'm part of the conversation now, with sentences like: " I, too, enjoy a good minimalist new age jazz piano song. My favorite is 'buying lumber'. You should check it out."

Funnily enough, the jazz song at 2:55, "Giant Steps - John Coltrane", is featured in the Jazz radio station "JNR" in the video game GTA 4, which is anything but calm, I could still tell the song from just a few seconds of listening to it (so much for 'less structure' of the genre lol), Well I supposed it's another kind of relaxing too when you are running people over in the street and simultaneously shooting them through the window XD

I guess there's a reason why you remember the music playing during a driveby (in a video game lol). If it was just another generic song to run people over to in a virtual world, I don't suppose it would be as memorable as you stated.

ohhh, i love this video. thanks for this! nothing like a good nostalgia piece, haha. i've always loved the music from the first sims game & sims city, growing up with it was great. the sims 2 soundtrack was really awesome, too, although obviously a totally different style. i wish they'd have a few more callbacks to the older pieces in the new game to be honest.

Usually average people don't search and listen that kind of music, or dont hear it in media. Sims 1 was a game that made people listen to this genre, this is why Maxis should have kept on using Jerry's awesome compositions... Now I turn off the music in sims games after a short time, because It annoys me. -_- When I first heard The sims 1 soundtracks, I was only 8-9 years old and I liked it. Now I became a musician an I like it even more, I also understand it. My fav is Hot Date's jazz music, but I really like these Piano pieces.. I want to get the sheets and play them!

I've got MIDI-s, you can export them as sheet music in most composing software. Here you go: t-0u7v7vHPMp at WeTransfer. Glad I'm not the only one who is a pianist thanks to Sims 1 soundtrack.

I love this so much! There are so many unique genre fusions that seem to crop up in videogames and I would love to see more exploration into those! Some of my personal interests in this topic are the Spyro soundtracks and the Stronghold Crusader soundtrack.
