How the Terminator 2 music was made

This is a reworking of a video I originally uploaded in August 2018. It was by far the most popular video on my channel for the very brief period it was online. Unfortunately it got a global block from the film studio for including visual material from the film, which they're obviously entitled to do.
As a lot of work went into this video and my subscribers have quadrupled since it was last online, I was thinking of ways to remake it without any visual material from the film. I came across the idea of buying some T2 action figures and making a bunch of stills of my own. So here we are!

I thought it would be interesting to cover off the Terminator 2 score as its creation is very specific and we can play with the exact sound sources Brad Fiedel did nearly 30 years ago.

I appreciate that this is available again. In my own experience as a shoddy, self-taught composer, the easiest thing to do is add stuff until something starts to sound OK. The hardest thing to do is simplicity, because it gives you nowhere to hide. You cannot bury a mediocre musical idea in lush orchestration. Feidel's real accomplishment, IMHO, is in finding just the right sounds and then letting them speak. That's my takeaway, anyway. Good stuff!

Absolutely. Some of the things I'm most proud of have the least in them. It's a virtuous circle - get the parts right and you don't need to put lots into it. The clean writing and arranging makes it easier to mix and it sounds more together and more powerful. Every single time. And yet it's so easy to forget!

@5.45 oh my god the T1000 is here. I love finding little bits of music in games and films that just fit with the characters or levels and this was T2's thing an awesome forboding sound that was evil and you knew the bad guy was coming. Terminator Dark Fate has something similar too for the rev 9 and it is equally amazing at capturing the new terminators menacing essence.

God that was amazing. I love the film, the score and the machines that went into making it. There is so much interesting trivia about the scores for both of those films. For example, the time signature for a lot of the score in The Terminator is somewhat unpredictable and sounds very complex to the point where people have been trying to figure it out for years now. In fact, a lot of it simply came from Brad Fiedel trying to keep his machines in sync. One part of the problem was that the Prophet 10 on-board sequencer was notoriously wonky and would drift in and out of sync, which added to the final expression. That's the thing about the machines of today - they are clean, sound perfect and are almost limitless. A lot of brilliant music and visual art of the past 30-40 years have come from working within the limitations of technology, which in turn helps shape the end result into something beautiful. Brad Fiedel's score is a testament to this.

A good artist knows that limitations are his friend. And you can definitely make great stuff with today's technology - sometimes you just need the discipline to impose your own limitations. For example: I synthesize nearly everything, even though using drum samples would be easier - but pushing against that limitation gives my music a distinct quality.

I prefer having outer hard constraints rather than arbitrary, self-imposed ones. But that's just me. At the end of the day, though, whatever gets you interesting results is what counts.

Great video. This reminded me how good this soundtrack is and I totally agree with the comment about it blurring the lines between original musical score and sound effects. This made me dig out my CD of the soundtrack, which I've had for over 30 years. Thank you, thank you thank you! Was an 90's child and was 11 when I saw T2. This score is one of my biggest influences in music. The arrangement, the merger of analog and digital, T2 had it's own personality that offered deep reflection in our own capabilities of creation and destruction. Nothing seems to replicate the graininess and buzziness of those old early samplers, especially when pitched down or up. I remember going into the theater to see Terminator 1 and not knowing what it was about. It was pleasantly terrifying!

That kind of depth, craftmanship, imagination, dedication (including the actors of course) is what makes T2 such a great movie. Most people don't have the full scope of what went into making this movie. For me it's incomprehensible that once you have worked at this level, you make further sequels that are not even worthy of comparison.

Wow! This was a ton of work you did, here. I'm so glad I found this because I've always loved that "clank" (Anvil II) in the score and am glad to see you explain it. I too, when first watching and hearing this movie was so impressed with how the music used samples of metal in what I saw as a reference to the then popular music movement "industrial". I feel like this came at a time when audiences were ready for such a thing. It's interesting to see in contrast the bits of the first Terminator score you included and how synthy they were, which I'd forgotten and they now seem very dated and 80s but still very cool. Yes, T2 hit a junction of many things and became immortal. You're absolutely right. The Terminator score has some amazingly dark moments in it and I love that score, but there some bits that are very of the era, as you were saying. Particularly that bit where Sarah Conner is riding a bike to work before it all kicks off. The music there always makes me laugh!

Truly awesome documentary. T2's unique score was as essential to its success as Cameron's direction and all the pioneering effects work. Fiedel's improvisational approach to music and sound was such an important and under-acknowledged asset to the franchise. I'm glad he enjoys doing his own musicals but it's such a loss that he left film scoring.

Awesome video! I have a tidbit of interesting info from the Fidel Terminator films, he was put down on the music union contract as the only one player (well possibly with the electric violin player) so he collected the majority of the secondary market "special payments" which normally would be split up the orchestra of 90-100 musicians-- we are talking a lot of money. On huge budget films like these that make a ton of money at the box office and in the secondary market, these films made him very rich (on top of fact he was also paid the fee to score the films and received millions in performance royalties worldwide). I understand he retired early..... comfortably.

Excellent thanks. I played a fairlight several times back in the 80's at a studio in Conduit place, London. We were regular lads and we would save our money and buy a few hrs studio time every other month. And it was just to mess around and play the fairlight. Really amazing times. We were living the dream of many but it was pricey....but worth every penny. Goosebumps every visit. Hey im a recent sub...but wanna thing you for such brilliant vids. David worked on all the FCA "Do it now" ads and I was the music supervisor / composer. They managed to get a slot to meet Arnie whilst he was in the UK and David came over. So they met in person and conversed as two Arnies. 😂 There's a video of it somewhere.

The moment I heard that fairlight BRASS sample played several octaves lower than it was intended, I understood the basis of the low sound in the "galleria encounter" scene of T2, which was EXACTLY what I had been wondering about. Great video!

Discovered your channel a few days ago cause I was researching an old synthesizer. What a found it has been, excellent content and thanks for keeping it up 👍🏼 On the video, this is one of my favourite scores of all time that has a character that gives T2 a huge part of its acclaim in my opinion. After watching this video, I appreciate even more how forward-thinking Brad Fiedel was with this composing T2. Using the latest technology to create things not many tried before and sounds we had not heard prior. I was only 7 when this movie was released (my parents didn't care if I watched these things) but I can truly say the music had as big an impact on me as the pictures. Shame Fiedel didn't continue composing long after this movie.
