Rasheed Wallace, Bonzi Wells and the Portland Trail Blazers were 12 minutes away from beating Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal and the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2001 playoffs and possibly rewriting NBA history as we know it. Go inside the dramatic Game 7 finish that likely kept the Lakers dynasty together.

Sheed always had a really high basketball IQ. I can see why now, he's a student of the game. As a Portlander and Blazers fan, that game in 2000 stung the most out of any Blazers game I've watched including losing in the NBA Finals in 1990. Blazers win that game like 90% of the time, it just went the other way that 10%, too bad it's only played once.

Its ok because Sheed still got the win 🏆 over the Lakers in 04’ really as a Trail Blazer playing for the Pistons. I really celebrated that as a lifelong Blazer. Wish Bonz could have got one.

I remember watching this series. I was 13 and went to a friend's house to watch game 7. We were all cheers when we were up, planning on going downtown when the championship parade came, because we all figured the Pacers would have been creamed by the Blazers. By the time the game was over it was crickets. We all had that same stare on our faces. I walked home and just went to bed. I remember being heart broken. I know people, grown people, who had to stop watching basketball after that series because they were so heart broken that it effected them watching it afterwards. It was a good life lesson. Nothing is a for sure thing until the clock is out.

I watched that game 7 with a Laker fan from Inglewood. He was depressed that first half. When Sabonis got that third foul early in the third quarter, I told him the Lakers were gonna win the game. He didn't believe me. When they won, he couldn't believe it. But, he did say, and I told him, David Stern gave LA that game. Especially, after Shaq made that colossal dunk and ran over Steve Smith... and Smith got called for the charge.

@QuestionEverything562
@QuestionEverything562 Жыл бұрын
It wasn't coaching. I mean, what coaches could even keep that team working together as well as Dunleavy did? Maybe Rick Adelman and Phil Jackson at that time, but that's about it. Pops would have been wrecked, and they would have had a mutiny against Larry Brown. The Blazers really just lacked a superstar to close out games. Sheed and Pip were never closers. Sheed more the guy to hit a big dagger three off of another player making the play for him, than creating one himself.

The 90$ Bulls impacted basketball history and how we look at individuals. Phil is not in LA - there is most likely no Shaq and Kobe championships - do either win if not for Phil and who would've stayed in LA? Pip was a huge catalyst on the Jailblazers, if you watch what Pip did in that series - he did samething he did in Chicago just needed somebody to make a few buckets. Pip slowed Kobe down enough to win that series. If the Jailblazers win that series, history looks at him differently.Whst would've happened Bulls vs Spurs in finals, do Jailblazers or Webber Kings win multiple championships and run the west? If Blazers win there is no Detroit for Sheed, all the teams that didn't win because of Kobe and Shaq after Bulls retire probably get chips.
@evilpog1693
@evilpog1693 Жыл бұрын
It would have been really difficult for an older team like Chicago Bulls to stay healthy when you had their three best players (Jordan, Pip and Rodman) in their mid 30s during that short 50 game season. Plus Jerry Krause made it pretty clear at the beginning of 97-98 season that it was Phil Jackson’s final year as head coach. Plus Pip wanted more money that’s why he signed a big contract with Houston for 1999. It would have been really challenging for the Chicago to repeat when it was pretty common to play 3 games 3 days in a row or play 4 games in 5 days back in 1999. San Antonio would have given the Bulls some problems with Duncan and Robinson. In 2000, the Lakers would have traded Kobe before they would’ve let Shaq leave. Shaq got his only regular season MVP back in 2000. The Blazers losing that Game 7 back in 2000 really affected the team negatively. The following year the Blazers barely made the playoffs and they got swept by the Lakers in the first round.

See i don't hear people talk about how Pippen had a stacked teams after Jordan and couldn't win without Mike. Jordan never had a good team around him without Pippen and Jordan still was taking bad teams to playoffs. If Mike would of joined a team in 2001 like the T'Wolves, Sonics or Magic Jordan would of had a huge chance at a 7th ring. Imagine Jordan with KG in that 2001 T'Wolves. That team needed a scorer who can take over and finish.

Sheed seems like that cat that always has excuses for his own failures. Like bruh, you missed 7 straight shots, and you are going to blame it on a single timeout and an unlucky number? Nahhh, y'all just weren't ready to step on the Lakers' throats. Y'all completely choked, especially Scottie. Scottie looked scared in that 4th qtr, and didn't want anything to do with the ball. The Blazers were just force feeding Sheed, but Sheed was never That Guy. He was not a guy you just keep feeding to close out games with. That's what the Blazers lacked, an actual superstar that closes out games.

Dum dums here saying game was fixed. Did you even watched that series? Nope just relying on the ineterview, highlights and box scores. And that's why U tube should not allow dum dums in the comments sections and video posters as well. Portland V Lakera for those of course doesn't know in 99-00 season, there was an over time game the Lakers won 90-87 in Rose garden. That win gave the Lakers the seperation they needed from Portland in the standings bout 3/4 of the season Portland and Lakers was really fighting for yhe best record in the league. WcF came, Lakers won easily in game 1, got demolished in game 2 106-77, Kobe again blocked Sabonis for a 93-91 win in game 3. Game 4 went to the Lakers. Game 5, Lakera went home for an ambush. Porland never gave them a chance to have any rhythym in game 5. Game 6 kobe fought till the end lead the Lakers in scoring because Shaq wants to be non productive. And game 6, Steve Smith gave Portland that 15 point lead in the 4th. What came up next was Kobe lead comback after score was 73-58. Shaw and Horry came alive. Lakers D clamped down on Porland that lead to a score 75 all. Finally Sheed hit a Jumper to give some life to Portland. After was tied at 79 all. KOBE made 4 straight points and Shaq made an elephant dunk. Kobe and Lakers used the same grit as the Bulls did againts Indiana in game 7 of ECF in 98.

@@ositofreitas you stated the ONLY reason the lakers were a dynasty was because of the refs. I guess it had nothing to do with the players the lakers had. You know…arguably the best 1-2 combo in league history. You are aware the lakers had won 2 titles in a row before 2002? Game 6 2002? The gambling refs helped the lakers win? Cool. What were the gambling refs doing in game 2 when the kings shot 15 more free throws than the lakers? How about in game 3 when Shaq and Kobe combined for 11 fouls and the kings shot 20 more free throws than the lakers? They certainly weren’t helping the lakers in those games. The gambling cheating game rigging refs only aided the lakers? What do you think they were doing in the games when the calls heavily favored the kings?
