As someone that isnt a "hardcore fan" of any specific sci fi series - i found caprica interesting to learn more about the background lore of the series. And because you already know what will happen in the long run (Cylons go all Skynet) its not a "ooh AI robits go rogue and kill all humans boring" but actually "i want to know what trigger their behaviour and the humies to fuck up so royal".

I never got the impression that the Cylon religion started in the colonies but that they're religion evolved organically from both the colonial perspective on the one god religion and the Final Fives one god religion.

That's right, in fact the Cylons, fully aware they were brought into being by man, and aware that much of mankind refused to even acknowledge or pay homage to HIS creator, became enraged at man's arrogance. The Cylons may have concluded that they were destined to be the instruments of God's wrath.

In Caprica, the Monads (Monotheists) didn't enlist the Cylons or seek to convert them because they didn't need to. Because of Zoe Graystone's beliefs becoming part of the core of the MCP (when Graystone Industries began producing it after she fused with the U-87) the Cylons already had Monad beliefs. Sister Clarice simply became their evangelist/prophet/religious leader and thought this infused her own beliefs/views on them as well.

I have it in my head that a "Space: 1999" reboot would not have the utterly unreal act of shooting the Moon out of its orbit. It far easier to just blow it to space debris than send it hurdling through space. What then happens is a exploration of space exploration and living in space without the heavy wartime politics as seen in "the Expanse". More or less a more drawn out, most likely live action, version of the anime "Planetes". Also the series would be set in the year 2099, thus the title "Space: 2099"

Your sentiments are shared by many. Every year thousands if not more story ideas must be pitched to Hollywood or where ever, but there seems to be a cabal somewhere that simply says no. That is the reason I see the making of a show like the Expanse like a unicorn event.

It's the tyranny of bean counters that want a surefire property to get the most out of the investment. The Expanse had a big book fanbase and that wasn't even enough. It took fans to convince Bezos who was a fan and probably saw it as a way to sell more of the books as a bonus!😊

A major contributing factor to the shows that I think you may be overlooking is the real-world politics of the time. In 1978 the world was solidly in the grip of the cold war, and on the tail end of the era of detente. Glen Larson was vehemently Republican and vehemently anti-communist, and as such he utterly opposed anything he saw as the US "Letting its guard down" around the Communists. (And in fact the USSR formally complained about this obvious symbolism in the show). It begins with the colonies signing a peace treaty, and getting slaughtered by automatons of evil, which is how Soviets were often depicted back in the day. To drive this home, during the Terra arc, they come across a world in the middle of a world war, the soviet/nazi equivalents propose a peace treaty, the american analogues accept, and the bad guys immediately launch a sneak attack, which the Galactica saves them from. Apollo basically says "you can never trust commies" in his big speech (though obviously he doesn't use that word) In the RDM Galactica, the show is largely driven by 9/11, which RDM had admitted several times in interviews. The Cylon attack is portrayed as a 9/11-type thing, and the cylons are depicted as murderous fanatical monotheists, with the Colonials being mostly-secularized polytheists, which was intended to represent a more multicultural society. He did back away from this as the show went on, but it's very apparent in the first season.

Caprica is the reason I started watching BSG in the first place. Since the Pandemic, I began to watch more BSG and have been fascinated with how the society of The Twelve Colonies was meant to mirror contemporary life at the time of filming (specifically how Caprica is based on Western countries like The United States). Something very unique to the space opera genre. As a kid I was confused when BSG promos played and I would see characters dressed like people in the real world or using caliber weapons instead of lasers.

Another excellent BG theme analysis Rowan, wonderful detail. Apologies if you've already raised this in previous films, but have you ever sat down to watch Gerry Anderson's live action series from the early and mid-70's, UFO and Space 1999? Both had superb storyline ideas, characters and models, but were let-down by the occasional stupid episode, or the entire second season in Space 1999's case. UFO in particular would work very well if it was remade and re-imagined, I heard somewhere that Ronald D Moore was a fan, so that would be a very exciting combination.

I wounder how the original how the original Battle Star Galactica was going to handle the findings of earth? Because the opening of each episode had a narration saying that the survivers went on to found civilization on Earth but the show ends with them picking up the Apollo moon landings and there are hints that some explores from earth had made into deep space. As for a new space opera show. I want one where the characters are some what's larger than life that can bring a sense of excitement and fun to the show. I say this because we have plenty of ground real heroes now so I think it time to bring back a character who if they were on the stage would be said to be acting so those inthe back can feel the full force of their performance.

Michael Lewis they hadn't thought it that far in advance, honestly. It was stated repeatedly that all the humans they met up to Terra were groups that had left the colonies, or stragglers from the original migration from Kobol. Terra was a world composed of stragglers from the original migration of Kobol to earth. Had there been a 2nd season, they were gonna pare down the cast, bring back the cylons as the main antagonists, but introduce android versions of them (as they were far cheaper, same reason the RDM show went that direction), but there was no indication that they were gonna find earth any time soon, or how they'd resolve it. Odds are we would have just seen the Galactica landing on earth in the final episode, and that would have been the end of it, as unsatisfying as that is.
@purpleslog
@purpleslog 3 жыл бұрын
The sequel series Galactica 1980 covered that sort of thing. Essentially it was the second season with a time jump.
@mahatmarandy5977
@mahatmarandy5977 3 жыл бұрын
purpleslog Sorta.I'm sure some of the ideas in there were ones intended for the 2nd season - definitely the humanoid cylons, maybe the motorcycles - but Larson and Bellisario have said that the decision to find earth was simply because they needed a big hook to grab people's attention and make them watch the new show, and that was the biggest one they could think of. It was intended to be a time travel show set 5 years after the original show, and the cast was gonna be Adama, Apollo, Starbuck, and Baltar (as the evil time traveler) but Hatch and Bennedict politely said no, so it was set 30 years on. The network kaiboshed the time travel aspect after the pilot, necessitating it being essentially space daycare and random A-Team plots. Starbuck was gonna return as one of the 'ship of lights' folk, and function as a recurring advisor later on in the season (the starbuck episode was written for Apollo, but hatch wanted nothing to do with BSG at that point) So it might be better to say G-80 was intended more like Season 3, minus the original cast. Bellisario later dust d off the original concept and used it as the basis of "Quantum Leap."

I don't mind a good reboot. Battlestar's was magnificent. Although I'm sick of and have grown out of Star Trek. Talking about flogging a dead horse. Even at its best with Deep Space Nine, Babylon 5 was better. One remake I would love to see would be Space:1999 with the feel of its first season rather than the inferior 2nd. And hey! What about The Expanse? Refreshingly original, well acted and well written ( the authors of the books it is based on work with the series writers. And by gum there is SCIENCE with the fiction, without compromising the entertainment factor. Still at least one more season, and three books after that yet to be produced. Just saw a teaser for Foundation, also looks good.

It's a quibble, but when they were making the original 78 Galactica, the writers and producers were never entirely sure if the show took place in the past, present, or future, and at different times they were working on the assumptions of each. For instance, the opening narration suggests it's happening right now, in 1978, several scripts suggest it's in the past, but isolated references here and there onscreen and more overtly in the scripts suggest it's in the future around 4000 years from now. It wasn't until the final episode, "The Hand of God," that they firmly decided "the past" was not an option, but they were deliberately ambiguous as to whether the signal they got from earth was current, or "had been bouncing around space for a couple thousand yahren."

The problem with "Do a new show, made out of original material" is that...well, the Executives want to exploit their wholly-owned IPs that are just sitting on the shelf. So it's a much easier "sell" to propose a new, darker and grittier, version of Land of The Giants than it is to sell the suits on an original show about . Especially if it's a $$$-intensive show.

ah, Glad and impressed that you mentioned the Mormon influence of Orig. BSG. I grew up in SLC in the '70's when this series was released, kind of like Star Wars on TV when it originally came out. But Count Ibley was my breaking point ... He states in his episode, "As you are, we once were, as we are, you may become" ... This was right out of the LDS Doctrine of Covenants or some such thing ... I was floored ! ...and finished with BSG. ... until it came out updated and more gritty in the reboot -- Loved it's first season or two, but then it went downhill IMHO with angst and drama and an almost endless supply of rebooted cylons ... and who may or may not be a cylon. I did find amusing in the reboot the call back reference of the cylons as Toasters ! :-p

The original statement in question is “As man now is, God once was; as God now is, man may be.” It was made by Lorenzo Snow, who was the 5th president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It is generally viewed as being accepted doctrine within the Church, though is not a part of the Doctrine & Covenants (one of 4 books to be considered canon scripture within the Church, along with the Bible, Book of Mormon, and Pearl of Great Price). An interesting article to read on the Church's website about it: www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/ensign/1982/02/i-have-a-question/is-president-snows-statement-as-man-now-is-god-once-was-as-god-now-is-man-may-be-accepted-as-official-doctrine?lang=eng

there is only 1 sci-fi property that truly needs a continuation. not a reboot or a retelling but a full on continuation of its setting and that is stargate. there were a ton of planned stories that were cut because the show was channeled and the coolest among these as the planned film/arc that would see that stargate program revealed to the general public and it would deal with the general outpouring of dissent against the program and anger from a population that had be lied to for decades.

About a B5 reboot: I'd be interested, as long as it's significantly different from the original, but addressing at least some of the questions touched upon in the original series from a different PoV. Same lyrics, different beats, so to speak. Of course, I'd much prefer a relaunch for Crusade and Legends of the Rangers, following the original story arcs laid out by JMS. Also in my wish list: Dark Matter S4

Idk, I think B5 could become too political nowadays. And then, finally the Shadows would have just to edit a Video of Sheridan that he said "Trans people are bad and Shadows a bad because they are black!" and boom, you would've a galactic wide full out war. Seriously though, I'm right now pretty happy with TheExpanse for an example and too doubtfull towards Netflix & Co as that I could imagine a good "High SciFi" Series from them with something else as topic as the US daily politics.

A lot of sci-fi shows were cancelled because of being placed on the worst time on the network schedule or they were cancelled due to budgetary reasons. Sometimes the pilot never made series. Roddenberry Genesis 2 was great but CBS didn’t green light it for series. The show had a hyper loop! There was also GRs The QuestorTapes. There’s a lot of old Sci fi that never was given the chance. IMO those should be explored.

I fully agree that Hollywood etc shouldn't just be rebooting old concepts all the time - make new stuff. That said, I would love to see a new Buck Rogers series - but only if they adapted the excellent "Buck Rogers XXVC" version. For those that don't know, TSR (who published Dungeons and Dragons) created a new, gritty take on Buck Rogers, called XXVC (Twenty-Fifth Century) for a tabletop role-playing game. Alongside this, they published a series of novels set in that universe. It's a great setting - like The Expanse but 25years early. There were multiple trilogies, but Penguin only made the opening short story anthology and the first trilogy available in the UK. Sadly, XXVC isn't developed as a game anymore, and the novels are unavailable, as there is an ongoing, protracted legal battle of the ownership of Buck Rogers. Hopefully, when that's all settled, they'll be made available as ebooks. Until then, eBay is your pal. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buck_Rogers_XXVC

I agree. I think it's far more interesting to get new stories than warming up old soup. Star Trek is one of few exceptions because it manages to always feel truly fresh. Especially recent shows are very diverse both from what has come before and each other and even if they take old established characters like Picard or Pike/ Spock/ M'Benga, they somehow always manage to tell stories with them that feel new. And I also Agree with The sentiment that sometimes for different reasons a show didn't work and wasn't able to live up to its potential (like Andromeda). That being said, we are currently getting a pretty stellar string of Sci-Fi shows like Star Trek, The Orville (although Season 4 is in doubt for now), The Expanse (I am still hoping for a continuation and adaptation of the remaining novels), Raised by Wolves, Night Sky, Lost in Space (okay, that is finished), Dark, Love Death & Robits, Tales from the Loop and many more. We are truly blessed currently and even I haven't seen all of it, yet.

Something else about the original BSG. We were not long out of Vietnam at that time. Many TV shows in the late 70s-early 80s had clear heroes and bad guys. Most had a feel good happy ending. BSG, Buck Rogers, The A Team for instance. Hardly anyone got killed, outside of non-humans. I really enjoyed the gritty realism of the rebooted BSG. I would like to see a modern, gritty Buck Rogers (not Clooney!), but with the current mental state of our country, I think it would be ruined by activism. Thanks for the video!

Call me old fashioned but I really want a return to a more epic mythology-based setting from the original BSG. Nothing against the reboot, it did gritty military sci fi very well. I just miss the spirit of the 70's show.

@@wuhteva9805 Normally I enjoy the darker and grittier sci fi, but that has oversaturated everything. Star Trek Picard is a good example. Gory violence, foul language, dumb laser shootouts in cyberpunk settings, relentless pessimism and failure, etc. I enjoy The Expanse, but I can't handle another misanthropic ultra-gritty sci fi series, and I wonder if the 2020's will bring back that sense of wonder and adventure that made pulp science fiction fun in the first place.

@@robwalsh9843 To be fair, they mixed and mashed bits of the 2nd and 3rd novels into S2, and in combination with the stuff they made up for S1 that they just had to continue with ... they pretty much painted themselves into a corner. The only people who seem to lose their shit over reboots are the people who consider that their country is the only country on this planet. I have truly enjoyed the reboots of BSG and LIS. I enjoyed Caprica and was disappointed that the series was cancelled (again because of the country that thinks their opinions is the only opinion that matters). The rebooting of Space 1999 and an ending to the series with today's digital tech and with modern acting instead of the 60's,70's and 80's camp style acting would bring the show a new lease of life. Even if it was a continuation of the story 100 years in the future with descendants of the original moonbase crew. Expanded life support tech and food/water production tech from other worlds visited and shared over that time, growth of the base etc would make for a great continuation.

Rowan Coleman tells us that the colonials in the original series were nothing but noble good guys. But actually the original series gave us, among other things: a feckless colonial president, an incompetent legislature, a genocidal traitor, a corrupt politician who gorges himself while the population starves, a insurrectionist captain and crew of a civilian ship, a prison barge full of violent criminals, a murderer at large, and an insubordinate battlestar commander. Also, most of the colonials happily switch loyalties to a satanic alien who promises deliverance. Not quite as black-and-white as Rowan would have it.

I just thought of something: Glen A Larson was unabashedly militaristic. BSG was originally cringe worthy pro military. There was a speech Apollo gave once that made me sit up and pay attention to the VERY dangerous subtext of the show. It goes somewhat like that, from "Greetings from Terra": "Once we thought that the opposite of was is peace. Now we know that it's true opposite to was is slavery". So, if you are not at war, you are a slave. NOT a message I care for. With that in mind, and with the understanding that the Mormons are pacifists, I wonder on Larson's relationship with his religion, that was obviously important to him.

A new series or property: Humanity is NOT the only ones out and about, far from the most powerful (Truthfully humanity is one alien leader's bad excuse from being eradicated from the cosmos), and has no destiny to someday rule or lead the cosmos. Most alien technologies are all but "magic". Only through hard work and humility can humanity find its place in the cosmos, exploring not from massive advanced starships in cleanly pressed uniforms working hard to be and NOT BE a military, learning from other races. In time, becoming a meaningful part of the greater community and like most, never really able to reach the heights of the elder races. Think "Star Trek" but humanity is not in charge, not in the lead, or otherwise NOT the favored race in the universe.

This will never happen and would have to be completely cgi. The characters in the first and second iterations, through a malfunction in their jump/hyperspace drive, find each other in a third universe, with a third iteration of Battlestar Galactica and Cylons. And, the third iteration biological Humans are the creation of the mechanical Cylons.

The Machines made Man? Am I reading that right? Sounds like the basis of an ORIGINAL property. But if you have to go there, Then make it set in the Matrix Universe where the machines have finally cleared the skies and want to rebuild the Earth. But Earth is NOTHING like what it was or is remembered by the Humans freed from the Matrix, as opposed to those made by the machines.

I was a huge fan of the 1970s BSG and the Earth season when I was a kid. In college I converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and all these stories had extra resonance, especially the 00s reboot. Good job summing up the church's beliefs and how they're reflected in the original and the modern shows.
