I needed to hear this today. I’m a 56 year old blue belt & I got smashed today in the morning class. I’m being overtaken by all the younger blokes & today felt particularly humiliating. I Started comparing myself to others which resulted in me seriously thinking about quitting after 4 years of training. After what you said I’m going to stick with it. Forget about how well others are doing & focus on myself & my own progression no matter how slow & faltering it is. Thanks James

Do that, but also compare yourself to them WHEN THEY ARE YOUR AGE, specifically the younger people. Will they still be going at 56 or will their early start mean a lot more troubles with injuries and miles on their joints and ligaments. We only have 20-40 years of optimal growth time depending on how hard we go and how much we push. I was in the gym starting my fitness journey, again, in my 40’s and the last time I was in high school. I was thinking.. man I wish I would have started younger. Then an older guy (in his 70’s or 80’s) in my gym who was hunched over and had limited mobility, struck up a conversation with me and he says… man I wish I had have started as young as you are. That blew my mind to think that someone thought I was young in my 40’s and it made me appreciate that it’s never too late to start. That guy with his limited mobility os doing better than the 100 year old person that is bedridden. Everything is relative. Keep on truckin’ 💪🏿

I'd go as far to say that they are not the top 1% because the top 1% aren't on KZbin and taking steroids. If you have to take steroids and diuretics to look a certain way then you are less than the naturals who maintain their regimens for 50% of the result and twice the effort.

I love this video. Im just an average guy that has put on a lot of work in the gym but chasing that top 1% is not possible for me. I was always looking to be more strict in my calories, in my training, in my sleep schedule but it wasnt enough. These fitness influencers has changed the body image and would make us average naturals who worked hard not look as impressive. What I mean is back then in the 1880s people would think Eugen Sandow was massive but because of PEDs he would now look just ok.

I cannot even BEGIN to put into words how glad I am to have watched this. I'm a musician and a lot of this bleeds over into "music influencers" not necessarily genetics, but other factors that essentially just give them a leg up (don't hate the player hate the game). Knowing I should compare myself to where I was 6 months ago and THAT'S IT tells me I'm improving and I'm moving in the right direction. Thanks James for this.
@peterparker-zy9oe Жыл бұрын
i wonder what are these "factors" you speak of. I always thought music was about just practicing and getting better.
@aaaa-xf3hx Жыл бұрын
@@peterparker-zy9oemost popular musicians are widely considered cool or trendy/stylish for lack of better words. Similar to the influencer question; do you think something about musical talent makes you charismatic, unique, and stylish, or do you think these things are a factor taken into account by labels and venues before signing/booking people for shows? Look I’m not a musician but I’m sure you can make a living on talent alone but the top 1% need ‘that it factor’ people always talk about and that really is something you have or you don’t, you can’t just decide to become cool as a grown man
@G3-7162 Жыл бұрын
So like. Kinda. Depends on the instrument. Singers are kinda fucked. You can always improve your voice, but if you don't got a good voice, you won't ever be the best. So it goes. Idrk a lot about strings or perc, but what I can say is that there is a different level of natural rhythm that some people get lucky, some people get fucked. I'm pretty lucky in that area. Again, practice can get you to fantastic, but it's gonna be virtually impossible for some people to feel the stupid polyrhythms n shit for jazz. Similarly, everybody has a different ear. I can work on my ear, and tuning, intervals, and chords for thousands of hours, but I'll never be able to compete with the lady with perfect pitch I marched with. It simply won't happen, and because of that, I won't be able to slot notes quite as easily as her. Then, in brass and woodwinds, it's actually physiological. Idk if the other things are, or not, but this one is. Everybody's mouths/lips are made differently. Most of brass is embouchure, and people with lips differently will be better at different things. Same goes for lung capacity, oral shape, etc. Moral of the story, anybody can be a great musician, but not everybody can progress as fast as others, and not everybody can perform on the same level as some, regardless of practice

@@peterparker-zy9oemost “effortless” musicians are the children of musicians and had exposure to tuition, inspiration, support and materials at an age so young that they have no concept of how much of an advantage that is. 1000 hours of practice are not always equal.

Apparently the cardiologists said ive got low cholesterol just the wrong type that blocks the arteries. Bad genetics he said. Point is... what if i hadnt trained ? Would i have died ? I have no special advice to anyone out there, exercise however you want, but look after your health first.

And this is where it's so helpful to have real life friends who also want healthy bodies. I have men and women in my life who push themselves to workout when they would rather veg on the couch. Who are disciplined with what they eat, without going overboard - they have healthy relationships with food. When someone is right in front of you, you can see how great they look, with their flaws. We keep each other accountable, share tips, encourage each other. Reason no 472 why having real friends is a great way to live.
