How the Starfinder Playtest differs from Pathfinder 2e

When I first learned that Starfinder 2e was going to use Pathfinder 2e’s system, I thought it was going to be what every thought Starfinder 1e was: Pathfinder in space. After reading the playtest, I can see that I really do like how, even though they use the same system, Starfinder 2e tries to differentiate itself from its fantasy counterpart. That being said, I am going to miss the two different AC types for kinetic and energy armor classes. But I can see why they wanted to make it one single AC system

I find the concept of a direct correlation between currency and physical items very meta and fascinating. I get that you could say "We're just eliminating one step in the item acquisition process" but I do wonder WHY they felt the need to devote mental energy to this economic model. I foresee many broke but well equipped players in the near future. Which is interesting, since one of the common levers of game pacing is the steady trickle of new equipment. Kind of turns that on it's ear, a bit. I want to see how this plays out.

I mean, in Starfinder 1e it worked just like it did in Pathfinder. You find a +2 Sword? Yeah, okay, you have a +2 sword. You didn't have the time/energy/weren't high enough level to make it before, but now you found one. Also remember, while 1 UPB=1 credit, a person stuck on a planet with 10,000 credits in their bank account still won't have the ability to build a survival kit because they don't have the physical UPBs. So, at least in my experience, it works out just like it does in normal Pathfinder games.

@@PsiPrimeProductions1 The UPB vs Credit thing just fascinates me. Will there be places where there's a limit to how many UPBs someone is carrying, to prevent the manufacture of weapons? Will players be willing to take a pay cut to receive UPBs rather than credits (especially in areas with limited access to certain types of equipment)? So many interesting ripple effects.

@@samdoorley6101 UPBs are 1 bulk per 1000, so upgrading armor to Paragon level would take 460 bulk of UPBs, meaning yes, there are some limitations! But also, remember, UPBs can be used to make anything, even first aid kits and such. So limiting UPB carying could literally cost lives as well. It's kind of like asking if Home depot should limit the sale of plumbing parts because those CAN be jury-rigged to make a weapon too.

I missed the professional trait when doing my read-through, I love that trait a lot, it makes weird advanced weapons way more accessible (at least for more the weird or exotic style weapons, rather than more powerful.)

There's a few other ones. A hammer that acts as a warhammer (but is two-handed) and is professional for the crafting skill. Some of the weapons are a bit low-balled, but that's what the playtest is for.

I didn't expect the irreverent tone of Starfinder, but it's growing on me fast. I just wish i could find images of the SF exclusive deities or at least a physical description, just their symbol not enough for me to feel connected to them.

I mean, the deities can appear as whatever they want in whatever form they want, so would it matter? Abadar usually is in gold armor, but he could show up as a Lashunta, Human, or Skittermander. Actually, no, probably not a skittermander.

The MST3K reference isn’t the ONLY reason I just subscribed…. But it didn’t hurt ;-) Great vid! Looking forward to more Starfinder 2E content.

That's nothing. Want some more MST3K content? Play an inventor in Starfinder. Have your invention be a clockwork companion. Name it either Crow T Robot or Tom Servo. Boom, you can play Mike, Joel, or Jonah.
